DETROIT (Reuters) – Bond restructurings, negotiated settlements with bondholders and bond insurers, and tough talk with unionized workers are on the agenda as Detroit’s emergency financial manager tries to meet a self-imposed, six-week deadline to decide whether the city can get through its financial crisis without a bankruptcy filing.
Kevyn Orr, a former bankruptcy lawyer, in his first report to the state of Michigan since G [...]
Tar sands exploitation would mean game over for climate, warns leading scientist
Major international oil companies are buying off governments, according to the world’s most prominent climate scientist, Prof James Hansen. During a visit to London, he accused the Canadian government of acting as the industry’s tar sands salesman and “holding a club” over the UK and European nations to accept its “dirty” oil.
“Oil from tar sands makes sense only for a small number of people who are making a lot of money from that product,” he said in an interview with the Guardian. “I [...]
Bradford City rise again as a cut-price success on and off the field
Bradford City achieved promotion by handing out a lesson, and not just to Northampton Town. This emphatic victory rewarded an accomplished performance and the ascent to League One repaid the exemplary way that the club have been run in recent years.
Looking around Wembley, which was awash with proud Bradford fans for the second time in three months following February’s Capital One Cup final, it was clear that the club are harvesting the fruit that was planted after relegation from the third tier in 2007.
Back then the joint chairmen [...]
McConnell: ‘Tale’ about Benghazi
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell charged on Sunday the Obama administration “made up a tale” about the attacks on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, in fall 2012 because it “was inconvenient within six weeks of the election for the administration to, in effect, announce that it was a terrorist attack.”
NBC “Meet the Press” host David Gregory also asked McConnell about the talk of impeachment from some Republicans over Benghazi and their accusation it was a “massive cover-up.”
“I don’t think I’ve said any of those thi [...]

Imran Khan blames rival Pakistan party leader for killing of activist
Imran Khan, the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, on Sunday blamed the killing of a political activist on the eve of a partial rerun of voting in Karachi on Altaf Hussain, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader, who runs his party from exile in London.
Zahra Shahid, the vice-president of Khan’s PTI party in the southern province of Sindh, was gunned down outside her home in the upmarket Defence area of Karachi on Saturday.
Police said she died from a shot to the head in an attack that might have been either an attempt [...]
Paris St Germain refuse to allow Carlo Ancelotti to leave for Real Madrid
The Paris St Germain president, Nasser al-Khelaifi, insists Carlo Ancelotti will not be allowed to leave for Real Madrid.
The Italian coach met with Khelaifi and the club’s sporting director, Leonardo, on Sunday and asked to be released from his contract to move to the Bernabéu, where a vacancy is expected to materialise as José Mourinho continues to be linked with a return to Chelsea. “I have asked the club to leave and I am waiting for their answer because I am under contract,” Ancelotti said at the Ligue 1 awards cere [...]
Rumsfeld: ‘Zero tolerance’
Former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said on Sunday “there has to be zero tolerance” in military sexual assault cases and “there is an argument that can be made for handling them” differently than they are now.
NBC “Meet the Press” host David Gregory asked Rumsfeld if it’s necessary to change the way sexual assault crimes are reported up the chain of command and whether he thinks the military should move to using an outside, special prosecutor in these cases.
“Well, I don’t know that a special prosecutor is the answer, but there is an [...]
Google: America’s third political party
Follow me, not the government.

Congress is a dog that won’t go for a walk.
We can tug at its leash as hard as we want, but it sits in the middle of the sidewalk, barking a defiant “no.” It’s not a purposeful no. It’s just a refusal for the sake of it, couched in principle.
Then along comes America’s most ambitious politician.
No, it’s not Paul Ryan or Elizabeth Warren. It’s Larry Page.
The man who is Google stood at last week’s I/O 2013 conference and [...]

China does not restrict artistic freedom
The accusation that China “restricts” press and artistic freedom (Letters, 3 May) is untrue and unacceptable. The constitution of the People’s Republic of China explicitly enshrines Chinese citizens’ right to freedom of expression and press in its article 35. The Chinese government attaches great importance to and protects such rights in accordance with law. China now publishes 1,937 newspapers, 9,851 journals, 302,000 kinds of books, and owns over 500 radio and TV broadcasters. China also boasts the world’s [...]
