23 November 2014 Last updated at 22:01 Officials have launched an investigation into the incident and both officers have been placed on leave A 12-year-old boy has been shot dead by police in the US city of Cleveland, after brandishing what turned out to be a fake gun in a playground. Police say an officer fired two shots at the boy after he failed to obey an order to raise his hands. A caller reported the boy to police for scaring people with a gun but said that he did not know if it was real. One of the officers was in his first year on the local force, the other had more than 10 years of experience. ‘Airsoft’ Cleveland deputy police chief Ed Tomba said the boy was shot twice after pulling the gun from the waistband of his trousers. He died later in hospital. The boy did not make any verbal threats nor …

  • Does Hillary Clinton smell like a new car?

By DARLENE SUPERVILLE November 23, 2014 Hillary Rodham Clinton, former US Secretary of State(AP Photo/Bebeto Matthews) President Barack Obama says voters want a “new car smell” in the 2016 White House race and that Hillary Rodham Clinton would be “a great president.” But would Clinton pass that particular smell test? In a nationally televised interview broadcast Sunday, Obama seemed to suggest that any Democrat other than him would provide the turn of the page that he says voters are interested in. He acknowledged the “dings” to his own political standing during nearly six years of sometimes bruising battles with Congress and said Americans will want something new. “They want to drive something off the lot that doesn’t have as much mileage as me,” Obama said in the interview with ABC’s “This Week,” which was taped Friday in Las Vegas following a public appearance there by the president. He said a number of possible Democratic candidates …

  • Exclusive: Why TV anchors met secretly with Ferguson officer who shot Michael Brown

Practically every journalist covering the death of Michael Brown would like to interview Darren Wilson, the police officer who shot and killed Brown. In the pursuit of that interview, several high-profile television anchors have secretly met with Wilson, according to sources at several TV networks. All of the meetings were off the record, meaning the anchors could not describe what was said. These meetings are a normal part of the TV guest booking process, but they’re significant in this case because Wilson has not been seen in public since Brown’s death in Ferguson, Missouri on August 9. Among the anchors who have met with Wilson are Matt Lauer of NBC, George Stephanopoulos of ABC, Scott Pelley of CBS, and Anderson Cooper and Don Lemon of CNN. It is unclear if Wilson, through his representatives, has agreed to be interviewed by any of the journalists. Shortly after I named the anchors on my CNN media …

  • Morales helps Levante stun Valencia

Valencia, Spain (SportsNetwork.com) – Jose Luis Morales’ late second-half tally proved to be the difference on Sunday as Levante stunned Valencia, 2-1, at the Ciutat de Valencia. Levante entered the match second from the bottom in La Liga, but were riding a modest two-game unbeaten streak hoping to escape the bottom three with a win. After a scoreless first 45 minutes, the home side broke the deadlock in the 58th minute through a goal from Victor Casadesus, but Valencia pulled level in the 74th minute with an equalizer from Daniel Parejo. But just seconds later, Morales hit for the winner to give all three points to Levante and lift the club out of the bottom three and into 13th place in La Liga with 12 points from 12 matches played. Valencia suffered its second defeat of the season and drops to fourth in the table on 24 points. Also in Spain’s top flight on Sunday, …

President Obama told ABC that a deal could mark the start of a “long process” to change Iran’s relationship with the rest of the world Foreign ministers trying to reach an agreement on Iran’s nuclear programme are considering extending negotiations, as Monday’s deadline for a deal looms. The diplomats still report “serious gaps” at the talks in Vienna, and may look to agreeing an interim framework. The six nations – the US, UK, Russia, China, Germany and France – want Iran to curb its nuclear programme in return for the lifting of UN sanctions. Iran says it is not seeking nuclear weapons, but wants atomic energy. It says its nuclear programme is solely designed to provide peaceful, civilian projects. On Sunday evening, the so-called P5+1 group and Iranian officials said they were discussing the possibility of extending the negotiations, …

  • Stealth malware found spying on telecoms, energy sectors

Regin malware capable of capturing highjacking infected computers’ functionality. CNET An advanced piece of malware has been uncovered that has been used as long ago as 2008 to spy on governments, companies and individuals, Symantec said in a report released Sunday. The Regin cyberespionage tool uses several stealth features to avoid detection that required a significant investment of time and resources, suggesting it’s the product of a nation state, the antivirus software maker warned, without suggesting which country was behind it. The malware’s design makes it highly suited for long-term mass surveillance, the company said. “Regin’s developers put considerable effort into making it highly inconspicuous. Its low key nature means it can potentially be used in espionage campaigns lasting several years,” the company said in a statement. “Even when its presence is detected, it is very difficult to ascertain what it is doing.” Regin’s highly customizable nature allows for a wide range of remote access …

  • Study: Environmental bleaching impairs long-term coral reproduction

Related images(click to enlarge) A new study by a Florida State University biologist shows that bleaching events brought on by rising sea temperatures are having a detrimental long-term impact on coral. Professor Don Levitan, chair of the Department of Biological Science, writes in the latest issue of Marine Ecology Progress Series that bleaching — a process where high water temperatures or UV light stresses the coral to the point where it loses its symbiotic algal partner that provides the coral with color — is also affecting the long-term fertility of the coral. “Even corals that didn’t bleach aren’t reproducing at the levels they should,” Levitan said. Most corals reproduce by releasing sperm and eggs into the ocean during brief annual spawning events. The chance of sperm finding and fertilizing an egg depends on corals spawning in close proximity and in synchrony with each other. In a study of the corals that build the major framework …

  • I’m thankful our country is still a refuge and the land of opportunity

When I was 7 years old, my family and I landed at JFK Airport in New York City with $90 in our pocket, a few suitcases stuffed with what little we could carry and no idea of what to expect next.  We came here because we were fleeing a totalitarian regime, because generations of our family had been oppressed simply for existing and because the United States was a beacon for our hopes and aspirations, as it has been for millions of others around the globe. ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT The people literally dying to come here now do not believe that our best days are behind us. My paternal grandfather was sent to Soviet gulag in the prime of his life because he was a religious Jew who refused to work on Saturdays and, possibly, because some of his siblings had fled to France several years after the Russian revolution.  He spent years working as a …

  • Lost kitten from New Mexico turns up in duffel bag in Maine

ALBUQUERQUE N.M. (Reuters) – An Albuquerque cat owner can sleep easier now that the kitten that went missing last month will be home for the holidays, despite a mysterious 2,300-mile side trip to Maine. Patsy Murphy, who runs an animal refuge center in Westbrook, Maine, said the kitten, named Spice, was brought to her shelter on Nov. 11 by a man who found the feline in a duffel bag while unloading furniture at a local Catholic charity. “This is a very odd story, we wish she could tell us what happened,” Murphy said of the kitten, which was found inside the bag with food and kitty litter. Murphy said Maine resident Bob Watterson brought the kitten home on Nov. 5, and cared for it for six days before he turned it over to the animal refuge, which found a microchip in the cat that could identify it. Murphy was shocked when the cat was traced …
