‘Mr. Robot’ with Rami Malek renewed for Season 3

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 16 (UPI) — Mr. Robot will return for Season 3.

USA Network renewed the thriller series for a third season Monday, just over a month after the Season 2 premiere.

“We couldn’t be more proud of Mr. Robot, a series that has pushed boundaries, captured the cultural zeitgeist and been honored as one of the best dramas on television,” NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment networks president Chris McCumber said in a press release.

“Midway through its second season, Mr. Robot continues to break new ground and open up new opportunities for the network,” he added. “We can’t wait to see where [series creator] Sam Esmail and the entire brilliant Robot team take us next.”

Mr. Robot will conclude Season 2 in September and return for a third season in 2017. The series stars Rami Malek as Elliot Alderson, a security engineer with social anxiety disorder and depression, who is recruited by the mysterious anarchist Mr. Robot (Christian Slater).

“I’m going to say [Elliot’s] very, very focused [in Season 2],” Malek recently told Interview magazine. “He’s coming to terms with this reality of having this kind of dual existence, knowing that Mr. Robot’s existence is real. That creates an entirely different focus for him.”

“I think he’s in a really guilty place when you first see him,” he added. “As much as I thought that I had this guy down and understood him and was living in his skin, I realized there was so much of him that I had yet to discover.”

Mr. Robot is nominated for six awards at the 2016 Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Malek. The series airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET.
