  • Actress Jennifer Lawrence contacts authorities after nude photos hacked

(Reuters) – Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence has contacted authorities to investigate who stole and posted nude images of her online, a spokeswoman said on Monday, part of a reported mass hacking of celebrities’ intimate photos. Online pictures of the actress, 24, who won an Academy Award for “Silver Linings Playbook” and stars in “The Hunger Games” movie franchise, began appearing on Sunday. The source of the hack was unclear. Images purporting to be of dozens of other female actresses, models and athletes were also posted. The authenticity of many could not be confirmed. “This is a flagrant violation of privacy. • Exclusive: From Seoul to Mexico City, pressure mounts to ease U.S. oil export ban

WASHINGTON/SEOUL (Reuters) – Washington is facing growing international pressure to ease its long standing ban on crude oil exports, with South Korea and Mexico joining the European Union in pressing the case for U.S. oil shipments overseas. South Korean President Park Geun-hye told a visiting U.S. delegation of lawmakers on the House of Representatives energy committee on Aug. 11 that tapping into the gusher of ultra-light, sweet crude emerging from places like Texas and North Dakota was a priority, the lawmakers said. One of South Korea’s leading refiners has opened discussions with the government in Seoul over how to encourage Washington to open the taps, three sources in South Korea with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters. Mexico is also eagerly awaiting word from the U.S. Department of Commerce on possible shipments and the EU wants U.S. oil and natural gas exports covered by a proposed trade agreement with Washington, the Transatlantic Trade and …

  • How celebrities’ nude photos get leaked

It’s possible that hacked celebrities, like Jennifer Lawrence, had easy-to-guess passwords. How did private, nude photos of Jennifer Lawrence and other celebrities get leaked all over the Internet Sunday? A combination of a common Internet scam, weak passwords and a since-fixed vulnerability in Apple’s photo backup service could be to blame. Hackers usually send fake emails, posing as their bank, Facebook (FB, Tech30) or an email provider. Those so-called phishing scams make people think they’re coming from a trusted source leading them to enter their user names and passwords onto a fake website owned by hackers. It’s also possible that the hacked celebrities had easy-to-guess passwords. Typically, online services only let users guess passwords a handful of times before blocking access. But until this week, Apple’s iCloud backup service allowed people to guess passwords over and over — it would never lock people out. • Kirk beats out Horschel for Deutsche Bank title

Norton, MA (SportsNetwork.com) – Chris Kirk fired a final-round, 5-under 66 and he was able to hold off Billy Horschel and win the Deutsche Bank Championship by two shots on Monday. Kirk, who jumped to the top of the FedExCup playoff points list with two events to play, finished the week at 15-under-par 269 at TPC Boston. His last win was at the McGladrey Classic earlier this season. “Just trying to go play like I did yesterday,” said Kirk, who shot a 64 in Sunday’s third round. “Obviously I didn’t shoot quite as low as I did yesterday, but you know I really felt good with my putter today and just unbelievable. Obviously my biggest win ever.” Horschel, needing a birdie to tie or an eagle to win heading to the par-5 last hole, put his drive in the middle of the fairway, giving him a shot to make the green in two. However, the …

This Time Lord is ready for battle in his retro threads in “Japanese Doctor Who.” Video screenshot by Bonnie Burton/CNET Whovians have paid tribute to the British sci-fi series “Doctor Who” by making their own fan films for decades. The iconic show has been re-imagined as a cartoon, as anime, and even as a musical mashup with Sherlock. So why not as a Japanese sci-fi superhero show? • NASA Probes Studying Earth’s Radiation Belts to Celebrate Two Year Anniversary

[image-36] NASA’s twin Van Allen Probes will celebrate on Saturday two years of studying the sun’s influence on our planet and near-Earth space. The probes, shortly after launch in August 2012, discovered a third radiation belt around Earth when only two had previously been detected. The radiation belts are layers of energetic charged particles held in place by the magnetic field surrounding our planet. The new third belt occurred only occasionally but persisted for as long as a month. This revealed to scientists the dynamic and variable nature of the radiation belts and provided new insight into how they respond to solar activity. “The primary science objective of the Van Allen Probes is to provide understanding of how particles in the radiation belts form and change in response to energy input from the sun,” said Mona Kessel, the mission’s program scientist at NASA Headquarters in Washington.  “The discoveries and understanding gained have far exceeded expectations.” …

  • Family dinners may help kids cope with cyberbullying

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Like victims of face-to-face bullying, kids who experience internet bullying are vulnerable to mental health and substance use problems – but spending more time communicating with their parents may help protect them from these harmful consequences, a new study suggests. For example, the researchers found, regular family dinners seemed to help kids cope with online bullying. But they say talk time with parents in cars or other settings can also help protect against the effects of cyberbullying. “In a way, cyberbullying is more insidious because it’s so hard to detect,” said lead author Frank J. Elgar of the Institute for Health and Social Policy at McGill University in Montreal. “It’s hard for teachers and parents to pick up on,” Elgar told Reuters Health by phone. He and his team used voluntary, anonymous survey data from more than 18,000 teens at 49 schools in Wisconsin. About one in five students said …

  • Labor Day: Congress must take action to protect workers, not Big Labor

New legislation could repeal the current authority of the National Labor Relations Board.Reuters The U.S. economy has endured eleven recessions since World War II – and in each case jobs and wages bounced back quickly.   Not this time. America’s current “recovery” features the weakest wage growth of any economic rebound – with data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) showing real compensation per hour increasing by only 0.5 percent since 2009.  ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT No agency has been more instrumental in the assault on American productivity than the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) – which was recently at the heart of a major constitutional crisis. By comparison, the average compensation increase at this point in previous recoveries clocked in at a whopping 9.2 percent – more than eighteen times higher.  Meanwhile a new study by the Chicago Fed reveals real wages should be at least 3.6 percentage points higher than they are based on prevailing labor …

  • Arizona man arrested for burning, urinating on Bible

PHOENIX (Reuters) – A 22-year-old Arizona man calling himself “Dark Lord” has been arrested for allegedly burning a Bible and urinating on it outside a Christian-oriented homeless shelter in northern Arizona, police said on Friday. Eric Minerault was booked into the Yavapai County Detention Center late on Thursday on suspicion of one count of unlawful symbol burning stemming from the incident at the Gospel Rescue Mission, Prescott police spokesman Lieutenant Ken Morley said in a written statement. Police were called to the scene at about 9 p.m. by a mission representative reporting that someone was burning something on the mission’s front steps, Morley said. Officers found Minerault standing on the steps, with a burned and wet Bible on the ground near him. He quickly admitted to the act.  He told officers the mission was selected because he believed it was a place of Christian worship and he was “cursing the Christians,” police said. Asked why, …
