Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama won his second PGA Tour event by beating Rickie Fowler at the fourth play-off hole at the Phoenix Open.

After hitting two pars and a birdie in the first three extra holes, the American drove into the water on the 17th, the ninth time he had found the water on that hole in his career.

It meant Matsuyama was able to win the Scottsdale event with a par four.

The 23-year-old’s previous PGA Tour victory in 2014 also needed a play-off.

Earlier, in front of another huge crowd after Saturday’s world record attendance of 201,003, Matsuyama finished birdie-birdie, before Fowler forced the play-off by calmly sinking a 10-footer for a birdie of his own.

They finished on a 14-under total 270, two strokes clear of American Harris English.

Ireland’s Shane Lowry carded a final round 68 to finish tied sixth on nine-under.
