‘Muriel’s Wedding’ stage musical to have world premiere in Sydney

SYDNEY, Sept. 8 (UPI) — Global Creatures and the Sydney Theatre Company say they are teaming up to produce the world premiere of Muriel’s Wedding: The Musical.

No casting has been announced yet.

The show is based on the popular, 1994 movie Muriel’s Wedding, which was written and directed by P.J. Hogan, and starred Toni Collette and Rachel Griffiths.

The stage version is scheduled to play Nov. 6 through Dec. 30 at Sydney’s Roslyn Packer Theatre. It will be helmed by Simon Phillips.

Hogan is updating his screenplay for the adaptation, while original music for Muriel’s Wedding: The Musical is being written by Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall. Beloved songs by Benny Andersson, Bj√∂rn Ulvaeus Stig Anderson, originally written for ABBA, will also appear in the show.

“When the film of Muriel’s Wedding was released in 1994, it was an immediate global sensation. The humor, emotion and heart of Muriel Heslop’s story are the perfect ingredients for a live musical!”
Global Creatures Chief Executive Officer Carmen Pavlovic said in a statement.

“I’m thrilled that P.J. Hogan has agreed to bring his much loved story to the stage and I’m looking forward to working with the abundantly talented team of P.J., Simon, Kate and Keir. I can’t imagine a better opportunity than partnering with Australia’s leading theater company, STC, to ensure the best possible creative development and presentation of this brand-new musical. STC is an industry leader in creating new work and together our two organizations can bring significant creative resources to bear.”
