Kevin Spacey to host the 2017 Tonys

April 18 (UPI) — Kevin Spacey will host the 2017 Tony Awards.

The annual awards show announced in a press release Monday that the 57-year-old actor will host the ceremony in June. The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing will present the show at Radio City Music Hall in New York.

“I was their 2nd choice for Usual Suspects, 4th choice for American Beauty and 15th choice to host this year’s Tony Awards. I think my career is definitely going in the right direction,” Spacey joked in a statement. “Maybe I can get shortlisted to host the Oscars if everyone else turns it down.”

Spacey, who started his career as a stage actor, won a Tony Award in 1991 for Best Featured Actor in a Play for Lost in Yonkers. He has also starred in productions of The Iceman Cometh, Speed-the-Plow and Richard III.

“We are thrilled to have Kevin, who has mastered the Broadway stage, the big and small screens and the West End, host this year’s Tony Awards,” The Broadway League president Charlotte St. Martin and American Theatre Wing president Heather Hitchens said. “His spirit and passion for live theatre makes him the perfect host, and we can’t wait to see the energy he brings to Radio City on Tony night!”

“We’re excited to be working with a witty and charming host who is not only a Tony-winning actor and fan of live theatre, he’s also a president who is a true champion of the arts,” executive producers Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner added.

In addition to acting, Spacey served as artistic director of the Old Vic theater in London from 2004 to 2015. He presently plays Frank Underwood on the Netflix series House of Cards, which will return for a fifth season in May.

The 2017 Tony Awards will air June 11 on CBS. The nominees will be announced May 2 in New York.
