Scots open with loss at World Curling

Scotland skip Eve Muirhead

Scotland began their World Women’s Curling Championship campaign with defeat to Sweden in Swift Current, Canada.

Eve Muirhead’s rink lost 5-3 in a cagey affair, having slipped 2-1 behind in the fifth end.

Muirhead, who won the title in 2013 and was a runner-up in 2010, will go up against Germany and Korea on Sunday.

Japan and Russia top the standings after two wins on the opening day of the round-robin stage.

Hosts Canada and defending champions Switzerland also made winning starts.

Swedish skip Margaretha Sigfridsson said: “We played really well. Games against Eve are really interesting. I think we were in the driver’s seat for the duration of the game, but it was very close.”
