MEXICO CITY, Sept. 7 (UPI) — A police helicopter crash that killed four people in western Mexico might have been attacked by gangs, authorities said.
The helicopter went down Tuesday during an operation to round up members of criminal organizations in the western state of Michoacan, killing the pilot and three officers, Gov. Silvano Aureoles tweeted. A fourth officer was injured in the crash.
Police are investigating the cause, but the crash is the second since 2015 suspected of foul play. A military copter was shot down by the Jalisco New Generation drug cartel with a rocket launcher last year, killing eight people onboard.
Drug cartels have operated for years in Michoacan and battled security forces. Last year, 42 gunmen and police officers were killed in a shootout there.
