Vardy to miss England game for wedding

Jamie Vardy

Jamie Vardy has now scored in the last three England internationals.

Leicester striker Jamie Vardy will miss England’s friendly against Australia on Friday – because he is getting married on Wednesday.

Vardy, 29, cancelled his wedding last year and has also already moved it from June so he can play in Euro 2016.

Manager Roy Hodgson said: “Last year his wedding was planned during the month of June and I called him up for the international matches.

“I think he deserves that possibility to get married here.”

Vardy – who scored 24 Premier League goals as Leicester won the title – started Sunday’s 2-1 win over Turkey on the left of a front three but later moved into the centre and scored the winner.

Tottenham striker Harry Kane is Hodgson’s preferred choice through the centre, with Hodgson saying he expects all of his forwards to be comfortable in both a 4-3-3 or a 4-4-2 diamond formation.

Hodgson said: “Jamie Vardy was playing for Fleetwood Town a few years ago.

“I am sure that if you said to him that you are going to play for England he’d have been happy to play centre-half or even goalkeeper.

“I don’t intend at the moment to play a system which suits Jamie Vardy and Vardy alone.

“But I don’t think his place in the team or the squad at the moment is under enormous threat.”

Players from Manchester United and Liverpool who missed the win over Turkey will join up with England on Monday as Hodgson prepares to cut his preliminary squad of 26 by three before the 31 May deadline.

United’s 18-year-old striker Marcus Rashford impressed in the FA Cup win against Crystal Palace on Saturday but picked up a knee complaint that needs assessing.

“You might want to ask me about Rashford’s fitness and I’ll have to answer that I don’t know,” Hodgson said.

“We believe it is not a serious injury but he obviously took a nasty knock and we’ll have to wait and see how he turns up.”
