Patriots TE Gronkowski Wins Madden 17 Cover Vote

Rob Gronkowski

New England Patriots All-Pro tight end Rob Gronkowski is your Madden NFL 17 cover athlete, as announced by ESPN on SportsCenter on Thursday evening.

After EA Sports ditched the idea of a fan vote, “Gronk” beat out Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, who was the other finalist along with Gronkowski for the cover. Here is a first look at the game that is set to be released sometime in late August via a teaser trailer from EA Sports.

Rob Gronkowski becomes the first tight end to ever be featured on the cover of any of the Madden NFL video games, and he also becomes the first Patriots player to be featured on the franchise’s cover. Before Gronkowski, the only positions to be featured on the Madden cover were running back (Barry Sanders-most recent), quarterback (Drew Brees), wide receiver (Odell Beckham Jr), linebacker (Ray Lewis) and safety (Troy Polamalu), as well as John Madden.

After being voted as the new Madden cover athlete, Gronkowski appeared on Sportscenter where he thanked the fans, his teammates, the New England Patriots organization, the people at EA Sports, and everyone else who has helped allow him to be the next face of Madden. Gronkowski also answered a series of questions from SportsCenter host, Lindsay Czarniak during his appearance on the show. One of the questions Gronk was asked was “what is your biggest fear?” Gronkowski’s answer?

“Losing it all. Losing everything I’ve worked so hard to achieve and be in the position that I am in. That is definitely my biggest fear.”

 *Are you listening, Johnny Manziel?*

Gronkowski, who is no stranger to devastating/season-ending injuries, also said that he is not too worried about the Madden Curse. For those unfamiliar, Madden cover athletes have notoriously suffered horrendous injuries or had bad/unproductive seasons the year that they were put on the cover.

“It’s definitely reversed itself from back in the day. You have to look at the players that were on it recently. You have Odell, who had an unbelievable year last year. You have Richard Sherman, who went to the Pro Bowl the year he was on it. Calvin Johnson, who broke the receiving record when he was on the cover. It’s the present now. It’s the future of the cover. I feel like I’ve already went through all my injuries at that time, so I feel like I’m good. I’m blessed right now to be on it. I feel like everything is going to go smoothly.”

Even if you are one of those people who hates the New England Patriots, it’s hard to hate Rob Gronkowski. He’s a friendly guy who loves to have a good time and give back to the community, all while having fun in the process. As Gronkowski stated after receiving the honor as the next Madden cover man, “today is a good day.” Good for him.
