NEW YORK, Aug. 19 (UPI) — Jon Stewart appeared on Larry Wilmore’s final episode of The Nightly Show and offered his former Daily Show colleague advice on surviving the cancellation.
“Do not confuse cancellation with failure,” Stewart told Wilmore, who previously appeared on Stewart’s Daily Show as the Senior Black Correspondent.
The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore premiered on Comedy Central in January 2015 and its cancellation was announced on Monday. The show’s final episode aired Thursday.
“I’m really grateful to Comedy Central, Jon Stewart and our fans to have had this opportunity,” Wilmore said. “But I’m also saddened and surprised we won’t be covering this crazy election or “The Unblackening” as we’ve coined it. And keeping it 100, I guess I hadn’t counted on “The Unblackening” happening to my time slot as well.”
“You started a conversation that was not on television when you began,” Stewart said. “And you worked with a group of people you invited to that conversation to collaborate with you, to sharpen that conversation. And what you don’t realize is that you walk out of this room, and that conversation doesn’t end. That’s beautiful thing.”
Wilmore is also an executive producer on ABC’s hit show, black-ish. Chris Hardwick’s game show-style @Midnight will take over for The Nightly Show until a permanent replacement is found.
