Senior couple fined for threatening behavior at Scottish hotel

Sept. 1 (UPI) — A retired Scottish couple has been fined for causing chaos and terrorizing the staff of a luxury hotel earlier this year.

In February, 72-year-old Robert Fergus ran naked through the MacDonald Loch Rannoch Hotel in Highland Perthshire carrying a pair of scissors. Witnesses said he cut cables at the reception desk, smashed a window pane with a restaurant sign, and eventually was caught driving drunk at the wheel of his BMW.

Officials said his wife, Ruth, 69, also threatened to shoot hotel staff members after she drank alcoholic beverages.

Thursday, the couple was fined £4,100 (about $5,300) by Perth Sheriff Court, in addition paying for damage done to the hotel.

Robert Fergus was also banned from driving for a year.

The couple’s attorney said a bad reaction to alcohol was the reason for the behavior that evening. One of the couple also said the hotel staff put their lives in danger.

Witnesses claimed that Robert Fergus threatened to kill hotel staff and guests, while Ruth Fergus told one staff member, “‘I’m going to get a gun and shoot you’.”

People at the hotel were frightened enough to flee — running about two miles to the nearby town of Kinloch Rannoch.

After hearing about the incident in court, Sheriff Gillian Wade told Robert Fergus, “‘I don’t think I need to tell you it’s a very sorry state of affairs.”
