Michelle Obama lauds Clinton as example for young girls everywhere

PHILADELPHIA, July 25 (UPI) — First Lady Michelle Obama offered an emotional address to delegates at the Democratic convention, saying she is inspired by Hillary Clinton becoming the first woman president, setting the right example for the Obamas’ own daughters.

Obama appeared to choke up toward the end of her speech, telling delegates — and millions watching across the country in prime time — Donald Trump‘s slogan “make America great again” was wrong.

“I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves and I watch my daughters — two beautiful, intelligent young black women — playing with their dog on the White House lawn,” Obama said. “Because of Hillary Clinton, my daughters, our daughters, now take for granted a woman can be president of the United States.”

She then addressed Trump, albeit not by name.

“Don’t let anyone ever tell you that this country isn’t great, that somehow we have to make it great again. Because this is the greatest country on Earth.”

Obama lauded Clinton for rising above her own hurt feelings after losing the Democratic nomination eight years ago and putting public service ahead of personal sacrifice.

“When she didn’t win the nomination eight years ago she didn’t get angry of disillusioned. Hillary did not pack up and go home because as a true public servant she knows this is so much bigger than her own desires and disappointments. She proudly stepped up to serve our country as secretary of state,” Obama said.
