  • Va. pro-Confederate battle flag rally stirs debate

STAFFORD, Va. –  More than 70 people rallied with Confederate battle flags outside the courthouse in Stafford County, attracting a smaller number of counter-protesters. Rally co-organizers Jason Sulser of Stafford and Manny Vega of Midlothian organized Friday’s rally. They said the event was intended to honor history and their Southern heritage. The Free Lance-Star of Fredericksburg reported that many at the rally arrived with visible firearms. Vega and Sulser said the rally was to honor Civil War dead and to stand by the flag, which has ignited debate since the massacre of nine at a Charleston, South Carolina, church. The man suspected in the shootings had posed with the Confederate battle flag. About a half-dozen people came out to oppose the rally’s message. Some held signs that read, “Not my flag.”

  • Chistie, Rubio sleep over at Mitt Romney’s place

Former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney(AP Photo/Gregory Bull) 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney will be hosting two rival Republican presidential contenders at a holiday sleepover Friday evening. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio will both be staying over at Romney’s property in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, an aide to Romney confirmed. The aide, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of what the aide called the private nature of the event, said the former governor and his wife opened their home to the Christie and Rubio families after hearing they would be in town for the holiday weekend. Both candidates are scheduled to march in Wolfeboro’s Fourth of July parade. Christie, who formally jumped into the race this week, told reporters in New Hampshire Friday that he was grateful for the invitation. “I suspect there might be a little politics discussed tonight with Mitt and Ann, but me and Mary Pat, …

  • Windows 10 upgrade: You’ll have to wait

Are you counting down the days until you can upgrade your Windows 7 or 8 PC to Windows 10? You might need to exercise a little bit more patience. Though Microsoft (MSFT, Tech30) said a month ago that Windows 10 would become available on July 29, Microsoft clarified on Thursday that everyone won’t be able to upgrade on that day Microsoft will roll-out upgrades slowly, in waves. In a blog post, Windows Chief Terry Myerson said that Windows 10 upgrades will first go to “Windows Insiders,” a group of 5 million people who have been testing out a preview version of Windows 10. After the “Insiders,” Microsoft will begin notifying people who reserved copies of Windows 10 that they can upgrade, “slowly scaling up after July 29,” Myerson said. If you already reserved a copy, your PC has been confirmed as compatible. The slow roll-out is in part because Windows 10 is in very high …

  • Niki Lauda swapped trophies for free car washes

SILVERSTONE, England, Triple world champion Niki Lauda agrees with Lewis Hamilton’s comments about ‘ugly’ Formula One trophies but says they were so bad in his day that he swapped them for a lifetime of free car washes. “I binned them all, you’re absolutely right, because in my time they were most of them ugly and for me useless,” said the Austrian, now non-executive chairman of Hamilton’s Mercedes team. “On this point of view Lewis is right because the trophy should have a certain value when you look at them, that you like them,” Lauda told BBC radio at the British Grand Prix on Saturday. Lauda, who took his titles with McLaren and Ferrari and won 25 grands prix from 1974, said he had given trophies to his local garageman. “I said ‘If you give me a free car wash for the rest of my life you can have all of them’, and that is what …

  • New study shows South Africans using milk-based paint 49,000 years ago

An international research team led by the University of Colorado Boulder and the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa has discovered a milk-and ochre-based paint dating to 49,000 years ago that inhabitants may have used to adorn themselves with or to decorate stone or wooden slabs. While the use of ochre by early humans dates to at least 250,000 years ago in Europe and Africa, this is the first time a paint containing ochre and milk has ever been found in association with early humans in South Africa, said Paola Villa, a curator at the University of Colorado Museum of Natural History and lead study author. The milk likely was obtained by killing lactating members of the bovid family such as buffalo, eland, kudu and impala, she said. “Although the use of the paint still remains uncertain, this surprising find establishes the use of milk with ochre well before the introduction of domestic cattle …

  • Plane Passengers’ Near-Death Experience Gives Clues to Trauma’s Effect on Brain

FRIDAY, July 3, 2015 (HealthDay News) — A study involving people who thought they were about to die in a plane crash reveals new clues to the long-term impact that traumatic events have on the brain. In August of 2001, passengers on Air Transat flight 236 were on an overnight flight from Toronto to Lisbon, Portugal, when their plane ran out of fuel over the Atlantic Ocean. Many on the harrowing flight thought they might die that night, but in the end the plane was able to make an emergency landing on a small island in the Azores. Now, nearly 14 years later, a study led by Baycrest Health Sciences’ Rotman Research Institute in Toronto looked at some of those passengers to try to understand how traumatic events might affect people long-term. “Here we have a group of people who all experienced the same extremely intense trauma,” lead researcher Dr. Daniela Palombo said in a …

  • Kylie Jenner Slips Into A Sexy Dress And Nearly Grinds Her Booty Against Her Bodyguard

Posted on Sat Jul 4th, 2015 12:59pm PDT       By X17 Staff She may be just 17 years old, but she’s wearing a skintight red dress with a slit up her thigh, so it’s not silly (or out of line!) to say that Kylie Jenner’s outfit is “sexy.” Anyway… On Friday Kylie Jenner and her pooch went to the studio in Van Nuys to shoot some scenes for Keeping Up With The Kardashians, and she nearly bumped her tush into her bodyguard on the way out of the car. Um, oops? Kylie recently moved in to her own $2.7 million home, and while she’s spent much of the last week unpacking and decorating the pad, it sounds like she’s been having a blast doing it. She can’t act and her singing skills are pretty questionable, so perhaps she’ll try her hand at interior design? It’s not like she’s making any other big career moves! P.S. We tend …

  • Billy Graham’s daughter: My father’s spiritual leadership after the 9/11 attacks

My grandfather, Frank Graham, was a simple dairy farmer who never went past the eighth grade in school.  But in May, 1934, he met with some other businessmen in Charlotte, N.C., and together they prayed that God would raise up a man in America who would proclaim the Good News of peace with God through faith in Jesus Christ. His own son and my father became God’s answer to his prayer. Billy Graham has become a true national treasure frequently referred to as America’s pastor.  He has been beloved by Liberal and Conservative.  Republican and Democrat. Catholic and Protestant. Secular and religious.  The consistency of his faith, the humility of his character, and the simplicity of his lifestyle convey his authenticity as a man of God. But the value of his spiritual leadership has never been as evident as it was on September 14, 2001.  Three days after America was attacked, the nation was still …

  • Mexican firm sorry for royally selling president short

MEXICO CITY It could have been the height of diplomatic embarrassment for Mexico’s president. When Enrique Pena Nieto hosted towering King Felipe of Spain this week, it was a tongue-in-cheek paint ad ridiculing his 10- inch height deficit that grabbed the headlines. On Wednesday, Mexican paint company Comex posted on Twitter a digitally-altered photograph of the president standing on one of its paint pots, giving him a leg up over the monarch under the banner “una pintura de altura,” or “a paint of stature.” Comex apologized on Thursday for the photograph, deleting the post after it had been heavily retweeted. It said the Tweet was published “without the appropriate approvals”. (Reporting by Max de Haldevang; Editing by Dave Graham and Simon Gardner)
