People Who Watch Reality TV Are More Likely To Be Narcissists, Study Finds

Keeping Up With The Kardashians

There’s a link between people who watch reality TV shows and narcissism, according to researchers at the University of Pennsylvania and Ohio State University.

The study, published in the Psychology of Popular Media Culture, involved 565 undergraduates who described how much TV they watch on a daily basis and the genres they preferred.

Researchers determined that “stronger narcissistic tendencies were found among those who watched reality shows, sporting events, political talk shows and suspense/thriller/horror dramas,” reports the Independent

A narcissist is defined as “a person who is overly self-involved, and often vain and selfish.”

According to the study, “Narcissism in college students has continued to increase over time. Results are interpreted according to cultivation theory, which suggests that TV is an aspect of culture that may be responsible for cultivating greater narcissism in college students.”

Here are some of today’s most popular reality shows:

-Dancing With The Stars
-Keeping Up With The Kardashians
