Three people have been killed in a shooting spree at Israel’s largest indoor market, in Tel Aviv, officials say.

Police told the BBC that two attackers were in custody, and a third is thought to be on the run.

The attack took place at the popular Sarona Market, which houses a number of shops, bars and restaurants.

Five people are in a serious condition and three have been moderately wounded, Zaka emergency service said.

The attack took place at around 21:30 (18:30 GMT) in an area which is close to Israel’s defence ministry and main army headquarters.

Video footage showed crowds of people running from the scene and ambulances arriving. Pictures showed upturned tables and chairs at one restaurant.

It is not clear who carried out the attack. However, there has been a rise in Palestinian attacks on Israelis since last year, with a series of shootings, stabbings and car rammings, the BBC’s Middle East correspondent Yolande Knell reports.

The number of incidents has dropped in recent months, she notes.
