Madonna broke down in tears during her concert in New Zealand on Saturday as she dedicated a song to her estranged son Rocco.
TMZ has the report that Madonna was addressing the crowd in between songs when she said “there’s no love stronger than a mother for her son” and then the waterworks started.
The singer dedicated the song “La Vie En Rose” to Rocco, 15, who is currently living with his father, Guy Ritchie, in London.
“But I would like to dedicate this song to him. It’s about a man, but I know he’ll be one day. I hope he hears this somewhere and knows how much I miss him.”
Madonna’s breakdown comes just days after she and ex-husband Ritchie were scolded by a New York judge for failing to come to an amicable custody agreement. Both parents attended the court hearing by phone. The judge urged them to come up with a solution on their own to the custody dispute.
The trouble started last fall when Rocco refused to return from the UK, choosing to live with his father instead of Madonna, against her wishes, according to People. Since then, Madonna has repeatedly expressed her sadness about the situation on social media but this weekend’s concert is the first time she’s really made a public statement about the situation.
Rocco will remain in London with his father for now. The next court hearing is in June. The boy is reportedly attending school in the U.K. but a source close to Madonna told People that she is worried about his recent behavior.
“Of course Rocco is stressed out. In the few months he has been in the U.K., even though he has just been enrolled, Rocco has missed months of schooling,” the source alleges. “[He] has been photographed by paparazzi smoking suspicious cigarettes multiple times, has broken his wrist, shaved his head and been without supervision for days at a time.”
“Madonna sees the damage that’s being done to Rocco, who has so much potential, which by his father’s influence is now being wasted and destroyed due to lack of guidance from a man who seems out for revenge instead of trying to raise his children to be successful human beings,” the source continued.
A source close to Guy Ritchie told People in January that he disagrees with Madonna’s parenting style.
“He wants Rocco to have the confidence he lacked growing up and thinks Madonna’s stern parental style is counterproductive,” the source said. “The welfare of Rocco is Guy’s priority.”
