  • Trial to begin in Boy Scout sex abuse civil case; ‘perversion’ files will be allowed in court

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. –  Previously sealed Boy Scouts “perversion” files spanning 16 years could soon be in the public eye as part of a negligence lawsuit set for trial Monday in California that was filed against the organization by a victim of sex abuse. Opening statements were set in Santa Barbara, where a man who is now 20 and was molested by a Boy Scout volunteer in 2007 is seeking punitive damages after claiming the Scouts failed to educate and warn parents and volunteers about the dangers of sex abuse. ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT A judge ruled earlier this month that the man’s attorney, Tim Hale, could introduce more than 30 years’ worth of “perversion” files kept by the Boy Scouts as evidence in the case. The files cleared for use by Santa Barbara Superior Court Judge Donna D. Geck include 16 years of documents — from 1991 to 2007 — that have never been seen before. …

  • Chris Christie joins crowded GOP fight for donors: WSJ

(Reuters) – New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and his supporters have formed a political-action committee ahead of a likely bid for president, adding a third well-known Republican figure to the fight for campaign funds among the party’s core donor class, the Wall Street Journal reported. The launch of the PAC, called Leadership Matters for America, is the clearest sign yet that Christie is running and allows him to assemble a team of staffers and fundraisers who could support a potential run for president, the newspaper said. The PAC signals increased competition for the same set of large-dollar donors who have been taking calls from former Florida Governor Jeb Bush and 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney, both of whom are considering presidential campaigns, the Journal said. (on.wsj.com/1EKLwai) Reuters could not immediately reach Christie for comment outside regular U.S. business hours. Christie, 52, has not declared a bid for the presidency, but has discussed national themes in …

  • Mike Judge on (the lack of) sex in Silicon Valley

Mike Judge is the co-creator of HBO hit show Silicon Valley, a comedy exploring the culture of the tech industry. But long before creating shows like Beavis and Butt-head and King of the Hill, Judge was an engineer in Silicon Valley. He sat down with CNNMoney to talk the absurdities of the exploding tech community. CNNMoney: Mike, what’s funny about Silicon Valley? Judge: We’re at this kind of absurd time in history where people who are 24 are suddenly worth $10 billion in a year and a half. I don’t think there’s ever been a time in history like that. What’s kind of funny is the types of people who are becoming the richest people in the world are so different than the types of people who became the richest people in the world 100 years ago — that Carnegie, Rockefeller type. Now you’ve got the Paul Allens and Mark Zuckerbergs, and it just …

  • Wall, Humphries help Wizards outlast Nuggets in OT

Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) – Kris Humphries’ best game in a Washington uniform couldn’t have come at a better time. Fresh off consecutive losses, Humphries totaled 21 points and 14 rebounds and stepped up in overtime as the Wizards took down the Denver Nuggets, 117-115, on Sunday. “We made plays when it counted,” Humphries said. Humphries scored four early points in the extra session, as Washington opened a 111-105 lead with the first six of OT. Denver countered with five in a row, but John Wall assisted on a Nene layup then drove in for one of his own to keep Washington in front. Darrell Arthur and Arron Afflalo missed 3s on the next trip, and Wall made it a five-point game with two free throws. Adding to the drama, Wilson Chandler hit a trey from the top of the key with 3.8 seconds left to make it two, and Paul Pierce threw a lazy inbounds …

On Monday morning, the main page of its website was replaced by the words “404 – Plane Not Found” and “Hacked by Lizard Squad”. “404 Page not found” is the common error message displayed when a website cannot be loaded. • Skylanders: Trap Team Light and Dark Element Expansions review – fresh components, more fun

Essentially, every Skylanders toy is a physical piece of downloadable content. What makes the Light and Dark Element packs noteworthy, though, is their additions to the base game – in this case, whole new elements, with perhaps the best game-changing comparison being if Pokémon added the fire type after release. Each adds a new playable Trap Master Skylander – the main characters, capable of opening elemental gates in the world – plus a new chapter in the game. The Light pack sees Knight Light battling through Sunscraper Spire, while Dark has Knight Mare saving the Midnight Museum. Each campaign is about an hour long, a decent length for a kids’ audience. In keeping with this year’s enemy-trapping theme, each pack also comes with a matching elemental trap, allowing you to capture and play as new villains Luminous and Nightshade. As toys, Knight Mare enjoys the better sculpt, but both packs cram in a lot of …

  • Snack attack: Bears munch on ants and help plants grow

Tiny ants may seem like an odd food source for black bears, but the protein-packed bugs are a major part of some bears’ diets and a crucial part of the food web that not only affects other bugs, but plants too. In a paper published this week by Ecology Letters, Florida State University researcher Josh Grinath examines the close relationship among bears, ants and rabbitbrush — a golden-flowered shrub that grows in the meadows of Colorado and often serves as shelter for birds. “Bears have an effect on everything else because they have an effect on this one important species — ants,” Grinath said. Scientists have increasingly found that no plant or animal species exist in a vacuum, but tracing and understanding their complex interactions has been more of a challenge. Grinath, who finished his doctorate in December working in the labs of Associate Professors Nora Underwood and Brian Inouye, had spent several years monitoring …

  • Regeneron/Sanofi cholesterol drug gets FDA priority review

(Reuters) – Regeneron Pharmaceuticals on Monday said U.S. health regulators accepted its application to review a potent cholesterol drug on a priority basis, potentially giving it the upper hand in a fierce race with Amgen to bring a new medicine from the promising class to market. Regeneron, which is developing the drug, alirocumab, in partnership with Sanofi, said the target date for a Food and Drug Administration approval decision was July 24, following a six-month review period. That could put the medicine on the U.S. market a month ahead of Amgen’s rival evolocumab. Amgen was first to file its application, but received a standard 10-month review from the FDA, giving it an action date of Aug 27. Regeneron and Sanofi, which were seen as lagging Amgen, employed an unusual strategy to catch up, purchasing a special priority review voucher from BioMarin Pharmaceutical for $67.5 million. The drugs belong to a highly promising new class called …

  • Bradley Cooper’s diet could include 11 Crunchwraps and 17 other foods

More: How to look like a total badass like Bradley Cooper The star revealed to Men’s Health that to bulk up for his role as Chris Kyle in American Sniper, he had to (obviously) work out a ton… in addition to eating an insane 6,000 calories per day. According to the mag, he did it with the help of a trainer and a personal chef by eating five meals every day, along with energy bars and pre- and post-workout protein drinks. “It was a real shock to my body,” he dished. “If it’s pizza and cake, that’s one thing. Putting 6,000 calories a day in your body gets old quick.” But what if it were all pizza and cake? Under the guidance and supervision of a trainer and a personal chef, we’re sure Cooper was eating some seriously healthy stuff. But how much junk food could he down with that 6,000-calorie goal in mind? We …

  • When will Obama stop making false claims about Citizens United?

FILE — Jan. 22, 2015: President Obama speaks during a visit to the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas. (AP Photo/Charlie Riedel) At almost the same time that protesters mad about the Citizens United decision were disrupting the start of the Supreme Court’s session on Wednesday, the White House issued a “Statement from the President” condemning the decision on its fifth anniversary. And once again, President Obama repeated the same false claim about “foreign corporations” that he made in his State of the Union speech back in 2010. This White House seems to believe that if you think up a good political attack theme, stick with it no matter what the truth is. One can certainly debate the effect of Citizens United, which lifted the ban on independent political expenditures (i.e., independent political speech), and whether it has been beneficial to our democratic system. As a former member of the Federal Election Commission that enforces our …

  • Iowa billboard mannequin startles motorists, loses job

(Reuters) – A car dealer is taking down an oversized mannequin that had been placed atop a roadside billboard advertisement in rural Iowa after a number of alarmed drivers called the 911 emergency number to report a man who looked like he was going to jump. “I hate to take it down, but in the interest of public safety I decided to,” Brad Deery, owner of 10 car dealerships in Iowa, told Reuters by telephone on Friday. Deery said the sheriff in Des Moines County asked him to remove the mannequin because drivers were becoming distracted and that some could be tempted to try to climb the sign and take a selfie. The billboard on U.S. Route 61 advertises Deery’s West Burlington dealership. The sign reads “I can see Deery Toyota, Nissan, Mazda from here,” Deery said. The mannequin is posed as though it is looking off at distant car lots. The Hawk Eye, a …
