Two workers have died after an incident at a copper mine in western Tasmania. Police say the two Queenstown men, aged 25 and 45, died after the workplace incident at the Mount Lyell copper mine shortly before 11am (AEDT) on Monday. Their next of kin were notified. One of the bodies was taken to Queenstown’s West Coast district hospital, but the other remained at the scene. The incident was being investigated by police, the coroner and Workplace Standards.

A comprehensive audit is yet to be ordered of the uranium mining operation which was the source of a million-litre radioactive spill in the Northern Territory. The spill, which contains acidic slurry as well as radioactive waste and mud, happened at the Ranger uranium mine in the Kakadu national park in the early hours of Saturday as staff were evacuated.
