LOS ANGELES, July 14 (UPI) — Mo’Nique says her open marriage is a relationship built on honesty.
The 48-year-old actress and husband Sidney Hicks frankly discussed their arrangement on Tuesday’s episode of The Preachers. The couple celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary in May.
“When we first came out with it, everybody said, ‘Oh my God, how could Mo’Nique let that man do that to her?'” Mo’Nique recalled. “[But] it was my idea.”
“[Sidney] is my best friend ever. What I did not want to do is be dishonest with my best friend [because] there may be times I want to be with other men,” she explained. “I wanted to be open and honest with the person I was going to spend the rest of my life with.”
Hicks shared similar sentiments, saying they make the arrangement work with honest communication. The couple have been friends since high school and share 10-year-old twin sons, Jonathan and David.
“Yes, we are in an open relationship,” Hicks said. “By that, we mean that we’re always open to conversation. We’re open to the understandings that man and woman, or as a couple, we should have for one another.”
Mo’Nique first revealed she and Hicks have an open relationship in a 2006 interview with Essence. The couple are open about their status and even have a podcast, Mo’Nique Sidney’s Open Relationship, dedicated to the topic.
“It’s not just an open relationship from a sexual standpoint, it’s an open relationship in terms of dialogue that you’re having with your spouse,” Mo’Nique said on the show in January.
Mo’Nique was previously wed to Mark Jackson from 1997 to 2001. The actress is known for playing Nikki on The Parkers and has since starred in Precious and the HBO biopic Bessie.
