MUMBAI, Aug. 3 (UPI) — About 22 people are missing after a busy highway bridge collapsed near Mumbai late Tuesday night, officials said.
Two buses were among the many cars that plunged into a flooded Savitri River as the colonial-era bridge collapsed.
National Disaster Response Force teams of about 80 people arrived at the scene to rescue and look for victims. Heavy rain is making the rescue more difficult.
Divers are searching for bodies and a Coast Guard helicopter is searching for survivors, though none have yet been found.
The bridge is a short distance from the beach resort of Mahad in Maharashtra’s Raigad District, south of Mumbai.
