If you want all of your money at once, your lump-sum payment will be based on the cash value of Wednesday night’s $50 million Powerball jackpot — $31.8 million.
USA Mega reports that 25 percent of your prize ($7,950,000) will immediately be withheld for federal taxes. Expect to have state taxes deducted from the prize amount as well unless you live in a state that does not tax lottery winnings.
If you don’t want to take all the money at once, a 30-year annuity is an option. The annuity payments (based on the full $50 million jackpot) are split into 30 payments of approximately $1.7 million each — the first payment is typically issued shortly after your winning Powerball ticket is confirmed by state lottery officials.
Powerball tickets cost $2 each and are sold in 44 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. Drawings take place every Wednesday and Saturday night at 11 p.m. ET.
