The Donald Trump campaign forced the shut down of a rape crisis center before a big rally.
The Hill reports that as Bethpage, N.Y. prepared for Trump’s campaign to make their way through town, The Safe Center RI was forced to close its doors on Thursday afternoon. A press release indicated that Grumman Road W. and adjacent properties would be closed while preparations were underway for a Donald Trump campaign rally scheduled for 7 p.m. at the nearby Grumman Studios in Bethpage, NY.
The crisis center provides service to over a thousand Long Island residents each year.
Afternoon appointments were canceled as a result of the rally. According to the release, the center services as many as two dozen victims of sexual violence and abuse on a daily basis.
The Facebook notice on The Safe Center LI read:
“Due to the Donald Trump rally being held at Grumman Studios today, our center will unfortunately be closed to the public after 1pm. Walk-in emergency appointments, regular appointments, and deliveries will not be able to access The Safe Center due to the road closure. We will resume full services at 9am Thursday morning. Thanks for your cooperation. If you have an emergency, please call our 24-Hour Hotline at 516-542-0404 or 911.”
As the site reads, The Safe Center RI formed in 2014 after a merger between the Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence (CADV) and the Coalition Against Child Abuse and Neglect (CCAN).
The center’s mission is “saving and changing the lives of the victims of domestic or dating abuse, child abuse, and rape and sexual assault.”
To hear that a Donald Trump rally is responsible for shutting down a rape and domestic abuse crisis center is understandably vexing to many. Victims depend on crisis centers such as these.
