May 1 (UPI) — Nintendo’s Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the fastest-selling edition in the franchise’s history, after a record launch in the United States last week that moved nearly a half-million copies in one day.
The latest sequel in the hugely successful Mario Kart series was released Friday. Nintendo said that day alone, about 459,000 physical and digital copies of the game were sold, making it the quickest-selling Mario Kart game to date.
Deluxe is available for the new Nintendo Switch, the company’s seventh gaming console, which was released in the United States in March.
The previous record in the series was held by Mario Kart Wii, which moved about 434,000 copies in its first day of release in 2008.
The company said Friday’s sales numbers mean just about half of all Switch owners in the United States bought Deluxe on its first day of release.
The game has also been well-received so far — attaining a score of 93 from 64 reviews at Metacritic, a review aggregator for television, films, music and video games. Nintendo said it’s the best-reviewed Mario Kart game in 15 years.
“Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the fullest and most finely tuned entry the series has seen,” The Telegraph said in its review, giving the game a perfect 100 score.
“Rev your engines and get hyped for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the best Mario Kart you will ever play,” Cheat Code Central declared, also giving Deluxe a perfect score.
Despite having the numeral 8 in its title, Deluxe is actually Nintendo’s ninth Mario Kart console game. Beginning in 1992 with Super Mario Kart, the series followed with Mario Kart 64 (1996), Super Circuit (2001), Double Dash (2003), DS (2005), Wii (2008), MK7 (2011) and MK8 (2014).
