  • 1 dead after small plane crashes into California driveway

SANTEE, Calif. –  A small plane grazed the roof of a Southern California home and crashed in a driveway Thursday, killing one person and critically injuring another, authorities said. Both victims were aboard the single-engine plane that went down in a residential cul-de-sac in Santee, Fire Chief Richard Mattick said. Nobody on the ground was hurt. The survivor was breathing when extricated from the wreckage and rushed to a hospital, according to San Diego County sheriff’s Lt. Jim Bolwerk. The other person died at the crash site. The aircraft glanced off the roof of a home in the small suburban city about 15 miles northeast of downtown San Diego. It caused damage to some tiles before striking two vehicles and crashing into the driveway, Mattick said. The plane flipped and landed upside down but caused no explosions or fire, said Mattick, who was at the scene. The sheriff’s office had said earlier that there was …

  • Minnesota’s John Kline Will Not Seek Eighth Term

By Simone Pathé and Emily Cahn Posted at 11:53 a.m. today 0 Tweet Kline will not seek re-election. (Tom Williams/CQ Roll Call file photo) Updated 12:10 p.m.| Seven-term Minnesota GOP Rep. John Kline announced Thursday he will not run for re-election, putting Republicans in a tough spot to hold the southeastern Minnesota district in a presidential year. “It has been and will continue to be a privilege serving the men and women of Minnesota’s 2nd District for the next 16 months,” he said in a statement Thursday morning. Kline was first elected in 2002 and won re-election last November by 17 points. But his seat has been a perennial Democratic target since President Barack Obama narrowly carried the district twice. His retirement announcement is prompting The Rothenberg Gonzales Political Report/Roll Call to move the race from Safe Republican to Tossup. Adding to Republican challenges this cycle is that there’s no gubernatorial or Senate race in Minnesota. And as the state …

  • Tom Brady’s big win sends ticket prices spiraling up

Tom Brady’s four-game suspension went away Thursday morning when a federal judge ruled in his favor. And so did cheap tickets to the Patriots’ first home games. The median price for tickets already sold on StubHub for the team’s season opener Sept. 10 against the Pittsburgh Steelers is $386.87, according to data made available to ticket sellers on the site. But the median price of tickets still listed for sale jumped to $492.75 within an hour of the court decision. The median price of tickets already sold for the Sept. 27 game versus the Jacksonville Jaguars had been $242.43, while the listing price of those still available for sale was also about $100 higher at $349.23. The NFL had suspended Brady for the first four games of the season for his role in the “deflategate” scandal in last year’s playoffs. But Judge Richard Berman ruled for Brady and the players’ union Thursday morning and dismissed …

  • Report: Greg Hardy may appeal his four-game suspension

Judge Richard Berman’s ruling eliminated New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady’s four-game suspension on Thursday. Now, Dallas Cowboys defensive end Greg Hardy is readily exploring his options. According to ESPN’s Ed Werder, Hardy — who was suspended four games for his role in a domestic violence incident — will discuss with the players’ union about whether to appeal his case in federal court. The league initially suspended Hardy for 10 games before reducing the penalty to four, but the former Carolina Panthers standout had the option to appeal in federal court. However, the ruling in Brady’s case — which had no precedent — cannot be directly compared to Hardy’s situation, since he’s dealing with a violation of the NFL’s personal conduct policy. If Hardy elects to pursue an appeal, the suspension would be temporarily delayed. With that being said, due to the precedent in domestic violence cases, it’s highly unlikely a judge would eliminate Hardy’s …

  • Trump ‘not to run as independent’

Image copyright Reuters Image caption Donald Trump is currently the frontrunner in the Republican race US presidential hopeful Donald Trump has agreed not to run as an independent candidate if he loses the Republican nomination for the 2016 elections. “I will be totally pledging my allegiance to the Republican party and the conservative principles for which it stands,” he said on Thursday. He had earlier refused to rule it out. The billionaire business mogul, who has been soaring in the polls, has come under pressure in recent weeks from the Republican Party to sign the pledge. His announcement on Thursday will be seen as a victory for the party, who may have seen a split in its support had Donald Trump pressed ahead as an independent candidate. He said he had received nothing for signing the loyalty pledge, aside from the assurance that he would be treated fairly in the race. During the Republican presidential …

  • AOL’s Millennial Media deal underlines rise in automated ad buying

AOL’s acquisition of mobile ad firm Millennial Media underlines the rapid rise of programmatic advertising, as new research shows that automated buying will grow massively this year and account for more than half of the UK’s £3bn digital display market. AOL, which was acquired by telecoms giant Verizon for $4.4bn in May, has paid $238m for the publicly listed Millennial Media. For AOL, which boosted its programmatic ad technology buying video platform adap.TV for $405m in 2013, the deal marks a major move into computerised ad buying on mobile devices. Millennial Media operates a mobile ad network with more than 65,000 apps, and in-app ads have the added benefit of avoiding content-blocking software. AOL said that the deal means it now has access to about 1 billion global active unique users, scale critical in its battle against rivals including Facebook and Google. Bob Lord, president of AOL, said: “AOL is well positioned as consumers spend …

  • Brazilian wasp venom kills cancer cells by opening them up

Related images(click to enlarge) The social wasp Polybia paulista protects itself against predators by producing venom known to contain a powerful cancer-fighting ingredient. A Biophysical Journal study published September 1 reveals exactly how the venom’s toxin–called MP1 (Polybia-MP1)–selectively kills cancer cells without harming normal cells. MP1 interacts with lipids that are abnormally distributed on the surface of cancer cells, creating gaping holes that allow molecules crucial for cell function to leak out. “Cancer therapies that attack the lipid composition of the cell membrane would be an entirely new class of anticancer drugs,” says co-senior study author Paul Beales, of the University of Leeds in the UK. “This could be useful in developing new combination therapies, where multiple drugs are used simultaneously to treat a cancer by attacking different parts of the cancer cells at the same time.” MP1 acts against microbial pathogens by disrupting the bacterial cell membrane. Serendipitously, the antimicrobial peptide shows promise for …

  • ‘Mixed depression,’ agitation may signal suicide risk

(Reuters Health) – Certain behavior patterns often precede suicide attempts by people with major depression, suggesting signs that doctors can and should watch out for, a large study suggests. The hallmarks of suicide risk may include risky behavior, agitated behavior, impulsivity and the presence of “depressive mixed states” that include both depression and mania symptoms, the investigators say. “The results of this study are important because they may guide clinicians (from GPs to specialists) to which symptoms to pay special attention to and to search for in any depressed patient,” Dr. Dina Popovic, psychiatrist at the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, Spain, told Reuters Health by email. “Due to the large number of patients in this study, we were able to identify specific symptoms which mostly increase the risk to attempt suicide,” said Popovic, who led the study. Results of the BRIDGE-II-MIX study were released August 30 at the 28th European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP) Congress …

  • Immigration: Anchor babies and the dangers of ‘nativism’

The tone of the debate over the nation’s immigration laws has taken an ugly turn as some office-seekers offer solutions to problems that don’t exist.             The natural rights of all persons consist of areas of human behavior for which we do not need and will not accept the need for a government permission slip.             We all expect that the government will leave us alone when we think, speak, publish, worship, defend ourselves, enter our homes, choose our mates or travel. The list of natural rights is endless.             We expect this not because we are Americans, but because we are persons and these rights are integral to our nature. We expect this in America because the Constitution was written to restrain the government from interfering with natural rights.             When these first principles are violated to advance a political cause or to quell public fear, those whose rights are violated because of an …

  • Spanish pensioner offers cash to find job for ‘desperate’ son

MADRID A Spanish pensioner has placed a newspaper advertisement offering 5,000 euros ($5,600) to any employer who would hire his 39-year-old son, a “desperate” unemployed father of one. “Pensioner offers 5,000 euros to company who hires his unemployed son, qualified, responsible and hard-working with good references, pay negotiable according to contract, absolute discretion,” the advertisement in El Heraldo de Aragon newspaper said. Concerns about Spanish unemployment, the second-highest in Europe at 22.4 percent, are at the center of the campaign for a general election to be held in December. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, ahead in polls but expected to fall short of a majority, is seeking to overcome scepticism that an economic recovery is truly filtering down. The pensioner, a retired lawyer, told the newspaper he could not watch his son suffer without doing anything. “The advert might look undignified, but I lost my sense of shame a long time ago,” said the pensioner, who …
