  • Fire at Washington state Planned Parenthood ruled arson

A fire that badly damaged a Planned Parenthood building in Washington state early on Friday was caused by arson, local officials said. The blaze was set around 3:30 a.m. local time and caused extensive damage to the front of the structure in Pullman, the Pullman Fire Department said in a news release. No one was injured in the fire. Last month, thousands of protesters rallied outside Planned Parenthood locations across the country calling for the federal government to end funding for the health organization. Demonstrators were mobilized to dozens of locations, including Pullman, after an anti-abortion group released videos purporting to show Planned Parenthood officials negotiating prices for aborted fetal tissue. Fire officials in Pullman, a city of about 30,000 people close to Washington’s border with Idaho, have not speculated on a motive for the arson and said the investigation was ongoing. • Rubio, on stump in Puerto Rico, says island needs new leadership

SAN JUAN Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio told residents of Puerto Rico on Friday the island needed new political leadership as it grapples with its fiscal crisis, but protection under bankruptcy laws would not solve the U.S. territory’s problems. “I believe the Puerto Rico government has the ability to solve its own issues,” Rubio, a Cuban-American, told a crowd in San Juan, speaking in Spanish. “What you need is new political leadership that has the courage and willingness to do the right and needed reforms.” Puerto Rico Governor Alejandro Garcia Padilla said in June the U.S. territory could not afford to pay its debts, totaling $72 billion, and called for the commonwealth to be allowed to restructure its debts under the U.S. bankruptcy code. Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, also in San Juan on Friday, addressed a panel on healthcare, telling the audience, “One of the challenges we face is the unfortunate legacy of inconsistent, …

  • Egyptian billionaire offers to buy island for refugees

An Egyptian billionaire is offering to buy an island for people fleeing to Europe from war-torn countries in the Middle East and Africa. Naguib Sawiris, one of the region’s wealthiest men, said “there is no limit” on what he is willing to spend to buy an island from Italy or Greece — where thousands have been arriving — to provide the refugees with a new home. “Greece or Italy, sell me an island,” Sawiris tweeted. He even suggested a name for the new country: “Hope.” He said there are dozens of empty islands off of Greece and Italy that could handle 100,000 to 200,000 people. And he rejected a suggestion that it was a “ridiculous” idea. “It’s a very simple solution,” he told CNN Friday. “They sell the island to me and I’ll make a temporary shelter for these people. I’ll make a small port or marina for the boats to land there. I’ll employ …

  • Petersen tries to stay low-key in return to Boise State

BOISE, Idaho (AP) Chris Petersen tried to stay out of the limelight in his return to Boise. The Washington coach very quietly made his way into Albertsons Stadium and the famous blue turf on Friday night before the Huskies opened the season against No. 23 Boise State. Wearing sunglasses and a purple sweater, Petersen tried to slip quietly into stadium when the Huskies arrived via bus a little more than two hours before kickoff. Those that saw him showered the Huskies coach with chants of ”Pete” as he walked into the stadium on game day for the first time as a visitor. With cameras waiting outside the tunnel to the visitors’ locker room, Petersen came onto the field at 7:35 p.m., about 50 minutes before kickoff. He was greeted by warm applause from the Washington fans in the crowd and the Boise State fans that realized he was on the field and appeared to wave …

  • Migrants bussed to Austria border

Migrants are arriving in Austria after Hungary’s surprise move to provide buses for them. For days, Hungary had blocked migrants from travelling by train to Western Europe, saying it was obliged to register them, sparking angry scenes. Austria says it has agreed with Germany to let the arrivals cross their borders. It comes as European Union states are struggling to agree on how to deal with an unprecedented surge in migrants. Buses began arriving at Keleti station, central Budapest, late on Friday, which has become a makeshift camp for thousands of migrants. Vehicles were also sent to collect hundreds who broke away from the camp to walk on foot along the main road to Austria. When the buses arrived to collect them, some of the migrants argued with officials, fearful they would be arrested rather than sent to Germany, the BBC’s Matthew Price reported. But later, small groups began crossing the border, with some Austrians …

Image copyright Fiat Chrysler Fiat Chrysler has started distributing a software patch for millions of vehicles, via a USB stick sent in the post. In July, two hackers revealed they had been able to take control of a Jeep Cherokee via its internet-connected entertainment system. The car firm has been criticised by security experts who say posting a USB stick is “not a good idea”. Fiat Chrysler has not yet commented to the BBC. ‘Fishing for victims’ Image copyright Jason Cox Image caption Customers were sent the USB stick with a letter explaining how to use it. “This is not a good idea. Now they’re out there, letters like this will be easy to imitate,” said Pete Bassill, chief executive of UK firm Hedgehog Security. “Attackers could send out fake USB sticks and go fishing for victims. It’s the equivalent of email users clicking a malicious link or opening a bad attachment. “There should be …

  • IU scientists use Instagram data to forecast top models at New York Fashion Week

Related images(click to enlarge) With Fashion Week kicking off Sept. 10 in New York City, everyone wants to know who will be the industry’s next top model. The answer may lay far from the glittering world of runways, magazine covers and star-making designers. Researchers at Indiana University have predicted the popularity of new faces to the world of modeling with over 80 percent accuracy using advanced computational methods and data from Instagram. To conduct their analysis, IU scientists gathered statistics on 400 fashion models from the Fashion Model Directory, a major database of professional female fashion models, tracking hair and eye color; height; hip, waist, dress and shoes size; modeling agency; and runways walked. “Popularity” was defined as the number of runway walks in which a new model participated during the Fall/Winter 2015 season in March. Data for the study was collected in fall 2014. The team then analyzed accounts of the models on Instagram, …

  • Reproductive control can be a form of partner violence

(Reuters Health) – Intimate partner violence or abuse can take the form of birth control sabotage, pregnancy pressure or coercion, which can have devastating consequences including unintended pregnancy, abortion and psychological trauma, according to a new review. This type of intimate partner violence is called ‘reproductive coercion,’ and health care providers should know how to screen for it and intervene effectively, the authors write. “Ultimately, (reproductive coercion) is about power and control – the perpetrators get off on that feeling of having complete power over their partners, even to the point of controlling a bodily function exclusive to women: pregnancy,” said lead author Dr. Jeanna Park of the University of Illinois in Chicago. “And although it seems irrational to threaten, coerce or trick a woman into acts that lead to pregnancy, perpetrators will then often force their partners to abort the pregnancy, further perpetuating the cycle of partner violence,” Park told Reuters Health by email. …

  • Miley Cyrus Sneaks Out Of The Club With Cody Simpson

Posted on Fri Sep 4th, 2015 8:10am PDT       By X17 Staff If you blink you’ll miss it! Miley Cyrus is so recognizable that she has a hard time going incognito, but she tried last night as she made her exit from The Nice Guy in Hollywood with Cody Simpson! The VMAs host was escorted out of the back door by an assistant, and the Australian singer followed behind with his leather jacket over his head to avoid being photographed. Someone should tell Gigi Hadid’s ex that he’s not that important! The only reason for these two to hide their hangout is if something is going on romantically. The “Wrecking Ball” songstress is rumored to have broken up with her Victoria’s Secret girlfriend Stella Maxwell, and Cody has been single since his split with his Sports Illustrated stunner ex. We know that the twerking queen goes both ways, so it’s very possible these two are secretly hooking …

  • How I dumped the mega-church model and found something bigger

Each year, the “nones” in our society (those who check “none” for religious affiliation) grow at an astounding rate. Some have used those statistics to declare the end of the American church. And while this fear of secularism is a bit overblown, the stats do raise an essential point: Churches that want to reach ‘nones’ read to retool. “Nones” do not saunter their way back into church because a particular pastor is super-engaging, the music is cool, or the guest services are Disney-esque. “Nones” feel like the church is a separate world in which they have no part. A British friend of mine, Steve Timmis, cites a study in Great Britain in which 70 percent of Brits say they have no intention of ever attending a church service. For any reason. Not at Easter. Not for marriages. Not for funerals or Christmas Eve services. Seventy percent! Great Britain may be a few years ahead of …

  • Arby’s fires Florida manager after police officer joke goes ‘awry’

MIAMI Arby’s sandwich chain fired a South Florida restaurant manager and suspended a clerk after an unfortunate police joke led to a complaint against staff at a drive-thru. The mix-up led to a police woman accusing the store of denying her service simply because she was a cop. Pembroke Pines police officer Jennifer Martin, accused the clerk of refusing to accept her credit card when she ordered a meal on Tuesday at the restaurant a few miles northwest of Miami. She said the manager told her; “He doesn’t want to serve you because you are a police officer.” Martin was eventually served, but decided to return her food and was given a refund. The next day Pembroke Pines police chief Dan Giustino issued a press release saying he had called Arby’s to demand an apology. The clerk, Kenneth Davenport, told local media that the delay in serving Martin was a mix-up as he was busy …
