Small plane crashes in Portugal market lot, kills 5

April 17 (UPI) — Five people died Monday when a small plane crashed in a supermarket’s parking lot just west of the Portuguese capital of Lisbon, police said.

Killed were the Swiss pilot, three French passengers and a man whose vehicle was struck when he was loading groceries, said Miguel Cruz, the operational commander.

The Swiss-registered Piper PA-31 Navajo was en route to Marseilles, France, when its crashed shortly after takeoff from a small airport in Tires, about 12 miles from Lisbon, around noon.

Officials said they believe the plane exploded in midair amid clear skies and a light wind.

The crash site was in a residential area and near a school between Lisbon and the Cascais resort.

Four people in the Lidl supermarket suffered minor injuries.

The airfield was closed as authorities investigated the crash.
