  • More than 2,000 homes threatened by wildfire near Sacramento

September 17, 2014: Firefighters battle the flames from the King fire near Fresh Pond, Calif. The blaze that started Sunday has consumed more than 18,000 acres and is only 5 percent contained. (AP Photo/Rich Pedroncelli) Fire officials in northern California said Wednesday that 2,000 homes and 1,500 smaller structures were threatened by a blaze burning out of control east of Sacramento.  The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said that 2,500 firefighters were taking on the wildfire that has burned nearly 44 square miles of trees and brush and is just 5 percent contained.  ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT “It’s been an explosive couple of days,” CalFire spokesman Daniel Berlant told the Associated Press. Most of the threatened homes are located in Pollock Pines, approximately 50 miles east of California’s capital.  “We are faced with a large and dangerous fire,” Laurence Crabtree, a U.S. Forest Service supervisor for the Eldorado National Forest, told the Sacramento Bee. “We …

  • California governor signs ridesharing insurance legislation

(Reuters) – California Governor Jerry Brown signed new insurance requirements on ridesharing companies into law on Wednesday, but the regulations come at a far lower cost to the industry than previously written into the bill, officials said. Companies such as Lyft, Sidecar and UberX, which is a part of black-car service Uber, allow passengers to summon paid rides using apps on their smartphones and have gained in popularity in dozens of U.S. cities over the past few years. But they face opposition from taxi companies that argue the upstarts do not face the same stringent regulations as do traditional cabs, and insurance companies want ridesharing drivers to carry more expensive insurance policies. The law requires ridesharing companies’ insurance to cover drivers from the moment they turn on their app, not just from when they accept a ride on their app, according to information from the office of California Assemblywoman Susan Bonilla, who championed the bill. …

  • TMZ tackles TV with new sports show

By leading the way with coverage of the Donald Sterling and Ray Rice scandals, TMZ has bolstered its sports brand. And now it’s coming to television. The cable channel Reelz announced Wednesday that it has picked up “TMZ Hollywood Sports” for the channel’s prime time lineup. The weekday sports show will focus on the celebrity status of athletes rather than the games they play. “This is sports without scores … and the highlights are what happen when athletes and celebrity culture collide off the field,” Reelz said in a press release. “Whether they’re partying with the stars, breaking into TV and movie roles, or behaving badly, ‘TMZ Hollywood Sports’ will be there.” The timing of the new show — set to debut Sept. 29 — is advantageous for both sides, since TMZ has been getting attention for the video it exclusively obtained of Rice striking his now-wife in an elevator. Reelz could use some …

Minneapolis, MN (SportsNetwork.com) – Brian Dozier had two hits and two RBI, including the go-ahead triple as the Minnesota Twins beat the Detroit Tigers 8-4 on Wednesday night. The Twins won the last two games in the three-game series to put a dent in Detroit’s division title hopes. The Tigers’ lead for first place in the AL Central was trimmed to a half-game over the Royals with a key three-game series between the division foes on tap this weekend in Kansas City. The Royals beat the White Sox 6-2 on Wednesday. Danny Santana had three hits, three runs scored and two RBI for the Twins and Joe Mauer added two hits and two runs knocked in. Kyle Gibson (12-11) pitched six innings for the win — Minnesota’s fourth in its last 13 games. The right-hander gave up four runs, seven hits and three walks for his first victory in six starts. • Ukraine president in key US visit

18 September 2014 Last updated at 04:23 Petro Poroshenko (left) and Barack Obama met at a Nato summit earlier this month Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko is to begin a key visit to the US to seek further support to tackle what he describes as Russian aggression. Mr Poroshenko will hold talks with US President Barack Obama before addressing a joint session of Congress. Mr Poroshenko is flying to the US from Canada, where he told MPs Ukraine had bid “the last farewell” to the USSR after signing an EU association deal. Ukraine accuses Russia of supporting rebels in its east. Moscow denies this. More than 3,000 people have died in fighting between Ukrainian government forces and pro-Russian rebels in the eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions since April. A fragile ceasefire agreed on 5 September is holding, despite accusations of shelling by both sides. On Tuesday, Ukraine’s MPs approved a bill granting self-rule to parts of …

  • iOS 8 also comes with bucket of security fixes

Apple published a long list of iOS 8 security changes on Wednesday as the operating system update got delivered to users. While Apple credited many independent security experts, it continued to not differentiate bugs by severity and buried the fix to a major vulnerability. The most notable fix of the Apple Knowledge Base list — more than 53 vulnerabilities long — was hidden at the bottom of the list separated from the other vulnerabilities as a “note” that read, “iOS 8 contains changes to some diagnostic capabilities.” The note linked to another new Knowledge Base article, which detailed changes to the diagnostic tools in iOS 8. Previously, the tools had allowed people with unauthorized access to iOS’s encryption keys to connect wirelessly to the iPhone or iPad and extract sensitive information including text messages and pictures — without having to unlock the device. The “backdoor” was revealed at the Hope-X conference in July by independent …

  • U.S. to begin Ebola hospital equipment lift to Liberia

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The first planeload of hospital equipment in the U.S. military’s battle against West Africa’s deadly Ebola outbreak will arrive in Liberia on Friday, a senior administration official said on Wednesday. The United States hopes its expanded effort to contain the spread of the virus will help rally other countries in ramping up the global response to the epidemic, U.S. aid official Nancy Lindborg told a U.S. House of Representatives committee. The plane is the first of 13 air shipments headed for Monrovia, carrying equipment for a 25-bed hospital to be built in Liberia’s capital. The facility will be staffed by 65 Americans who will treat healthcare workers infected while fighting the worst outbreak of the virus on record, according to Lindborg. The epidemic has killed nearly 2,500 people, about half those infected. Army Major General Darryl Williams, who is leading the military operation, arrived in Liberia on Tuesday to sketch out plans …

  • Debra Messing: I will forever be Grace Adler

Debra Messing on beauty, work and being a mom  “I will forever be Grace Adler,” Messing told Matt Lauer Wednesday morning. “I am thrilled and proud that that is the case.” Besides just being known as the wacky redhead, Messing said she is also proud of what the show accomplished — for gay rights and human rights. According to Us Weekly, she explained, “For us to have had that kind of impact, and for that character to be so beloved, it’s a wonderful thing.” She then opened up about her new role, saying, “Hopefully, fans of Grace will watch this and they’ll enjoy it as well.” Messing also said she finds her latest character similar to Adler more and more. “They both eat inappropriately,” she said, and they “both sing as if nobody’s watching,” she joked. Since Smash ended, Messing was trying to decide whether she should return to TV. But she will be back …

  • Why Andrew Tahmooressi, Marine held in Mexico, will be home soon

I strongly believe that within the next four weeks U.S. Marine Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi will be released from El Hongo Federal Prison in Mexico and able to walk on American soil once again. Young lawyers are taught to manage expectations. “Under-promise and over-deliver” is the rule – but there are exceptions. When the evidence is coming out so strongly in his favor, an experienced lawyer can take the gamble and say what he really thinks. ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT I have been providing legal and spiritual support to Andrew and his mom, Jill, since May. I assisted Jill in hiring Fernando Benitez, Andrew’s Mexican lawyer, and have worked closely with him during the last three court hearings. No purveyor of justice could honestly believe that Andrew posed a threat to Mexican authority or its people. Andrew had no intention of entering Mexico with firearms, and there is proof. The video evidence taken by Mexican customs officials at …

  • Florida city reverses ban on saggy pants that threatened jail time

ORLANDO Fla. (Reuters) – Saggy pants are a fashion choice and not a police concern, a Florida city has decided, rescinding a two-month-old ban that threatened jail time for styles intentionally exposing underwear or buttocks. Responding to criticism of a law seen as targeting young black males, the Ocala city council voted 4-1 on Tuesday to rescind the ban it had approved in July. “Putting someone in jail for 60 days and fining them $500 for wearing their pants two inches below their natural waistline, wherever that is, that’s not smart justice,” said Kent Guinn, mayor of Ocala, which is 80 miles northwest of Orlando in central Florida. No one was fined or jailed for wearing saggy pants in Ocala, which had joined several U.S. cities prohibiting or campaigning against what many defend as a fashion statement. The saggy pants style has been embraced by popular music culture and spread among young people. The Ocala …
