Massachusetts officer shot, condition unknown; suspect loose

A police officer was shot in a central Massachusetts town overnight Sunday and the shooter is on the loose, local media reports.

Massachusetts State Police said the Auburn police officer was shot at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday. Auburn is about 45 miles southwest of Boston.

The officer was rushed to UMass Medical Center in Worcester, WGGB/WSHM-TV reported.

The identity and medical condition of the officer were not immediately available.

Investigators believe the officer was driving in a cruiser and collecting ballistic evidence when the shooting took place, WMUR-TV reported.

The shooter fled the scene in a vehicle and police were looking for him, the station reported.

Auburn Police are assisting State Police in the investigation.
