3 stranded in river rescued after dam floodgates were opened

Authorities in Maine had to open floodgates to a dam to rescue three fishermen who became stranded on a rock by rapidly rising water.

WCSH6-TV reports (on.wcsh6.com/1RSOaSS) that they were fishing Saturday near Worumbo Falls, which is susceptible to rapid water level changes because of the nearby hydro dam.

Lisbon fire officials say they tried to rescue the three but had to turn back because of rough conditions on the Androscoggin River. They had to ask the hydro dam to open the floodgates so the water could recede. The three were then rescued uninjured.

Fire officials say the fishermen were in imminent danger when help arrived. They note there are several signs posted in the area, warning people not to enter the river because of the risk of rising water.
