Cheers! Oakland A's treat David Ortiz to a bottle of wine

OAKLAND, Calif. — You might say David Ortiz has aged like fine wine, and fine wine was a part of the pregame ceremony to honor the 40-year-old designated hitter Friday night.

Ortiz and the Boston Red Sox opened a three-game series at the Oakland Coliseum. Before the game, the A’s paid tribute to him with a video.

Then A’s president Michael Crowley and manager Bob Melvin presented Big Papi a large bottle of cabernet. The DH is set to retire at the end of the season.

The Coliseum is one of the few ballparks in the majors in which Ortiz has not thrived: He came into Friday as a career .219 hitter (49-for-224) in Oakland.

Sure enough, in his first at-bat, he ripped an RBI single to right-center.
