If luck is on your side and you win Tuesday night’s Powerball jackpot, you won’t take home the full $75 million. A single ticket holder who matches all six numbers can choose between a lump sum payment or a 30-year annuity.
The lump sum payment is based on the cash value of the jackpot — $47.4 million before taxes. Jackpot winners who pick the annuity option will get the entire $75 million, but it will be split into 30 annual payments of $2.5 million each — and that’s before Uncle Sam gets his share.
According to USA Mega, 25 percent of the prize will be immediately deducted from the payment for federal taxes and a percentage will be withheld for state taxes if the state you live in taxes lottery winnings. If you are behind on child support payments or you owe the IRS back taxes, expect that amount to be scooped up before you collect your windfall.
