Wales advances to Euro 2016 quarterfinals on McAuley own goal

Wales is onto the Euro 2016 quarterfinals after edging Northern Ireland 1-0 in Paris on an own goal by Gareth McAuley.

The Northern Ireland defender was trying to cut out a ferocious cross from the left from Gareth Bale, and he inadvertently hit the ball into his own net with his sliding effort.

It was one moment in a match devoid of chances, with both teams struggling to take the initiative and create. Wales thought it had a goal in the opening half, but Aaron Ramsey was offside when touching home Sam Vokes’s¬†looping header, which may have gone in on its own.¬†

Northern Ireland goalkeeper Michael McGovern did his part, keeping out a dangerous Bale free kick in the second half with a diving save, but he couldn’t do anything about the own goal in the 75th minute.

Wales will play either Belgium or Hungary in the quarterfinals.
