  • U.S. East Coast braces for ‘historic’ blizzard on Monday

(Reuters) – A potential blizzard was heading toward a wide swath of the U.S. East Coast on Sunday, prompting weather alerts and storm warnings from New Hampshire to Philadelphia, the National Weather Service said. A blizzard watch will go into effect on Monday afternoon for Boston and New York City, where the government’s severe weather website warned residents of a “potentially historic storm” that may bring up to 2 feet (61 cm) of snow. The severe weather also led to winter storm warnings and advisories in states stretching from Maine to Indiana, an area where more than 60 million people live, the weather service said. American Airlines has canceled a handful of flights, including a Monday flight from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to London’s Heathrow airport and one scheduled to depart on Monday from Heathrow to New York, spokesman Matt Miller said. Southwest, Delta and other carriers had not canceled flights but …

  • Perpetrators of violence in Nigeria will be denied visas for U.S.: Kerry

LAGOS (Reuters) – The United States will deny entry to anyone responsible for stoking violence during Nigeria’s election next month, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Sunday, while urging the government not to delay the poll. Kerry was in Nigeria to urge its rival political camps to respect the outcome of a Feb. 14 presidential election. Washington is concerned that post-poll violence could undermine the stability of Africa’s top oil producer and hamper efforts to tackle the Islamist militants of Boko Haram. “Given the stakes it’s absolutely critical that these elections are conducted peacefully,” Kerry told reporters in the commercial capital Lagos after meeting President Goodluck Jonathan and main opposition rival Muhammadu Buhari. In the last election in 2011, when Buhari lost to Jonathan, three days of rioting killed more than 800 people and displaced 65,000. “Nobody gains by violence, nobody gains by turning a political disagreement into a killing spree … The …

  • Northeast blizzard: What you need to know if you’re traveling

The Northeast is bracing for a storm that could throw off travel plans not only on the east coast, but around the nation. A potentially “historic and destructive” nor’easter is expected to plow north through New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts — including New York City and Boston — starting Monday and could cripple travel in the region. Over the weekend, authorities issued winter storm and blizzard watches and forecasts called for between one and two feet of snow. Storm of that size would likely shut down arrivals and departures from important airports, causing a ripple effect. If you’re traveling this week, here’s what you need to know: American Airlines (AAL) and U.S. Airways: The airlines will let customers flying to or from two dozen Northeast airports rebook reservations made for Monday and Tuesday without a fee. The cities include Albany, Baltimore, Boston, New York, Newark, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. More from American. More from …

Wichita, KS (SportsNetwork.com) – Ron Baker had 15 points, Tekele Cotton added 10 and No. 14 Wichita State routed Drake 74-40 on Sunday afternoon. The Shockers have won 26 consecutive games in Missouri Valley Conference play, the league’s longest streak since Kansas’ 34-game run from 1922-24. Fred VanVleet posted eight points, six assists and four steals for Wichita State (18-2, 8-0 MVC), which has won eight straight since losing to George Washington in Hawaii on Christmas. Darius Carter netted all six of his points in the opening minutes as the Shockers raced out to a 13-4 start. • Greece’s Syriza headed for big win

25 January 2015 Last updated at 21:39 Please turn on JavaScript. Media requires JavaScript to play. The BBC’s Mark Lowen: “Many here are finally smiling again” Anti-austerity party Syriza is heading for a clear victory in Greece’s general election, official projections say. The left-wing party is projected to win about 150 seats, just one short of an absolute majority, though officials say that number could change. Syriza leader Alexis Tsipras, who has pledged to renegotiate Greece’s debt with international creditors, said “today the Greeks wrote history”. The ruling New Democracy party is projected to come a distant second. Outgoing Prime Minister Antonis Samaras has admitted defeat and phoned Mr Tsipras to congratulate him. ‘Thing of the past’ Appearing before jubilant crowds in the capital Athens, Mr Tsipras said Greek voters gave Syriza “a clear, powerful mandate”. “You are an example of history which is changing. “The troika for Greece is the thing of the past,” …

  • Can new tech boost safety in Uber cars, taxis?

AsterRide is a smartphone app that pairs passengers with taxis or black-car services. AsterRide When you tap open the AsterRide app to hail a taxi, you’ll see something a bit different from other ride-hailing apps: a feature called InstaAlert. It’s designed to help passengers notify friends or family that they’re in a taxi and to send an update once the rider arrives at their destination in one piece. AsterRide is marketing itself as a safe alternative in the ride-hailing industry. Its timing is auspicious — Uber, taxis and other ride-for-hire rivals have made headlines around the world over some of their drivers allegedly engaging in sexual assaults, kidnappings and beatings. Ride-hailing apps — like Uber, Lyft and Flywheel — let passengers use a smartphone to hail a taxi, black-car service or a personal driver using their own car. The companies behind these apps are aiming to convince passengers that the rides they hail are safe. …

  • Pro-marijuana ‘tweets’ are sky-high on Twitter

Related images(click to enlarge) Analyzing every marijuana-related Twitter message sent during a one-month period in early 2014, researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have found that the “Twitterverse” is a pot-friendly place. In that time, more than 7 million tweets referenced marijuana, with 15 times as many pro-pot tweets sent as anti-pot tweets. The findings are reported online Jan. 22 in the Journal of Adolescent Health and will appear in February in the journal’s print edition. Most of those sending and receiving pot tweets were under age 25, with many in their teens, a demographic group at increased risk for developing marijuana dependence and other drug-related problems. “It’s a concern because frequent marijuana use can affect brain structures and interfere with cognitive function, emotional development and academic performance,” said first author Patricia A. Cavazos-Rehg, PhD, an assistant professor of psychiatry and scholar in the Washington University Institute for Public Health. “The …

  • After Ebola, WHO to set up contingency fund, develop ‘surge capacity’

GENEVA (Reuters) – The Executive Board of the World Health Organisation (WHO) agreed on Sunday to create a contingency fund and an emergency workforce to respond quickly to crises after strong criticism of the agency’s delay in confronting the Ebola epidemic. Director-general Dr. Margaret Chan acknowledged that the outbreak showed the need to strengthen WHO’s crisis management and to streamline procedures for recruiting frontline workers. “We give member states our commitment to deliver on the action-oriented agenda,” Chan said at the end of the board’s special session. In the past year, 21,724 Ebola cases have been reported in nine countries and 8,641 people have died, according to the WHO which says West Africa’s outbreak is ebbing. A resolution seeking the reforms, brought by the United States and South Africa, was adopted by consensus at the 34-member forum. “The WHO we have is not the WHO we need, not the WHO we needed to respond to …

  • When will Obama stop making false claims about Citizens United?

FILE — Jan. 22, 2015: President Obama speaks during a visit to the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas. (AP Photo/Charlie Riedel) At almost the same time that protesters mad about the Citizens United decision were disrupting the start of the Supreme Court’s session on Wednesday, the White House issued a “Statement from the President” condemning the decision on its fifth anniversary. And once again, President Obama repeated the same false claim about “foreign corporations” that he made in his State of the Union speech back in 2010. This White House seems to believe that if you think up a good political attack theme, stick with it no matter what the truth is. One can certainly debate the effect of Citizens United, which lifted the ban on independent political expenditures (i.e., independent political speech), and whether it has been beneficial to our democratic system. As a former member of the Federal Election Commission that enforces our …

  • Iowa billboard mannequin startles motorists, loses job

(Reuters) – A car dealer is taking down an oversized mannequin that had been placed atop a roadside billboard advertisement in rural Iowa after a number of alarmed drivers called the 911 emergency number to report a man who looked like he was going to jump. “I hate to take it down, but in the interest of public safety I decided to,” Brad Deery, owner of 10 car dealerships in Iowa, told Reuters by telephone on Friday. Deery said the sheriff in Des Moines County asked him to remove the mannequin because drivers were becoming distracted and that some could be tempted to try to climb the sign and take a selfie. The billboard on U.S. Route 61 advertises Deery’s West Burlington dealership. The sign reads “I can see Deery Toyota, Nissan, Mazda from here,” Deery said. The mannequin is posed as though it is looking off at distant car lots. The Hawk Eye, a …
