Dozens hurt in train crash at Barcelona station

July 28 (UPI) — More than 50 people were injured Friday when a commuter train crashed while arriving at a railway station in Barcelona, officials said.

The train did not slow as it arrived during the morning rush hour and slammed into end-of-track buffers within the Francia station, officials said.

At least 56 people were hurt, one seriously. The injured were treated at the scene and at hospitals, regional health director Antoni Comi said.

Emergency services personnel said the train driver was hospitalized for shock.

The accident occurred after the train arrived from Sant Vicenc de Calders, a southwestern Spanish suburb 37 miles away from the Francia station in Barcelona’s city center. Local media reports indicated that many of the injured were standing in the rail cars ready to exit the train when the crash occurred.

It is unclear why the train, part of the state-run Adif railway system, did not stop properly. Adif announced that an investigation has started.
