Rescuers search for missing man who was swept out to sea in Southern California

The U.S. Coast Guard searched the waters off a Southern California beach Tuesday after a swimmer was reported missing after being swept out to sea.

Crew members planned to continue to the search Wednesday morning, the Los Angeles Times reported. The man was in the ocean near Manhattan Beach and was reported missing at about 5 p.m., Coast Guard petty officer Andrea Anderson said.

Friends and family members identified the man as 25-year-old D.J. Jeffries, of Hawthorne, KCBS-TV reported. Jeffries was with friends in the water when they lost sight of him when he was about 50 yards into the water, Los Angeles County Fire Department lifeguard specialist Lidia Barillas told KTLA-TV.

Jeffries did know how to swim, according to the LA Times.

Helicopter crews, divers and lifeguards quickly scoured the area. Lifeguards from Redondo Beach and crews from the Los Angeles County Fire Department assisted in the search.

At least one Coast Guard ship will help when the search resumes at sunrise Wednesday.
