Team Sky’s Swift pipped in Paris-Nice

Team Sky rider Ben Swift is 30th overall after stage one

Britain’s Ben Swift was beaten into second by home rider Arnaud Demare as the first full stage of the Paris-Nice ended with a sprint finish on Monday.

The Team Sky rider took the lead with 100m to go in the 198km stage from Conde-sur-Vesgre to Vendome, but Arnaud (FDJ) timed his surge perfectly.

Australian Michael Matthews (Orica-GreenEdge) retains the race lead.

Pre-race favourites Richie Porte and Geraint Thomas remain 12 and eight seconds behind respectively.

Tuesday’s second stage will favour the sprinters, covering 213.5km from Contres to Commentry in central France.
