Chiefs’ Jamaal Charles uncertain for Week 1

Chiefs coach Andy Reid expressed doubt about the availability of running back Jamaal Charles for the team’s opener while speaking with reporters on Friday.

Charles, 29, continues to rehabilitate his knee after tearing his ACL in Week 5 last season and missing the rest of the year. He skipped the preseason and may not be ready to handle snaps right away.

“I think Jamaal is going to need a little time to keep working to get himself back,” Reid said, according to ESPN. “We’ll see how he does after a couple of days off.”

Spencer Ware has emerged as Charles’s primary backup, with Charcandrick West also potentially receiving carries. The Chiefs could continue with a committee approach even after Charles returns.

Charles averaged 5.1 yards per carry in five games last season, rushing for four touchdowns and 364 yards.
