GREENVILLE, S.C., Oct. 14 (UPI) — A hotel manager in South Carolina sprung into action to save a dog whose leash had become stuck in an elevator.
Ben Duke, general manager at The Roadway Inn, shared surveillance video that recorded the moment he managed to free the small dog as its owner allowed the elevator doors to close without realizing the dog was still outside.
“The doors closed, and I guess he didn’t realize that his dog had wandered off,” he told WXII.
Duke happened to be walking into the hallway just as the elevator doors closed and lifted the dog above his head as he quickly attempted to break it free from the leash.
“I just grabbed it, and struggled with it, then I guess adrenaline set in or something, and I snapped the leash right above my hand,” he said.
The dog’s owner, a regular at the hotel, returned upstairs in tears after the incident and offered Duke a hug as a sign of gratitude.
Duke received multitudes of praise for his quick thinking, but said he acted mostly on instinct.
“Everybody is calling me a hero, but I can’t imagine the other outcome,” he said. “I just did what you are supposed to do in this situation.”
