  • Stolen pickup found impaled on 30 feet of steel guardrail

ABERDEEN, Idaho –  Authorities say a stolen pickup truck was found impaled on 30 feet of guardrail in Idaho, but the driver was nowhere to be found. Steve Howser, the general manager of The Aberdeen -Springfield Canal Company near Pocatello, said one of his workers was driving along the canal Sunday when he came across the pickup that was run completely through by a steel guard rail and left partially dangling in the water. The sheriff’s office said the vehicle was reported stolen earlier that day. “Somebody made the comment that he must have been driving like he stole it,” Howser said. “We have a car go into the canal a couple of times of year, but nothing like this — there’s probably 30 feet of guardrail through it.” The steel rail pierced the engine compartment and passed through the passenger side of the cab before exiting the rear window, with several yards of the …

  • Four killed during prison riot in Mexico’s Tamaulipas state

June 7 (UPI) — Mexican officials said at least three security officers and one inmate died after a prison riot in Ciudad Victoria, the capital of the Tamaulipas state. The riot, which lasted at least 3 hours, began Tuesday night after state police officers checked to see if weapons were smuggled into the prison. “The preliminary balance is four dead and six injured. Three of the deceased are police and an inmate,” public safety spokesman Luis Alberto Rodríguez said. El Universal reported, citing unofficial sources, that at least five other inmates are also possibly dead. After the riot broke out, a large police presence mobilized to the scene. Families of inmates then flooded the area. Some attempted to prevent a police riot truck access to the prison. “They’re going to kill them. They’re going to kill them,” a lady who identified herself as an inmate’s mother shouted. Authorities at the prison said more information would …

  • Uber executive fired amid reports he obtained rape victim’s medical records

A top Uber executive who reportedly obtained the medical records of a woman who was raped by her Uber driver was only fired after journalists learned of the incident, it emerged on Wednesday. According to reports on the tech website Recode and in the New York Times, Eric Alexander, the president of business for Uber Asia Pacific, obtained the medical records of the victim in a 2014 rape case that caused widespread outrage in India. An Uber spokesperson confirmed that Alexander was no longer with the company, but declined to comment further on the allegations. Alexander did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The rape case prompted Indian authorities to temporarily ban Uber in the capital city. Alexander reportedly traveled to India to investigate the matter and later shared the records with CEO Travis Kalanick and senior vice-president Emil Michael. The trio of executives reportedly cast doubt upon the victim’s account and suggested …

  • Fibre-linked atomic clocks put special relativity to the test

Well connected: an optical clock at PTB was used in the comparison Atomic clocks in France, Germany and the UK have been used to perform the best-ever confirmation of time dilation as set out in Einstein’s special theory of relativity. The clocks have been connected recently by optical-fibre links, which let the devices be compared to each other to an extremely high degree of statistical resolution. The work was done by an international team of physicists that says the test could still be improved further by several orders of magnitude. The study uses the “Robertson–Mansouri–Sexl” (RMS) framework for violating special relativity. RMS assumes that there is a preferred reference frame in which the average speed of light measured on a return journey (there and back again) between two points is constant in all directions. RMS contradicts special relativity in all other reference frames by assuming that the average speed of light of a return journey …

  • Lower-income U.S. adults haven’t seen heart health gains

Heart health in the U.S. has generally improved since the start of the 21st century, but not for adults living in poverty, a new study suggests. Between 1999 and 2014, high-income people had decreases in rates of high blood pressure, smoking and high risk for heart disease. The same wasn’t true for low-income people, however. An earlier study of risk factors for heart disease in the U.S. in 1971-2002 also found more of them among low-income people – but “that was 10 years ago,” lead author Dr. Ayodele Odutayo of the University of Oxford in the UK and St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto told Reuters Health. “So, it was quite dated and we didn’t have more modern information on this.” Odutayo and colleagues write in JAMA Cardiology that great strides have been made over the past two decades in reducing the number of people at risk for heart disease due to smoking, high blood pressure, …

  • Billy Eichner roams New York with the cast of NBC’s ‘This Is Us’

June 7 (UPI) — Comedian Billy Eichner confronted New York City pedestrians with several cast members from NBC’s hit drama This Is Us. Mandy Moore, Milo Ventimiglia, Chrissy Metz and Justin Hartley joned Eichner for a segment on his TruTV television show Billy on the Street in which the group ambushed New Yorkers to ask questions about the show. Eichner declared it was the first time he had gathered multiple cast members from the same show for the “man on the street” style segment, as he quizzed passersby about their knowledge of the show. The cast of the show remained relatively silent in the background as Eichner questioned whether the impromptu interviewees were familiar with the show and asked for their favorite cast members and story lines. Eichner also poked fun at the cast members and the stunned pedestrians throughout their street side romp which included one man asking if Moore was single and a …

  • Gov. Bevin: Forget liberal media spin, Trump can tout lots of accomplishments on Tuesday night

I was in Washington, D.C. this weekend attending a meeting of the National Governors Association. On February 28, a day after our meetings conclude, President Trump will address a joint session of Congress. Despite an unprecedented level of criticism from the largely liberal media, much of it unwarranted and unfair, the president will have many impressive accomplishments to talk about during his speech. Many of these will have direct, positive impacts in my home state of Kentucky and throughout the United States.  For example, President Trump signed a bill that will roll back the Obama administration’s last minute “stream protection rule.” Though the rule was given a name that sounds beneficial, it would have escalated the “war on coal” resulting in the elimination of tens of thousands of coal mining jobs. Many of the so-called protections in the rule were already addressed by sections of the Clean Water Act. What’s more, the Obama Department of the Interior failed to adequately consult with states while drafting the rule. Instead, they …

  • Surveillance cameras capture intruder with 4 paws on the piano

VAIL, Colo. — Video of a black bear poking around and hitting a few notes on a piano inside of a condominium in Colorado is getting thousands of views online.  CBS Denver reports the homeowner originally thought the incident was a burglary. But her surveillance cameras captured the intruder, which had four paws.  Police say the bear made its way into the residence in an East Vail neighborhood on Wednesday. The officer who responded to the call found evidence that the bear pushed itself through an open kitchen window.  In the video, the bear can be seen wandering around the apartment. At one point, it goes over to a piano, puts its paws on the keys and starts playing a few loud, dissonant notes.  In a news release, police said “the chords captured on video were unbearable and the tune was equally grizzly.”  The bear caused minor damage to the home. It managed to take …
