The $30 million jackpot is considered an annuitized amount. That means you will get the full $30 million if you choose the 30-year annuity option. If you want all of your money at once, the lump-sum payment is based on the cash value of the jackpot — $18.9 million.
According to USA Mega, if you choose the lump-sum option, you will receive approximately $14,175,000 after federal taxes. A single ticket holder who wins the jackpot tonight and chooses the annuity would get 30 annual payments of $750,000 per year after federal taxes.
If you live in a state that taxes lottery winnings, the state will take their share before a check is issued. The Washington Post reports that the following states currently do no tax lottery winnings and/or have no state income tax — California, Delaware, Florida, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.
Mega Millions tickets cost $1 each and are sold at lottery retailers in 44 states, the District of Columbia, and the U. S. Virgin Islands. Drawings take place at 11 p.m. ET on Tuesday and Friday night.
