  • Skulls found near witchcraft books at Connecticut transfer station, police say

HARTFORD, Conn. –  The skulls of an older man and woman were found at a Connecticut waste transfer station near some books and videos on witchcraft and Satan, police said Friday. The skulls and a jaw bone were found Thursday at a Stamford transfer station in a pile of recyclables brought from the home of a Fairfield man who had recently died, said Stamford police Lt. Diedrich Hohn. ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT “What we are hearing from sources and stuff is that this guy, who has passed away, was into the occult,” Hohn said. “That’s what we’re investigating now.” One skull was complete, the other was missing its mandible (jawbone), which was found nearby, Hohn said. Hohn said officers sifting through the debris from the man’s home also came across several books on witchcraft and books and videos dealing with Satanism. The skulls and the mandible were sent to the medical examiner’s office in Farmington, Connecticut, where …

  • Big money flowing into small elections this year

By ANDY SULLIVAN October 31, 2014 Money Political groups that took advantage of loosened campaign-finance rules spent hundreds of millions of dollars in the 2012 U.S. presidential election. This year, they’re cropping up in state and local races as well. Wealthy individuals and interest groups of all stripes are increasingly setting up political committees that can steer unlimited sums to small-dollar contests for state legislature, sheriff and school board. Four years after the Supreme Court ruled that Congress cannot restrict spending by political groups not directly affiliated with candidates, the “Super PACs” and other spending committees that sprung up in the wake of that decision are becoming a fixture in races farther down on ballot sheets, where their money can have a greater impact. In some cases, they are looking to bypass a gridlocked Washington that likely will not be more productive after the Nov. 4 congressional elections. In other cases, local operators are adopting …

  • Homes for the homeless…inside billboards

Billboards that double as homes could help solve homelessness in cities. Billboard ads are expensive to construct, maintain and rent, but they don’t serve any functional purposes — so Michal Polacek redesigned them to house the homeless. His concept, called “Project Gregory,” would create wooden billboard structures fitted with noise and thermal insulation. They’d have two rooms: One with a table, two chairs and bed, the other with a toilet, sink and shower — all in less than 200 square feet. Polacek, 26, came up with the concept as part of his master’s dissertation at the Academy of Art in Banksa Bystrica, Slovakia, about three years ago. He brought on Matej Nedorolík to help with communications (Polacek doesn’t speak English). The two also head up an architecture and design firm. Related: Urban infrastructure gets a second life This week, they’ve launched a formal effort to turn their billboard concept into a reality. Project Gregory launched …

Fort Worth, TX (SportsNetwork.com) – With three races to go in the 2014 Camping World Truck Series season, three drivers are in a tight battle for the championship. Matt Crafton, the defending series champion, holds an 18-point lead over Ryan Blaney and a 22-point advantage over Darrell Wallace Jr. Johnny Sauter, who is Crafton’s teammate at ThorSport Racing, is a now a long shot for the title, as he trails by 40 points. No driver has won back-to-back championships in the 20-year history of this series. The series is racing at Texas Motor Speedway on Friday night and then competing one week later at Phoenix International Raceway before wrapping up the season on Nov. 14 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. In June, Crafton won at Texas for the first time in 27 truck races there. The series has been competing at this 1.5-mile track twice each season since 1999. • Whovians: Bake a Pudding Brain Cake in time for Halloween

The 12th Doctor in the BBC’s “Doctor Who” believes that all humans are pudding brains. What better way to embrace his opinion than by creating your very own pudding brain for Halloween? The pudding brains at the BBC have released the official Pudding Brain Cake recipe, as well as detailed video instructions for assembling the treat. Assuming our pudding brains can manage to read the recipe, watch the video, stumble around our kitchen and mix together the right ingredients in the right order, we may find ourselves gobbling up a Pudding Brain Cake. Of course, the BBC’s recipe has the ingredients measured in grams, so us pudding brains in the US will need to convert them into units of measurement we understand. But it’s probably worth the effort if you want to impress your pudding-brained friends. Don’t you want to shove this Pudding Brain cake in your mouth? Video screenshot by Anthony Domanico/CNET

  • NASA Program Enhances Climate Resilience at Agency Facilities

[image-50] A new study in the latest issue of the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society provides an in-depth look at how NASA facilities have been affected by climate extremes and climate change in recent years and how the agency is preparing for the future. Using a blend of weather data, global and regional climate model outputs, and advances in the understanding of the climate system, the study finds that many types of extreme events are expected to increase in frequency and magnitude in the future and pose hazards to NASA’s mission, infrastructure and workforce. The study found that by the 2050s, sea level rise alone could lead to an increase of 50 percent or more in coastal flooding frequency with varying impacts to NASA facilities, a high percentage of which are located near coastlines. In total, the agency has approximately $32 billion in constructed assets and about 64,000 employees, contractors and partners. “Risk management …

  • Sleep Apnea May Steal Some of Your Memory: Study

FRIDAY, Oct. 31, 2014 (HealthDay News) — Sleep apnea may make it hard for you to remember simple things, such as where you parked your car or left your house keys, a small study suggests. Tests on 18 people with severe sleep apnea showed that this ability — called spatial memory — was impaired when sleep apnea disrupted rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, even when other stages of sleep weren’t affected. REM sleep is the deepest level of sleep, during which dreams typically occur. “We’ve shown for the first time that sleep apnea, an increasingly common medical condition, might negatively impact formation of certain memories, even when the apnea is limited to REM sleep,” study leader Dr. Andrew Varga, a clinical instructor of medicine in the division of pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine at the NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City, said in an NYU news release. “Our findings suggest memory loss …

  • Lily Allen Dresses As Dr. Luke At Kate Hudson’s Halloween Party

Posted on Fri Oct 31st, 2014 10:49am PDT       By X17 Staff Lily Allen’s claws are out! The singer wasn’t pulling any punches when she dressed in scrubs, a stethoscope and the name tag “Dr. Luke Gynecology Dept” on it. Ouch! Earlier this month, Kesha made shocking allegations in a lawsuit claiming that the famed music producer Dr. Luke emotionally, sexually and physically abused her for 10 years. Dr. Luke has subsequently filed two lawsuits against Kesha’s mother for defamation , asserting they were trying to extort him to get out of a record contract. Since the news hit, it’s been a pretty sticky situation for both parties. Many artists have kept mum on the subject, refusing to take sides but — it’s pretty clear whose side the “F*ck You” singer is on! Lily and Kesha have been friends for years — so this definitely looks like a sign of support to us …   SEE THE …

  • November midterms: A tale of two elections

For some weeks now on our Fox News show “Political Insiders,” I have been expressing my concern that if we look at the polls, we seem to have two elections going on. With only days to go before the midterm elections we continue to see a true anomaly which is a strong national position for the Republicans nationally and yet a host of very close elections for dozens of key races in the Senate, House and for governor. ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT Despite millions of dollars spent on scorched earth negative television advertising, from both parties, the electorate seems strangely detached and disengaged from it all. Even if you credit the Democrats with running superior tactical campaigns in individual races — which is quite disputable — what still is baffling is why such a massive national mood is not being translated into an at least the traditional “throw the bums out” groundswell. Frustrated, angry and scared as …

  • Police led to Alabama drug suspect by his dog

BIRMINGHAM Ala. (Reuters) – Police in Alabama found a suspected drug dealer who was hiding in tall grass near his home after the man’s dog, tail wagging enthusiastically, led officers to him, police said on Thursday. Edward Melvin Henderson fled his home in Prattville as officers pulled up to the residence with a search warrant on Tuesday, said Paula Barlow, spokeswoman for the Prattville Police Department. Henderson ran, jumped off a ravine and continued running. As officers approached the ravine, a mixed breed pit bull/husky later identified as Bo came running up, she said. Henderson had run into a wooded area and was hiding. Two officers looked at Bo and pointed in the direction Henderson had run and told the dog to go and get him. Investigators trailed Bo, who was wagging his tail after locating his owner lying in high grass, Barlow said. The search warrant resulted in the recovery of methamphetamine and components …
