ADELAIDE, Australia, Sept. 9 (UPI) — A goat living among a mob of wild kangaroos in Australia has become the poster animal for a movement to protect the land where they live.
The goat, dubbed Gary by fans, has become a local celebrity in south Adelaide, where he somehow became accepted into a mob of kangaroos as a member of the family.
A Facebook fan page, Leave Gary the Goat Alone, was started by locals upset by government agency Renewal South Australia’s plans to turn the 42 acres the goat and his roo family call home into a housing development.
A petition seeking to stop the development had amassed nearly 7,000 signatures as of Friday.
Gary the Goat’s origins and how he ended up living with the kangaroos remain a mystery, but the Facebook page says he has been living with the marsupials “for at least a couple of years.”
