Officer replaces girl’s stolen bike

A Petal police officer went above and beyond the call of duty just to make a little girl smile.

Eight-year-old Skylynn Thurman had her bike stolen, and after several days of searching, she had almost given up hope.

When Skylnn came back from school Tuesday afternoon, she had no idea a new bike would be sitting in her driveway.

“I like it a lot,” Skylynn said.

Riding a bike is something she does everyday, and now thanks to Sgt. Wayne Bounds with the Petal Police Department, she is back in action.

“Just to see her smile made my day,” Bounds said.

After her bike got stolen, Bounds knew he could not just sit back and watch her suffer, so the police department bought her a new one.

Her mother, Michelle Thurman, said this little act of kindness meant a lot her and is something she will never forget.

“It really touched us,  it touched my daughter even though she’s young because she knows something bad can happen but something great can come out of it,” Michelle Thurman said.

Although Skylynn is shy, she thanked Sergeant Bounds in her own way by giving him a hand-written note.

Bounds said performing little acts of kindness is the best part of his job.

“We are here for the people and just seeing that little girl smile is all about policing,” Bounds said.
