“Kung Fu Panda 3” debuted at number one over the weekend with $41 million in ticket sales. The film features the voices of Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman, and Kate Hudson.
In the film, the evil Kai (J.K. Simmons) steals the chi from China’s kung fu masters, leaving Po (Black) with the impossible task of turning a village full of fun-loving, clumsy pandas into a powerful team of warriors.
Also at the box office, “The Revenant” took second place with $12.4 million, just one day after Oscar favorite Leonardo DiCaprio won the SAG Award for his role as wilderness man Hugh Glass.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” came in third with $10.8 million. The film is expected to pass $900 million in the United States this week.
Rounding out the top five were Casey Affleck’s deep sea rescue drama “The Finest Hours,” ($10.3 million) and Kevin Hart and Ice Cube’s comedy “Ride Along 2” ($8.3 million).
