DEVELOPING: An Alabama sheriff’s deputy was shot while responding to a hostage situation Saturday, the latest casualty of a week of violence against law enforcement officers.
The Randolph County deputy was taken to UAB Hospital in Birmingham. The deputy’s condition was not immediately known.
The City of Heflin Police Department said a suspect is barricaded inside a building with at least one hostage. WBRC, citing the Randolph County sheriff’s office, reported that a man is inside a trailer with his wife. It was not immediately clear whether the wife was being held against her will.
WBRC also reported that the suspect killed his son’s dog and started a fire at another location in Randolph County.
Heflin police posted a message on Facebook Saturday afternoon.
Local media reported that SWAT officers were on scene, as are military-style vehicles and emergency services.
