Aug. 4 (UPI) — A pilot was killed when his small plane crashed into the backyard of a home in Sacramento County, authorities said Thursday.
The pilot, identified as Marshall Michaelian, was the only person on board the home-built, single-engine Lancair IV-P aircraft.
Witnesses told the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office the plane was flying south at a low altitude when it struck some power lines before crashing near the home in Rio Linda, 8 miles northeast of Sacramento.
Television footage showed the plane had come to rest on its belly near a chicken coop.
Investigators were not certain whether the plane had already experienced technical difficulties, or if the crash was a result of pilot error.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.
