Joseph Mascolo is a soap opera icon, having played Stefano DiMera on “Days of Our Lives” for more than 30 years. He also was on “General Hospital” years ago as Nicholas Van Buren, and played Massimo Marone IV on “The Bold and the Beautiful.” Mascolo’s time as Stefano seems to be over now, but is he fully done with soaps?
Mascolo chatted with Soap Opera Digest for their new issue and Soap Shows shared some of the highlights. Many “Days of Our Lives” fans felt as if Stefano DiMera’s final storyline was underwhelming and did not do justice to all that Joseph had done in the role over the years. However, the actor details that he himself felt it was time to depart.
The actor shares that he had a small stroke last spring and he faced quite a bit of rehab during his recovery. He says that he felt it was time for Stefano to leave Salem and the writers came up with the storyline. While “Days of Our Lives” viewers may not necessarily be satisfied with how Hope killed Stefano, Mascolo says he loved it.
Is Stefano DiMera really dead now? There’s a long history of this villain popping back up again, and Mascolo teased that viewers will see Stefano again. However, it is believed that Stefano is truly dead and this reappearance will reflect that. In fact, there is buzz that Stefano’s body will be found and cause big problems for Hope and Rafe.
In the wake of Mascolo’s departure, there has been buzz that perhaps he could head over to “The Young and the Restless,” perhaps as Luca Santori’s father. As Celeb Dirty Laundry shares, CBS Soaps in Depth even tossed out the idea that Mascolo could pop up in that role.
However, given Mascolo’s real-life health issues, this seems unlikely. “Young and Restless” spoilers have definitely been teasing that Luca’s father will soon show up, and there is no doubt a healthy Mascolo could have been a fit for the role. However, “YR” fans feel pretty sure that someone else will be tapped to play this villainous role.
“Days of Our Lives” fans have been saddened to see Joseph Mascolo exit the role of Stefano DiMera, who caused a great deal of chaos in Salem for many years. As for those “The Young and the Restless” rumors, fans are betting that someone other than Mascolo will be playing Luca dad when the time comes.
