  • Angus King Endorses Republican Senate Colleague

By Niels Lesniewski Posted at 6:07 p.m. on Oct. 24 0 Tweet King, left, endorsed a Republican for re-election. (Tom Williams/CQ Roll Call File Photo) Independent Maine Sen. Angus King, a member of the Democratic caucus, is backing a senior Senate Republican in his bid for re-election. Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., is not facing a significant challenge on Nov. 4, but the support from King is interesting considering the independent senator’s potential role in a closely divided or tied Senate. King and Alexander are both members of the informal caucus of former governors. The two senators are personally close, but Alexander also is a former Republican Conference chairman with close ties to Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. “Senator Alexander is the kind of person who we absolutely need in the United States Senate. He is someone who listens, and who is interested in solving problems,” King said in making the endorsement, which was first reported …

  • Is the U.S. holding too much oil in reserve?

The U.S. has the world’s largest emergency stockpile of oil. Does America have too much oil in its reserves? Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon fired off a letter this week asking the Department of Energy to study the “size and make-up” of the U.S.’ Strategic Petroleum Reserve. It comes fresh on the heels of a report on Monday from the non-partisan Government Accountability Office that also called for a similar review. The U.S. has the largest emergency stockpile of oil in the world. And now that the country’s oil production is booming, there’s questions if America needs to hold so much crude in reserve. The Department of Energy didn’t respond to a request for comment. Congress created the reserve in response to the 1973 oil embargo, which caused a supply shock and a recession. But the United States is now on track to surpass Saudi Arabia as the world’s largest energy producer next year. That’s …

  • Olesen opens up 3-shot lead in Australia

Perth, Australia (SportsNetwork.com) – Thorbjorn Olesen fired a 5-under 67 in Saturday’s third round to take a 3-shot lead into the final day of the ISPS Handa Perth International. Olesen, who held the first-round lead along with Australian John Wade, finished 54 holes at 16-under-par 200, three shots ahead of Sihwan Kim. Olesen has one win on the European Tour, which came at the 2012 Sicilian Open. “It’s been a couple of years since I won, so definitely I’ll feel the nerves,” said Olesen. “I’ve been in contention in big tournaments and I know how it feels. But it’ll be great to get that victory, so it’ll definitely be on my mind. I just want to be out there tomorrow, be aggressive and have fun.” Kim, who needs to finish second or better this week in order to keep his tour card, shot his third straight round in the 60s at Lake Karrinyup Country Club …

  • Iran executes Reyhaneh Jabbari despite global appeals for retrial

Iran has executed a woman who killed a man she said was trying to sexually abuse her, in defiance of an international campaign to spare her life. Reyhaneh Jabbari, 26, was hanged at dawn on Saturday in a Tehran prison for the murder of a former intelligence official, the official IRNA news agency reported on Saturday. A message posted on the homepage of a Facebook campaign that was set up to try to save her, but which now states “rest in peace,” confirmed the report. Jabbari, an interior designer, had spent five years on death row for the stabbing of Morteza Abdolali Sarbandi in 2007. The UN and groups including Amnesty International had said her confession was obtained under intense pressure and threats from Iranian prosecutors, and she should have had a retrial. Ahmed Shaheed, the UN’s human rights rapporteur on Iran, said in April that the killing was an act of self defence: Sarbandi …

  • The Evil Within review

Made by Shinji Mikami, the man responsible for the awesome Resident Evil 4, The Evil Within has top survival-horror pedigree. It also adheres rigidly to genre cliches, featuring well-worn motifs such as the deserted mansion and twisted hospital, spliced with the stealth and messy, desperate combat perfected in The Last Of Us. Making up for a lack of scares by being very nasty, the opening scenes alone generate more spilled claret than a Conservative club ball. Its generally rewarding combat and level of challenge are let down by dingy scenery and slightly awkward third-person action, where the hero often seems to be crouching in front of the very thing you’re trying to look at. The script and voice acting are no better, and the central character, Detective Castellanos, has a personality somewhere between a brick and the speaking clock. His cohorts are just as dissociated, remaining inexplicably calm in the face of endless explosive disembowelment. …

  • Mali’s first Ebola case, a two-year-old girl, dies: officials

BAMAKO (Reuters) – A two-year-old girl who was Mali’s first case of Ebola died on Friday, shortly after the World Health Organization warned that many people had potentially been exposed to the virus because she was taken across the country while ill. The girl had traveled with her grandmother hundreds of kilometers by bus from Guinea via Mali’s capital to the western town of Kayes, where she was diagnosed on Thursday. Health workers were scrambling to trace hundreds of potential contacts in a bid to prevent Ebola taking hold in Mali. The worst Ebola outbreak on record has killed 4,900 people, mainly in nearby Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. A global response to the epidemic is being rolled out but experts warn that tens of thousands more people are at risk. In a statement on Friday night, Mali’s government confirmed the death of the girl, who has not been identified. “In this moment of sadness, …

  • The Foxhole: Graham Nash on CSNY, the Hollies and the choosing of life over death

In the fall of 1969, the members of rock’s newest super-group, CSNY – an improbable and highly combustible vehicle for the individual and collective genius of David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, and Neil Young – were settling into the San Francisco area, preparing to record their first album together. These loose sessions would produce the landmark record Déjà Vu (1970), later ranked # 148 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Crosby, the nominal leader of the group, had set up digs in a rambling country house in Novato, thirty miles north of the city, with his two lovers, Christine Hinton and Debbie Donovan. Jerry Garcia, who would play pedal steel guitar on Nash’s pop classic, “Teach Your Children,” was a frequent visitor, as were other members of the Grateful Dead, who lived down the street. The sex, drugs, and freedom were highly intoxicating, and for the members of …

  • Florida man shoots 400-pound bear breaking into his house

ORLANDO Fla. (Reuters) – A Florida man shot and killed a 400-pound (180-kg) black bear after it broke into his house two nights in a row to get to a bag of dog food, a state wildlife officer said on Friday. “I felt in danger enough that since it wouldn’t leave I had to shoot it,” said Victor Peters of Lady Lake of the Wednesday night incident in a video interview posted online by the Orlando Sentinel. Killing a bear in Florida is illegal. Wildlife officer Greg Workman of the Florida Fish Wildlife Conservation said he expects to hand the case to prosecutors by early next week for their consideration at the completion of his investigation. “It sounds like he did what he could do to try to keep the bear from coming back,” Workman said. “We’re looking at all sides to make the best decision.” Bears and humans cross paths, occasionally fatally for the …
