The actor who played Gregory Goyle in the Harry Potter movies is now an MMA fighter in Europe.
Josh Herdman made his MMA debut last weekend in London, England at the Rise of Champions show. He beat Poland’s Janusz Walachowski after three rounds.
I don’t see it so much as a career change,” Herdman says of fighting career. “I still act and am passionate about both acting and fighting.” “I haven’t fallen out of love with it, I still have an agent and still go for auditions. It’s just a little bit like playing the lottery for a living.”
Herdman did his last Potter movie in 2011. He’s been training for fighting since then.
“I’ve been training traditional Japanese jujitsu for nearly five years and hold a shodan black belt,” Herdman explained. “It’s raw, exciting and unpredictable. I find it more interesting than boxing although I appreciate the beauty and art in boxing. It also made sense to move onto MMA because of my jujitsu training.”
If you don’t remember, Goyle was bad guy Draco Malfoy‘s go-to guy for protection after he made a mess of a situation, sort of like his bodyguard. He was in all of the movies.
Herdman’s father, Martin Herdman, was a professional rugby player and a boxer before pursing an acting career of his own. Herdman’s Harry Potter dad was a Death Eater so Josh is pretty well prepared for both fighting and acting. “He taught us all how to fight from an early age,” Herdman recalled of his father. “I also played rugby from about 6 to 13.”
