  • Fast-moving brush fire forces home evacuations near Los Angeles

(Reuters) – A fast-moving brush fire east of Los Angeles has forced the evacuation of more than 200 homes just hours after it started, fire department officials said on Sunday. The blaze, named the “Highway Fire,” was zero percent contained and had spread over 175 acres in Chino Hills, a suburb about 35 miles east of Los Angeles, according to a statement released by the City of Riverside Fire Department. The fire was first reported in trees around 6 p.m. local time and was expanding rapidly, the statement said. No injuries have been reported. About 245 firefighters were battling the blaze, it said. • Republican hopefuls target middle-class insecurity as economy improves

NASHUA (Reuters) – Facing a recovering economy and a tumbling jobless rate, Republican presidential candidates honing their economic message are trying tap into a lingering sense of insecurity among Americans seven years after the global financial crisis. And some are striking a sympathetic tone with lower-income workers in a way that contrasts with four years ago when Mitt Romney struggled to overcome perceptions that he was largely the candidate of the wealthiest Americans. Then, Republican nominee Romney had the luxury of being able to hammer President Barack Obama with an unemployment rate of more than 8 percent. Now, with the jobless rate at 5.5 percent, the 18 Republican White House hopefuls who gathered this weekend in the key early primary state of New Hampshire faced the challenge of arguing the country needs new economic stewardship even as the worst of the downtown has passed. Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush said that simply blasting Obama’s economic …

  • Greece running out of time to avoid collapse

Markets are beginning to freak out over Greece, again. Three months after Athens promised to deliver a program of reforms in return for more bailout cash, little progress has been made and the risk of default is rising. The Greek government insists it is still optimistic about striking a deal with its European creditors soon, but time is running out with hefty payments looming. Greece needs about 1.7 billion euros to pay pensions and wages by the end of April, and one billion for payments to the International Monetary Fund by May 12. There is still 7.2 billion euros left in the 240 billion euro Greek bailout fund — a lifeline the country needs to avoid “Grexit,” or crashing out of the euro. But the money will only be released if Greece’s creditors are happy with its plans for economic reforms — and there are still big differences over the labor market, pensions, sales tax …

  • Hearing aids may slow cognitive decline tied to hearing loss

(Reuters Health) – – Hearing aids may lessen the forgetfulness and mental confusion tied to moderate to severe hearing loss, suggests a new study. “This study is important because it focuses on a risk factor that is amenable to intervention in later life and could potentially postpone cognitive decline,” said Jennifer Deal, the study’s lead author from the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. She and her colleagues write in the American Journal of Epidemiology that previous studies found a link to an increased risk between hearing loss and cognition problems. Though the underlying cause is still unknown, researchers speculate the two conditions may be linked through inflammation, social isolation or a number of other conditions. Few studies have focused on whether wearing hearing aids lessen the risk of future cognitive problems, they write. For the new study, they used data from a past study to see if wearing hearing …

  • Forget Cuba or health care reform, Obama’s real legacy is Middle East nukes

April 17, 2015: President Obama reaches to shake hands with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi in the Oval Office. (AP) President Obama recently sat down for a long, wide-ranging interview with Thomas Friedman, the New York Times’ premier columnist and multiple Pulitzer Prize winner. It was supposed to be an elevated discussion between two intellectuals about the weighty foreign policy issues not just of the day, but of the modern era. Obama kept referring to broad, sweeping words of wisdom – the deal with Iran is a “once in a lifetime” chance. He hinted at a similar deal with Cuba. And he announced, “You asked about an Obama doctrine. The doctrine is: We will engage, but we preserve all our capabilities.” ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT Sadly, we have seen that the alternative to American leadership isn’t world peace, but rising regional hegemony – or even worse, chaos. China, Russia, Iran and the Islamic State don’t want to play …

  • Former Washington state governor ejects man from car

SEATTLE (Reuters) – Former Washington state Governor Chris Gregoire used fast thinking and driving to stop a stranger from climbing into her car in a store parking lot, Olympia police said on Thursday. Gregoire, who was governor from 2005 to 2013, packed her purchases into the car’s trunk in a Lowe’s home improvement lot, the police said. As she did she saw a man watching her. Police said that once she was inside the car, the man opened the passenger door and started climbing in just as she began backing out of the space. She hit the gas pedal, the man fell to the ground and the door slammed shut, police said. The man, identified as 47-year-old Mark Snodderly, was not injured. Police said he then caused a disturbance in the store, adding that he was cited for disorderly conduct and taken to a hospital for evaluation. (This story has been refiled to fix spelling …
