McIlroy recovers well at Memorial

World number three McIlroy won his first title of the year at the Irish Open less than two weeks ago

Rory McIlroy shot a six-under-par 66 to recover from a disappointing opening round at the Memorial Tournament.

The Northern Irishman hit eight birdies as he moved up 46 places to tie for 12th after the second round in Ohio.

Americans Brendan Steele and Matt Kuchar were tied for first as overnight leader Dustin Johnson slipped back to joint fifth with a one-under-par 71.

Luke Donald hit 73, leaving the Englishman tied for 42nd place with two rounds at Muirfield Village remaining.

Australian world number one Jason Day followed his opening 66 with an erratic 71 to drop five strokes off the pace.

While American world number two Jordan Spieth rose to joint 22nd with a four-under-par score of 68.
