WASHINGTON, Aug. 16 (UPI) — Rapper Young Thug explained the reasoning behind his decision to change his name to “No, My Name Is Jeffery” in advance of his new project Jeffery.
In an interview with fellow rapper and producer Travi$ Scott on Apple’s Beats 1 .Wav radio show, Young Thug clarified that the name change would be a temporary condition if his record sales failed to meet his expectations.
“I’m Jeffery for one [expletive] week. If I don’t sell a 100,000 copies,” he said.
Complex reports Jeffery Cohen, CEO of Young Thug’s label 300 Entertainment, also provided some insight into the name’s meaning when he announced the change.
“The reality is, when you see this commercial, you’re all going to understand what we do here at 300,” he said. “Because it’s powerful images of what makes someone Young Thug and what the evolution and how someone is Jeffery. It’s a circular thing, it’s important. ‘No, My Name is Jeffery’ is on it’s way. Please respect us to actually segue and utilize his name going forward because it’s important.”
Cohen had also revealed Jeffery would release on Aug. 26 rather than its scheduled release date of Aug. 16 on Young Thug’s birthday.
