  • ‘Gang threat’ to Baltimore police

Police stand behind masks after a march to City Hall on Saturday night Baltimore police say they have received “credible information” that members of various – sometimes rival – gangs are partnering to “take-out” officers. The information was released as people gathered to attend the funeral service for Freddie Gray. Gray, 25, died 19 April after an encounter with police a week earlier during which he sustained serious and unexplained spinal injuries. His death sparked daily protests about police force against African Americans. On Saturday the protests turned violent, with some elements confronting police officers and smashing cars. A statement released by police said that its Criminal Intelligence Unit learned “that members of various gangs including the Black Guerrilla Family, Bloods, and Crips have entered into a partnership” to target officers. Gloria Darden hug’s her son’s body before his funeral Meanwhile, around 2,500 people are reported to have packed into the New Shiloh Baptist Church …

  • Brooklyn U.S. Attorney’s office names acting replacement for Lynch

NEW YORK (Reuters) – The Brooklyn U.S. Attorney’s office said on Monday Kelly Currie will temporarily replace Loretta Lynch, who was sworn in as attorney general. Currie, who returned to the office in November to become Lynch’s second-in-command, will be the acting U.S. Attorney for Eastern District of New York. Lynch was officially sworn in Monday as attorney general, replacing Eric Holder. The 170-lawyer U.S. Attorney’s office oversees cases in the New York boroughs of Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island, as well as in Long Island. The office has recently pursued defendants ranging from former U.S. Representative Michael Grimm, who pleaded guilty in December to a tax charge, to Abid Naseer, a Pakistani man convicted in March of conspiring with al Qaeda to bomb U.S. and European targets. The office is also pursuing a civil rights investigation into the July 2014 death of Eric Garner, an unarmed black man whose death after a chokehold by …

  • The angels of revenge porn

Imagine staying up all night looking for naked pictures of yourself online. Not because you’re a porn star, but because a crazed ex has posted images you once shared in confidence all over the Internet. Revenge porn, or non-consensual pornography, is a growing form of cyber-bullying. The photos typically end up on sites devoted to shaming women. But the law protecting victims of revenge porn is lagging behind, leaving many women with few tools to fight back. Victims do have one surprising option: Corporate law firm KL Gates. KL Gates takes on revenge porn cases as part of a pro bono initiative called the Cyber Civil Rights Legal Project. And the clients are pouring in. “[The demand] has been oddly very large for this,” said attorney Elisa D’Amico, who co-founded the project last fall. “We’ve talked to over 200 victims from all across the United States, the U.K., Sweden, Latvia, Tunisia … the Philippines.” It …

  • Tennessee Titans 2015 Draft Preview

(SportsNetwork.com) – There is a linchpin pick where every draft pivots and that selection is going to be very early in the 2015 version, Tennessee’s spot at No. 2 overall. If things fall as expected and Tampa Bay selects Florida State QB Jameis Winston with the No. 1 overall pick, the Titans have a decision to make, either draft Marcus Mariota or trade out to an organization that wants the Oregon Heisman Trophy winner. For weeks the thought was that Tennessee wanted out of the slot because they need multiple assets in order to get better and Mariota seems nothing like a Ken Whisenhunt-type quarterback. The Titans have done a brilliant job dispelling that notion, however, and an early draft-week column by Peter King of Sports Illustrated claimed Tennessee will be “comfortable” taking Mariota “unless they trade the pick.” Think about that thesis, though. If the Titans really liked Mariota that much, the solution is …

  • ‘Most Nepal troops’ in quake effort

Nine out of 10 Nepalese troops are said to be involved in search and rescue operations, as the country pleads for more foreign aid to deal with a massive earthquake that killed 4,000 people. Almost the entire army and police has joined the quake effort, officials say. China, India, the UK and US are among those sending aid from abroad. Nepal says it needs everything from blankets and helicopters to doctors and drivers. Some 200 climbers stranded by the quake on Mount Everest are being rescued. About 60 of the climbers had been brought to safety by helicopters on Monday, according to Tulsi Gautam, the chief of Nepal’s tourism agency. He told the BBC that helicopters were only ferrying two people at a time because of the risk of flying at such a high altitude. The climbers had been unable to leave the mountain because of avalanches triggered by the earth tremors. The quake is …

  • Apple Pay to accept Discover cards this fall

Apple Pay will work with all four major credit cards in the US, as of this fall. James Martin/CNET Discover credit card holders will be able to tap into Apple Pay later this year. Starting this fall, Apple Pay users in the US will be able to add their Discover cards to Apple’s mobile payments system to buy items at supported stores and other sellers, Discover announced Monday. Apple Pay already accepts Visa, MasterCard and American Express, so Apple will have a lock on all four major credit cards in the US. A spokesman for Discover told CNET that he couldn’t be any more specific on timing beyond this fall but added that the company is starting the task of integrating Apple Pay now. Unveiled in October, Apple Pay enables owners of the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and Apple Watch to pay for items on the go via a wireless technology known as NFC …

  • Kathmandu earthquake nightmare not yet over

The devastating magnitude 7.8 earthquake that rocked Nepal on Saturday could be repeated within the next decade or two, geologists say. The enormous quake, which struck an area in central Nepal between the capital Kathmandu and the city of Pokhara, has had a far-reaching impact. Over 3000 people are already known to have lost their lives, with victims as far afield as Bangladesh, India, Tibet, and Mount Everest where avalanches were triggered. And the possibility of aftershocks, in addition to the risk of landslides on slopes made unstable by the quake, mean the danger is far from passed. Last year, reporting for Cosmos, I travelled to Nepal to meet with the geologists working on the ground there trying to identify where the next big earthquake would strike. They feared that a major quake was imminent [see Kathmandu’s earthquake nightmare]. With tragically prescient timing, members of that team working in the region last month identified a …

  • More American doctors favor Democrats

(Reuters Health) – – American physicians remained more likely to donate to Democrats in the 2014 midterm elections even as voters passed control of Congress to the Republican party, a study finds. While the percentage of doctors contributing to Republicans has for the most part been declining since the mid-1990s, 55 percent of physician donors backed Democrats in the last election cycle, just as they did in 2012, according to the study published in JAMA Internal Medicine. “There is this traditional notion out there that if you are a physician, you are a Republican, and we’re now seeing that the profession as a whole is on the Democratic side,” said senior study author Dr. David Rothman, a researcher at Columbia University’s Center on Medicine as a Profession. “We believe it’s going to be a long term trend.” The shift in political party allegiance among physicians is probably a byproduct of changes in how medicine is …

  • Nepal: How long will we care?

As I write, the sun is just beginning to rise again over a leveled landscape in Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, revealing scores of huddled bodies. Some are dead, and others are not, but all of their lives have been destroyed.  It is a scene of horror, and it is unlike anything I have personally witnessed in the 19 years I have been working in the country. We have taken care of thousands of impoverished children, drilled dozens of wells, and built hundreds of church buildings to serve and show love to people of our faith and of other faiths. ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT In a few weeks, when Nepal is out of the headlines, will we remember the millions who are homeless, without access to clean water, basic health care, or a place to send their children to school?     A colleague there wrote to tell me of two churches, with congregations inside, that were meeting during the earthquake, …

  • Scientist Hawking tells upset fans Malik may be in parallel One Direction

(Reuters) – What is the cosmological effect of singer Zayn Malik leaving the best-selling boy band One Direction and consequently disappointing millions of teenage girls around the world? The advice of British cosmologist Stephen Hawking to heartbroken fans is to follow theoretical physics, because Malik may well still be a member of the pop group in another universe. The physicist took a break from speaking about his work as one of the world’s leading scientists to answer the question from one upset fan during a talk at Sydney Opera House at the weekend. “Finally a question about something important,” Hawking, who appeared via hologram, said to loud laughs from the audience. “My advice to any heartbroken young girl is to pay attention to the study of theoretical physics because, one day, there may well be proof of multiple universes. “It would not be beyond the realms of possibility that somewhere outside of our own universe …
