  • Obama condemns latest beheading in Syria

President Barack Obama(AP Photo/Evan Vucci) President Barack Obama on Saturday condemned as a “barbaric murder” the slaying of British aid worker David Haines by Islamic State extremists. Haines was abducted last year in Syria, and extremists released a video on Saturday showing his beheading. In a statement issued Saturday night, Obama said the hearts of Americans go out to Haines’ family and the people of the United Kingdom. “The United States stands shoulder to shoulder tonight with our close friend and ally in grief and resolve,” Obama said. “We will work with the United Kingdom and a broad coalition of nations from the region and around the world to bring the perpetrators of this outrageous act to justice, and to degrade and destroy this threat to the people of our countries, the region and the world,” he said. • GM compensation czar to unveil initial death toll from ignition flaw

Attorney Ken Feinberg will announce Monday how many deaths and injuries he has so far tied to General Motors’ ignition switch flaw, his office said Sunday. GM (GM) has publicly linked 13 deaths and 54 accidents to the fault, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have said they believe the numbers to be larger. The company only counted head-on crashes where the frontal airbag did not properly deploy and victims were in the vehicles’ front seats. The families of those who died in the vehicles are eligible to apply for $1 million in compensation from the fund, plus an estimate of the victim’s future earning potential. Those families must agree to not sue GM. Its 2009 bankruptcy provided a liability shield from many lawsuits, and a federal judge is deciding how that will apply to ignition switch claims. Feinberg was hired by General Motors to oversee the fund but has stressed his independence …

  • No pain for Furyk after yet another runner-up spot

ATLANTA (Reuters) – Jim Furyk has not tasted victory on the PGA Tour for four frustrating years but he had very little to complain about after recording his fourth runner-up spot of the season at the Tour Championship on Sunday. The veteran American went into the final round at East Lake Golf Club two strokes off the pace and twice moved into a tie for the lead before finishing in a share of second place with world number one Rory McIlroy. A poor swing with his approach at the par-four 17th led to the second of his three bogeys on the day and it was the one that really stung. “I got trapped in between clubs a little bit on 17,” Furyk told reporters after firing a one-under-par 69 in the season-ending event to post an eight-under total of 272, finishing three strokes off the pace. “A six-iron was a little too much. I don’t …

  • Isis doesn’t deserve to be called Islamic, Australian imams say

Australian imams have called for the term “Islamic” not to be used when referring to the Islamic State (Isis) group, saying it serves only to give credibility to the group’s claims of religious authority. There was nothing Islamic about its murderous actions, the Australian National Imams Council said, and the phrase “Islamic State” referred to an era when Muslims, Christians and Jews lived together harmoniously. But the militants had misappropriated the terminology for their own political and violent goals. “Since the Isis group was established we have been very clear about denouncing their lies and betrayal of our faith,” the grand mufti of Australia, Ibrahim Abu Mohammad, said in a statement on Monday. “These criminals are committing crimes against humanity and sins against God. Forced eviction, threats of execution and burning of places of worship including churches have no place in any faith.” But the imams council does not support the federal government’s decision to …

  • New species of electrons can lead to better computing

In a research paper published this week in Science, the collaboration led by MIT’s theory professor Leonid Levitov and Manchester’s Nobel laureate Sir Andre Geim report a material in which electrons move at a controllable angle to applied fields, similar to sailboats driven diagonally to the wind. The material is graphene — one atom-thick chicken wire made from carbon — but with a difference. It is transformed to a new so-called superlattice state by placing it on top of boron nitride, also known as `white graphite’, and then aligning the crystal lattices of the two materials. In contrast to metallic graphene, a graphene superlattice behaves as a semiconductor. In original graphene, charge carriers behave like massless neutrinos moving at the speed of light and having the electron charge. Although an excellent conductor, graphene does not allow for easy switching on and off of current, which is at the heart of what a transistor does. Electrons …

  • Abbott dissolving stent has lower angina rate vs metal stent: study

(Reuters) – Abbott’s Absorb dissolving heart stent proved as safe and effective one year after being placed in a diseased artery as the company’s market-leading Xience drug coated metal stent with a significantly lower rate of chest pain, according to data presented at a medical meeting on Sunday. Absorb works in the same way as traditional heart stents, propping open arteries that have been cleared of blockages to restore normal blood flow. But unlike metal stents that remain permanently in place, Absorb softens over several months and dissolves in two to three years, allowing the treated artery to regain more normal flexibility to expand and contract. In the 501-patient study called Absorb II – the first randomized head-to-head trial using Absorb – the stent technology was found to be as good as, or non-inferior to, Xience, researchers said. The most notable difference observed after one year in the European study was the rate of angina, …

  • The way of serenity: Saying yes to sacred encounters

Columbia University (Reuters) He was so right, and I wish I could go back in time to tell him how wrong I was. It was a bitter cold night in Harlem when I met this gentleman, a man whose name I am embarrassed to say I don’t remember.  ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT Coming up from the subway that evening, I was in no mood for conversation. It couldn’t have been past 5pm but already it was mostly dark, one of those short days of the year that feel so very long. The world is a very messy place right now. But the great news is that amidst this chaos, no matter who we are or what people are doing around us, sacred moments still happen. The day at the office had been mostly disappointing. I wanted to get home, slump into the armchair, and zone out on ESPN.  But I couldn’t avoid him. “Father, I need to talk …
