NEW YORK, July 4 (UPI) — Donald Trump on Saturday tweeted an image of Hillary Clinton‘s face, over piles of cash next to the Star of David, prompting heavy criticism and charges of anti-semitism. The image was deleted a short time later.
The image read: “Crooked Hillary – – Makes History!” above a photoshopped image of Clinton and her “History made” slogan. That image is laid over a background of hundred dollar bills and a six-pointed star with the caption “Most Corrupt Candidate Ever!”
At the bottom of the image is cut out of a Fox News poll results asking voters whether they found presumptive Democratic nominee “honest/trustworthy” or “corrupt.
About four hours after the original tweet, Trump replaced the image featuring a six-pointed star by an image with a circle and the same caption. But a steady stream of criticism — starting with social media came from both sides of the aisle.
It was the latest blunder by Trump that plays into the image that the New York real estate mogul is a racist.
Patrick Ruffini, of the conservative-leaning Echelon date company, denounced it as an “anti-Semitic dog whistling tweet.”
Marc Lamont Hill, professor of African American studies at Morehouse College, declared it “textbook anti-Semitic imagery.”
Included in the updated image was one of Trump’s slogans, “America First.” The Anti-Defamation League has asked Trump to stop using the phrase, due to it being the same slogan used by many Americans, some Nazi-sympathizers, in the 1930s who wanted to keep the U.S. out of World War II.
The Clinton campaign has not officially responded to the image.
