Nicolas Maduro awards Vladimir Putin with Hugo Chavez peace prize

CARACAS, Venezuela, Oct. 8 (UPI) — Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro awarded a peace prize in honor of Hugo Chavez to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Maduro created the “Hugo Chavez Prize for Peace and Sovereignty” to recognize world leaders who in their performance in defense of peace, according to a post on his Facebook page.

“I’ve decided to create the Hugo Chavez prize for peace and the sovereignty…I think President Vladimir Putin deserves this award,” he said during a televised broadcast.

Maduro described Putin as a “fighter for peace” as he unveiled a statue of Chavez donated by the Russian government.

“We are grateful to President Putin and the Russian people, for such an admirable gesture in the hometown of the leader of the bolivarian revolution,” he said.

Maduro also announced that Putin and all future recipients of the Hugo Chavez Prize for Peace and Sovereignty will receive miniature replicas of the statue.
