‘Sweeney Todd’ to return to New York City this winter

NEW YORK, Aug. 22 (UPI) — Tooting Arts Club’s production of Stephen Sondheim‘s Sweeney Todd the Demon Barber of Fleet Street is heading to New York City, following sold-out runs in London.

No casting has been announced yet for the 19th century-set musical about a homicidal hair-cutter and the resourceful proprietor of a British bake shop.

Performances are scheduled to begin Feb. 14 at the Barrow Street Theatre, with an official opening set for March 1. The show is an adaptation by Christopher Bond, with music and lyrics from Stephen Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler.

“Directed by Bill Buckhurst with music supervisor Benjamin Cox and designed by Simon Kenny, the working pie-shop environment will be re-created at the Barrow Street Theatre,” a press release said. “Traditional pie and mash will be served prior to the performance.”

Sweeney Todd was last seen on Broadway in 2005 at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre.
