This week’s episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. showed more shades of gray to both Lincoln and Malick. We learned that within every good man is a dark side, and within every bad man, there is a mistake that he regrets. Both revelations altered what we have come to know about these two characters.
Lincoln seemed like the pillar of calmness and serenity. Now we have discovered that Lash’s reasons for wanting him dead had some legitimacy to it. Malick, on the other hand, showed us that his blind devotion to Hive may have been a mirage all along.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. opens with a flashback to teen Gideon Malick. Gideon and his brother Nathaniel’s father just died, and they start talking about the Hydra legacy. Nathaniel thinks they should consider Whitehall’s version of Hydra, but Gideon insists that they stay true to their roots and beliefs.
Later, the boys go visit Whitehall, and he reveals that their father didn’t completely have faith in Hive. He tells them to check a copy of “Paradise Lost” in their father’s study. Gideon dismisses Whitehall’s claims, but Nathaniel checks it.
He finds an altered stone. Their father used to place that stone in the bag to ensure that he never got sent as a sacrifice to Hive. Gideon and Nathaniel agree to toss the stone away and leave things to chance.
On the night they were picking stones for the sacrifice, Gideon lies. He kept the stone and picks it. Meanwhile, Nathaniel draws the short end of the stick and gets sacrificed to Hive.
In the present, Gideon tells Stephanie that he saw his own death when Charles touched him. Hive kills him. Being a true believer, Stephanie cannot believe that Hive would kill her father, not after years of loyalty and devotion.
Hive gathers a bunch of Hydra’s leaders to reveal his true self. At this meeting, Gideon expects to die to be made an example of, but Hive spares Gideon. Later, Hive(using Nathaniel’s memories) makes Gideon confess to Stephanie his lack of faith.
Stephanie is shocked to learn the truth about her dad. Hive then mentions needing a Malick by his side. Gideon expects Hive to kill him and rule besides Stephanie. But Hive kisses her and sucks her life out.
He shows Malick true sacrifice.
The S.H.I.E.L.D. Crew tries to figure out what to do with their new information on Ward Hive. Lincoln admits that he knew a guy at Afterlife who knows about Hive. Coulson sends Daisy and him to investigate the guy.
While they’re gone, the rest of S.H.I.E.L.D. plans to investigate what Malick wants with Transia.
Lincoln and Daisy end up off the grid in South Dakota, where James resides. He hates Lincoln because of Jiaying, and a general belief that Lincoln doesn’t deserve his powers. After using their powers to escape a series of land mines, the duo gets information from James with the false promise of giving him Terrigen crystals to complete his transformation.
He shows them a Kree artifact that may be able to help them with Hive. They quickly steal it from James without giving him the Terrigen crystals. Out of anger, he shouts about Lincoln nearly killing his last girlfriend.
Once Lincoln and Daisy safely return to a S.H.I.E.L.D. ship, she questions him about what James said. Lincoln tells her about his drinking problems and anger. One day, he got so drunk and angry that he got into a car accident that nearly killed his girlfriend and him. Gordon then took him to Afterlife.
Lincoln promises Daisy that he would never hurt her. She says that she knows, and then decides that now that they have no secrets, she needs to tell him something. Daisy tells him that she saw the death of someone on their team.
Meanwhile, the S.H.I.E.L.D. team encounter Giyera on their mission to find out more about Malick and Hive’s plans. After a tough battle, S.H.I.E.L.D. gets him on their ship, but he eventually uses his powers to hijack it.
Before Giyera takes them all out, they get a message to Daisy about needing help. Lincoln tells her that it is time to assemble the Secret Warriors
