IOC official arrested for ticket scalping resigns

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 18 (UPI) — The head of the European Olympic Committees resigned after being arrested by Brazilian police for alleged ticket scalping.

Patrick Hickey, 71, is believed to be part of a plot to sell about 1,000 Olympic tickets for more than face value. He resigned his position after the arrest, the Olympic Council of Ireland said Wednesday.

Police believe Hickey might have been trying to escape capture after finding him Wednesday morning in the room next to where he was booked with his wife. Despite Hickey’s credentials being with his wife, she said he’d already returned to Ireland.

Hickey joined the 98-member International Olympic Committee in 1995. He is also head of Ireland’s Olympic Committee, the European Olympic Committees group president, and vice president of the Association of National Olympic Committees.

Hickey complained of not feeling well after his arrest and will spend the night in a local hospital, said IOC director of communication Mark Adams.
