  • Citing death threats, Texas authorities release more footage of Sandra Bland in jail

HEMPSTEAD, Texas –  Texas authorities on Tuesday released several hours of footage showing Sandra Bland during her three days in jail, saying they wanted to dispel rumors that she was dead before arriving there. Waller County Judge Trey Duhon said such conspiracy theories — including one that Bland’s mug shot was taken after her death — have prompted death threats against county officials. “Because of some of the things that’s gone out on social media, this county has been literally attacked,” he said at a news conference, adding that the FBI is investigating the most serious threats. “Sandra Bland was alive and well” until she was found hanging on July 13 in her cell at the Waller County Jail, Duhon said. Authorities have ruled that Bland’s death, three days after her arrest during a confrontational traffic stop, was a suicide. The video released shows her arriving at the jail, being questioned by a jailer filling …

  • U.S. House conservative files motion to oust Speaker Boehner

WASHINGTON A conservative member of the U.S. House of Representatives filed a motion on Tuesday to try to oust fellow Republican John Boehner from his leadership position, saying he was tired of a “punitive culture” against dissidents in the lawmaking body. It is unlikely the motion by Representative Mark Meadows to remove Boehner as Speaker of the House will pass or even come to a vote, but it highlights the friction within the Republican Party ahead of a presidential election in 2016. Meadows is a second-term lawmaker from North Carolina and a member of the House Freedom Caucus, a group of conservatives who often are at odds with Boehner. Recently they have disagreed on whether the Export-Import Bank, a government export credit agency, should be continued. Conservatives are trying to kill the bank; Boehner supports it. Recently a committee chairman, presumably acting on orders of Boehner, stripped Meadows of his subcommittee chairmanship after Meadows and …

  • Huckabee blitzes Fox shows before debate rankings

Mike Huckabee parted with Fox News earlier this year to pursue another White House bid. But after an incendiary remark about the Iran nuclear deal, it’s as though the former Arkansas governor never left. On Tuesday, Huckabee appeared on “Outnumbered,” Fox’s afternoon talk show that features one male guest host with four female panelists. The night before, Huckabee was a guest on the channel’s two top-rated programs, “The Five” and “The O’Reilly Factor.” Huckabee showed up on a Fox News web program, too. Huckabee has drawn considerable media attention this week after accusing President Obama of marching Israelis to “the door of the oven” with a tentative deal with Iran meant to prevent it from building a nuclear arsenal. His increased facetime on Fox News, where he hosted a weekend talk show for more than six years, also comes as 16 Republicans jockey to qualify for next month’s presidential debate on Fox. He has also …

  • Kansas City Chiefs safety Eric Berry cleared to return after lymphoma treatments

Sept. 14, 2014: Kansas City Chiefs strong safety Eric Berry (29) walks off the field during the second half of an NFL football game against the Denver Broncos in Denver. (AP) ST. JOSEPH, Mo. –  Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry has been cleared by the Kansas City Chiefs’ medical staff and his doctors to return to the practice field after undergoing treatment for lymphoma. The Chiefs said in a brief statement late Tuesday that Berry would join quarterbacks, rookies and injured players in the first day of training camp Wednesday at Missouri Western. Berry was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease last December, shortly after complaining of pain in his chest following a game against Oakland. He was treated at Emory University in Atlanta and went through the final round of it in June. Berry underwent a battery of tests Tuesday, when rookies and select veterans reported to training camp. He was cleared to take the field late …

  • Erdogan in China amid Uighur tension

Mr Erdogan is considering purchasing a long-range missile system from China Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is in Beijing for a state visit to meet Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping. Mr Erdogan is leading a delegation of businessmen in talks expected to focus on economic ties. But discussions may also cover Turkey’s controversial plans to buy a Chinese long-range missile system. His visit comes after recent diplomatic tensions over China’s treatment of its Muslim Uighur people who have close cultural and religious ties with Turks. About 100 Turkish business leaders and investors are accompanying Mr Erdogan on the visit which ends on Thursday. The BBC’s John Sudworth in Beijing says the visit is a reflection of the growing importance of a trade relationship now worth about $24m (£15.4m) a year. But Turkey’s current border crisis with Syria may give renewed impetus to its on-again-off-again deal to buy a Chinese long-range missile system, a plan that has …

  • Heavy-metal band captchas will rock your face off

Are you tough enough to handle Metal Captcha? Screenshot by Amanda Kooser/CNET Everybody hates captchas. They’re weird little security devices that frustrate innocent Web surfers who spend precious minutes trying to unscramble garbled text and numbers just to be able to submit a form and confirm their identity as actual human beings. Not all captchas have to be annoying little monsters. They can be entertaining. All you need is the Metal Captcha service from HeavyGifts, a self-described “metal and rock fanatic creative design factory.” Real people will love it while bots will be turned away. The heavy-metal version of a captcha is sometimes even more challenging than a regular one. Metal-band logos are notoriously cryptic, the fonts are jagged and ragged and sometimes you just get a symbol. It will take a pretty knowledgeable metalhead to successfully conquer all of the Metal Captcha offerings. I’ve been sitting here running captchas for several minutes and I’m …

  • A single hair shows researchers what a bear has been eating

Related images(click to enlarge) U.S. and Canadian researchers have found they can get a good idea of a grizzly bear’s diet over several months by looking at a single hair. The technique, which measures residues of trace metals, can be a major tool in determining if the threatened animals are getting enough of the right foods to eat. The technique can also help determine how much mercury bears are ingesting. A study published last year by many of the same researchers found that two out of three grizzlies sampled in coastal British Columbia had mercury levels exceeding a neurochemical effect threshold proposed for polar bears. “You can use the technology for both applications,” said Marie Noël, lead author of both the mercury study and a more recent study, published in Science of the Total Environment, on how the technique works. “You can see how much mercury they’re getting but also estimate how much salmon they’re …

  • California lawmaker battles recall by anti-vaccine activists

SACRAMENTO, Calif. The California lawmker who made it harder for parents to opt out of vaccinating their children, a stance that earned him death threats, is now launching a campaign to save his job, days after the state certified a recall effort against him. Democratic State Senator Richard Pan, a Sacramento pediatrician who introduced a measure eliminating California’s personal beliefs exemption to vaccination requirements for schoolchildren in response to a measles outbreak at Disneyland, plans to go public on Wednesday with a website and social media campaign aimed at fighting off the recall drive, a spokeswoman said. “I won’t be detoured from taking on the tough issues that are important to people in my district simply because there are some that use anti-science rhetoric to ignite division and fear,” Pan said in a text message to Reuters. The successful bill he introduced, which was signed last month by Democratic Governor Jerry Brown, repealed a portion …

  • Teen Reality Queen Kylie Jenner Prances Around In Yet Another Age-Inappropriate Outfit

Posted on Tue Jul 28th, 2015 7:00am PDT       By X17 Staff Kylie Jenner went to the studio yesterday to shoot scenes for Keeping Up With The Kardashians, and the 17-year-old starlet hitched a ride from her 25-year-old boyfriend Tyga. But of course! We’ve known about Kylie and Tyga for quite some time now, but it wasn’t until the last few months that the couple felt comfortable enough to step out together and post Instagrams indicating that they were joined at the hip. While most people have wondered why Kris Jenner would allow her underage daughter to date a twentysomething who has already fathered a child with someone else (and that someone else happens to be Kim Kardashian’s former BFF), Khloe Kardashian sort of explained it all in her recent Complex mag interview. “I think at 16 I was probably f*cking someone that was in their 20s, for sure,” she oh-so-eloquently states. “I wouldn’t say I was …

  • The Foxhole: Thomas Stossel on big pharma without tears

A recent headline in the satirical news outlet The Onion trumpeted: “Doctor Makes Half-Hearted Alternative Suggestions Before Handing Over Drugs.” The article described the action unfolding in the office of a faux “local physician” treating a patient for anxiety: ARLINGTON, VA—Rapidly running through a list of non-pharmaceutical options that might resolve his patient’s anxiety issues, local physician Alan Caplan offered a series of half-hearted alternatives Friday before handing out drugs. “You could consider various lifestyle changes such as eating better and exercising more,” said Caplan, even as he uncapped his pen and reached for his prescription pad. “Some people try meditation to help them relax.” At press time, Caplan had fallen totally silent as he scribbled the dosage instructions for the anti-anxiety medication Cymbalta. What makes The Onion’s article funny – what makes so much of The Onion funny, and what makes for successful comedy in general – is an essential sense of shared understanding, …

  • Fugitive-turned-actor arrested after U.S. Marshals read film write-up

SEATTLE A fugitive bank-robber-turned-actor has been arrested in Washington state after U.S. agents spotted his picture in a newspaper article about a low-budget horror film in which he plays an evil doctor, an official said on Monday. Officers on a U.S. Marshals Service fugitive task force saw Jason Stange’s picture in the Olympian newspaper’s feature last week on horror movie “Marla Mae,” said Jack Williams, chief deputy for the agency’s western district of Washington state. The officers, who had been tracking his disappearance for several months, identified him by the photo and a unique forearm tattoo, Williams said. Marshals tracked him from a filming location to a store in Olympia, where he was arrested without incident on Friday, he said. Stange was sentenced to nearly 10 years in prison and five years supervised release in 2006 after pleading guilty to armed bank robbery, Williams said. He was freed on supervised release in 2014, but had …
