Women are breaking through the ‘concrete ceiling’
We’ve all heard about the glass ceiling, but it looks the concrete one might be harder to crack.
According to the National Women’s Law Center, in 2010 women held a tiny percentage — 2.6 — of the U.S.’s 8.4 million construction jobs, the same percentage they held in 1983. The NWLC faults “barriers such as gender stereotypes, sexual harassment, a lack of awareness about opportunities in construction, and insufficient instruction.”
But while women may not be gaining ground in trades like carpen [...]

Children Who Have CT Scans May Face Higher Cancer Risk
WEDNESDAY, May 22 (HealthDay News) — Children and teens exposed to radiation during CT scans are 24 percent more likely to develop cancer, according to a large, long-term study.
The risks, however, are still low: Among a group of 10,000 young people who each had one CT scan, only about six extra cancers would be expected to occur within 10 years, according to researchers from Australia and Europe.
The researchers said doctors should carefully weight the risks to patients when making decisions about [...]

Encouraging signs for bee biodiversity
Declines in the biodiversity of pollinating insects and wild plants have slowed in recent years, according to a new study. Researchers led by the University of Leeds and the Naturalis Biodiversity Centre in the Netherlands found evidence of dramatic reductions in the diversity of species in Britain, Belgium and the Netherlands between the 1950s and 1980s.
But the picture brightened markedly after 1990, with a slowdown in local and national biodiversity losses among bees, hoverflies and wild plants.

A man with ties to the Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev was shot and killed by an FBI agent while being questioned in Florida, law enforcement officials said on Wednesday.
The man who was shot, Ibragim Todashev, 27, was not suspected of having played any role in the bombing that killed three people and injured scores more in April, they said.
Instead, law enforcement officials said Todashev was being questioned as part of the FBI’s effort to find and talk to anyone who had any contact with Tsarnaev, the older bombing susp [...]
