  • AP Exclusive: Iranian drone first over US carrier since 2014

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates –  An Iranian drone that flew over a U.S. aircraft carrier this month was the first to conduct an overflight of an American carrier since 2014. That’s according to an internal U.S. Navy report on the Jan. 12 incident obtained Wednesday by The Associated Press through a Freedom of Information Act request. That footage shows what the U.S. Navy identifies as the Iranian Shaheed drone that flew over the USS Harry S. Truman, based out of Norfolk, Virginia. “Shaheed” means “martyr” in both Farsi and Arabic. The U.S. Navy report says the last Iranian drone overflight happened in September 2014 and involved the USS George H.W. Bush aircraft carrier. The drone overflight is the latest edgy Persian Gulf naval encounter between Iran and the U.S. after the recent nuclear deal.

  • Daimler recalls 840,000 cars with Takata airbags

Daimler is recalling 840,000 cars and vans to replace Takata airbags that may be defective. The recall affects about 705,000 Mercedes-Benz cars and around 136,000 Daimler vans in the United States, the German automaker said Wednesday. It is the latest is a series of recalls prompted by concerns about Takata (TKTDY)‘s airbags. Millions of cars have been recalled due to the risk of violent airbag explosions. But they were mostly older vehicles — typically model years no later than 2008. U.S. regulators said last week that newer car models were also at risk. Daimler (DDAIF) said the recall was “precautionary” and would cost the company 340 million euros ($382 million). It said its 2015 net profit, reported last week, will be cut to 8.7 billion euros ($9.8 billion) as a result of the charge. • French Foreign Minister Fabius to quit

Image copyright Reuters Image caption Laurent Fabius took part in his last cabinet meeting on Wednesday French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius has said he is standing down. The 69-year-old socialist told reporters that he had attended his final cabinet meeting on Wednesday. Mr Fabius – who was prime minister in the 1980s – was seen as the architect of France’s tough foreign policy under President Francois Hollande. Over the past three years French forces have battled militants in Mali and taken part in air strikes against the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq. Mr Fabius had been a vocal opponent of President Bashar al-Assad of Syria. He has also been widely hailed for helping forge an ambitious agreement to tackle global warming, during a UN summit in Paris last November. There had been reports of Mr Fabius’s imminent departure as part of a wider cabinet reshuffle. He does not say why he was standing …

  • Back to the future of programming: Usborne revives 1980s coding books for children

A generation of children in the 1980s learned about programming from a series of computing books by Usborne Publishing. Now the company has rereleased them in free digital versions. Originally aimed at children learning to program their ZX Spectrum, BBC Micro and Commodore 64 computers, the series included books like Practical Things To Do With a Microcomputer, Machine Code for Beginners, and Write Your Own Adventure Programs. Fifteen of the books have been digitised and made available for download as PDF files from Usborne’s website, with visitors encouraged to download them for personal or educational use, although the books cannot be hosted elsewhere. Computer Spacegames is one of the republished books. The digital books are likely to provoke pangs of nostalgia for anyone who grew up with them, although for modern-day children more used to playing games on a console or tablet than writing them on a computer, they are more likely to be historical …

  • Mysterious menominee crack is unusual geological pop-up feature

Related images(click to enlarge) Seismologists studying a massive crack in the ground that appeared north of Menominee, Michigan in 2010 now think they know what the unusual feature might be. But as they explain in their study published this week in the journal Seismological Research Letters, there are still some mysteries to clear up about the strange geological occurrence in the rural Michigan woods. A team of scientists led by Wayne Pennington of Michigan Technological University says that the crack, which lies along the crest of a two-meter-high ridge that appeared at the same time, is probably a “pop-up” feature. Pop-ups occur in places where shallowly-buried rock layers spring upward after having been weighed down by rock or ice. Pop-ups–sometimes called “A-tents” for their shape–may develop in places where the earth rebounds upward after an overlying glacier shrinks away, or when rock overburden is removed in a quarry. However, the last glaciers retreated from Menominee …

  • Zika, disease of the poor, may not change abortion in Brazil

RECIFE Six months pregnant with her first child, Eritania Maria has a rash and a mild fever, symptoms of the Zika virus linked to brain deformities in newborn children in Brazil. But the 17-year-old is too scared to take a test to confirm if she has Zika. Like other women in the slums of Recife, which squat on stilts over mosquito-ridden marshland in northeast Brazil, Maria has few options if her child develops microcephaly, the condition marked by an abnormally small head and underdeveloped brain that has been linked to Zika. Brazil has amongst the toughest abortion laws in the world and is culturally conservative. Even if she wanted an illegal abortion and could afford one, Maria is too heavily pregnant for a doctor to risk it. So she prefers not to know. “I’m too scared of finding out my baby will be sick,” she told Reuters, her belly poking out from beneath a yellow …

  • Who won in New Hampshire? The ambitions of Michael Bloomberg

Who won in New Hampshire? The ambitions of Michael Bloomberg. The former New York City mayor has hinted that if the 2016 presidential contest came down to a race between extreme candidates like Donald Trump or Bernie Sanders, he might throw his hat in the ring. His calculus is that the mainstream American voter might not be won over by a self-proclaimed Democratic Socialist or by a blustery billionaire who trades in insults and sound bites but who may flame out over the course of a long and arduous campaign. The New Hampshire primary may give Bloomberg a push. Hillary Clinton, the establishment Democratic candidate, was clobbered by Bernie Sanders. Sanders, long the favorite in the Granite State won by some 20 points – considerably more than anticipated. The Vermont senator was expected to chalk up a victory in a neighboring state, but the margin of victory was impressive, and suggested real momentum. Yes, Sanders …

  • Do you want fries with that? Man charged with throwing alligator into fast food restaurant

A Florida fast food restaurant got a customer it wasn’t expecting when a live alligator was tossed through a drive-thru window by a patron. Joshua James, 23, of Jupiter, Florida, had wanted to play a practical joke on a friend working at the Wendy’s restaurant in Royal Palm Beach when he decided to hurl the reptile into the building, his parents told local broadcaster WPTV. “It was a stupid prank,” Linda James said. James faces charges of aggravated assault, and unlawful possession and transportation of an alligator, WPTV said. The incident took place in October. James found the 3-foot alligator on the side of the road and led the reptile into his truck, according to a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission incident report cited by the station. He drove to the Wendy’s restaurant and placed an order, received a drink at the drive-thru window, and then threw the alligator through the opening, it said. …
