Vice President Joe Biden officiates same-sex wedding of White House staffers

WASHINGTON, Aug. 3 (UPI) — Vice President Biden officiated a same-sex wedding at the vice president’s residence at the U.S. Naval Observatory on Tuesday.

Biden, after receiving his temporary certificate to officiate a wedding, oversaw the wedding of White House staffers Brian Mosteller and Joe Mahshie.

Mosteller, an aide to President Barack Obama and Mahshie, a trip coordinator for first lady Michelle Obama. Only a small group of family and friends were present at the ceremony.

“Proud to marry Brian and Joe at my house,” Biden tweeted later. “Couldn’t be happier, two longtime White House staffers, two great guys.”

Biden made his support clear for same-sex marriage in 2012, before either Obama or current Democratic Party nominee Hillary Clinton.

“I am absolutely comfortable with the fact that men marrying men, women marrying women and heterosexual men marrying women are entitled to the same exact rights,” he said on Meet the Press. “All the civil rights, all the civil liberties.”
