  • U.S. attorney general headed for racially charged St. Louis suburb

FERGUSON Mo. (Reuters) – U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder was due to visit Ferguson, Missouri, on Wednesday, hours after nearly 50 protesters were arrested in an 11th night of racially charged demonstrations over the killing of an unarmed black teenager by a white police officer.     The St. Louis County prosecutor’s office also was expected to begin presenting evidence to a grand jury investigating the Aug. 9 shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown, in a case that Governor Jay Nixon vowed would be treated as a “vigorous prosecution.” Holder said he planned to visit Ferguson, a St. Louis suburb that is home to a predominantly African-American population of 21,000, to be briefed on the progress of a separate civil rights investigation he has ordered into the Brown killing. In a special message to the community published online by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Holder said about 40 FBI agents have been assigned to the case, along …

  • Pat Quinn Could be Drag on Illinois Democrats

By Emily Cahn Posted at 5:02 a.m. today 0 Tweet Schock, left, and Davis, watch Rauner fire up the crowd. (Tom Williams/CQ Roll Call) SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The national political tide isn’t looking good for Democrats, but in Illinois this November, down-ballot candidates have an even bigger problem: the drag of Gov. Pat Quinn. The Land of Lincoln is a hotbed of political activity this cycle, with Democrats defending three freshmen House incumbents and looking to pick-off one more — Republican Rep. Rodney Davis in the ultra-competitive 13th District. All but one of those races take place outside of Chicago’s Cook County — the last bastion of support for Quinn and one of just three counties he carried in the state when he narrowly won the role in 2010. That geography is bad news for Democrats looking to tamp down losses in the midterms. There was no clearer example of Quinn’s problems than last week’s Illinois State Fair, where …

  • Cloud over Michael Brown inquiry as attorney general arrives in Ferguson

The investigation into the killing by a police officer of an unarmed Missouri teenager has been thrown into uncertainty with a tussle between the state governor and the local prosector, hours before a grand jury was due to begin hearing evidence and on the eve of a visit on Wednesday by the attorney general. As Ferguson experienced a night of relative calm – at least compared to the violent clashes of recent nights – governor Jay Nixon and St Louis County prosecutor Bob McCulloch issued duelling statements over the investigation into the death of Michael Brown, shot dead by a Ferguson police officer on 9 August. McCulloch, whose impartiality has been repeatedly called into question, threw down what amounted to a challenge to Nixon, saying that he would recuse himself from the inquiry into the death of Brown if the governor demanded he do. Nixon responded by saying that he would not make such a …

  • Fifa 15 hands-on, part one: physics and physicality

The ball drops deep into the Liverpool half. There’s a brief scramble, a moment of panic, and then a defender belts it toward the touchline; it hits the shoulder of Manchester City’s Samir Nasri and spins out of play. Later in the match, the ball goes out again after a tackle between Lovren and Kolarov – the City player thinks that the throw is about to be given to Liverpool and wheels around the complain to the ref – but the decision goes his way, and he immediately backs off. These are small moments of drama, the sorts of things we’re going to see every weekend of the forthcoming season. But for the Fifa series, they represent brand new elements of the simulation. Every year, the team at EA Sports in Vancouver tells us about major overhauls, and every year we have to squint to see them. However, in the several matches I played at …

  • Love makes sex better for most women

Love and commitment can make sex physically more satisfying for many women, according to a Penn State Abington sociologist. In a series of interviews, heterosexual women between the ages of 20 and 68 and from a range of backgrounds said that they believed love was necessary for maximum satisfaction in both sexual relationships and marriage. The benefits of being in love with a sexual partner are more than just emotional. Most of the women in the study said that love made sex physically more pleasurable. “Women said that they connected love with sex and that love actually enhanced the physical experience of sex,” said Beth Montemurro, associate professor of sociology. Women who loved their sexual partners also said they felt less inhibited and more willing to explore their sexuality. “When women feel love, they may feel greater sexual agency because they not only trust their partners but because they feel that it is OK to …

  • Liberia fights Ebola in capital, West Africa toll tops 1,200

MONROVIA/GENEVA (Reuters) – Liberia battled on Tuesday to halt the spread of the Ebola disease in its crowded, run-down oceanside capital Monrovia, recording the most new deaths as fatalities from the world’s worst outbreak of the deadly virus rose above 1,200. The epidemic of the hemorrhagic disease, which can kill up to 90 percent of those it infects, is ravaging the three small West African states of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, and also has a toehold in Nigeria, Africa’s biggest economy. As the Geneva-based World Health Organization rushed to ramp up the global response to the outbreak, including emergency food deliveries to quarantined zones, it announced that deaths had risen to 1,229 as of Aug. 16, out of 2,240 cases. Between Aug. 14 and 16, Liberia recorded the most new deaths, 53, followed by Sierra Leone with 17 and Guinea with 14. On a more hopeful note, the WHO expressed “cautious optimism” that the …

  • Did Madonna dump her BF mid-vacation?

Justin Timberlake sparks outrage for calling Madonna his ninja The pop icon has been spotted out and about without Timor Steffens on her summer getaway. Steffens, who is 30 years Madonna’s junior, was seen in the South of France with the “Vogue” singer Aug. 2, but he has been conspicuously missing from the trip ever since. E! News reports that Steffens, a choreographer, took off Aug. 11, the day of Madonna’s son Rocco’s birthday, meaning he also missed out on her 56th birthday celebration in Ibiza just a few days later. Madonna finally shows up for jury duty — an hour late But an insider says not to rush to conclusions about his absence from both celebrations. “Madonna wouldn’t just break up with someone in the middle of a vacation,” a source says. “I can’t see her doing that. She really is never serious with any of these young guys, they are just flings that …

  • Why is the New York Times pushing pot?

The legalize-pot bandwagon has a new conductor. With the single-mindedness of Hillary Clinton seeking the Oval Office, the New York Times is pushing for legalization of marijuana. The paper has published no fewer than eight editorials or op-eds approving speedy decriminalization of pot in just the past few weeks. What’s it all about? Let us dismiss conjecture that the Times is gunning for a Public Service Pulitzer, which they have not won for a decade. Instead, two thoughts occur.   First, the Times may view decriminalizing marijuana as the next great progressive wave, following on the heels of same-sex marriage and, in earlier years, abortion rights. A smaller wave, to be sure, but one that liberals (and libertarians) can ride with enthusiasm.  ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT A second reason may be more compelling — the Times needs to build its online circulation to survive. What better way than to embrace a cause especially popular with Millenials, …

  • China Eastern plane aborts landing as traffic controllers take a nap

BEIJING (Reuters) – A China Eastern Airlines Corp passenger plane that had started its night-time descent into a Wuhan airport was forced to abort its landing after air traffic controllers had dozed off, an investigation report found. The incident, which took place on July 8, is the third mishap in two months involving the Chinese carrier. A transcript of the flight recording released by the Civil Aviation Administration of China on Tuesday shows that the China Eastern flight crew made repeated attempts to contact the duty flight controllers at Wuhan Tianhe Airport – twice in English and once in Chinese. Those calls went unanswered. The airplane was forced to return to 900 meters and circle the airport for about 10 minutes before landing, the report said. The incident occurred at between 2 to 3 a.m. China Eastern has suffered other mishaps in recent weeks. On July 17, a China Eastern airplane landed off the runway …
