LeBron James’ childhood friend and now business partner hints that LeBron’s lifetime Nike contract is worth $1 billion in a new interview with GQ.
Maverick Carter manages all of LeBron’s business. So, he is one of the few people who knows the secrets behind stuff like how much Nike gave LeBron to stay with them for a lifetime. While he won’t dish details, he sure will imply.
GQ: How much was the deal for?
Carter: I can’t say.
GQ: Come on, Mav! Can you ballpark it?
Carter: What are people saying?
GQ: Kanye said a billion. So a billion.
[Maverick smiles and points one finger skyward.]
GQ: Holy [expletive].
Carter: Yeah. It’s a fantastic deal. Nike feels great about the deal. That’s the most important thing. As great as I feel, as great as LeBron feels—Nike feels fantastic about it. It’s the largest deal in the history of the company. Their hope is he makes even more. And our hope is that, too, obviously.
While Maverick can’t say for sure, Kanye West mentioned in his song “Jumpman” that the deal is worth $1 billion. It looks like Kanye was right.
A billion is on the high end of previous estimates, which ballparked 500 million to 1 billion.
