  • Vote Now: Where Should Roll Call Travel to Cover the Midterms?

By Shira T. Center Posted at 7:09 a.m. today 0 Tweet Roll Call’s Alexis Levinson, left, talks with a House candidate in Iowa, David Young, during August recess. (Tom Williams/CQ Roll Call File Photo) Will it be Omaha or San Diego? Raleigh or Topeka? Lexington or Denver? Two days of voting have passed in Roll Call’s first reader survey to determine where we should send reporters cover the midterms. The polls for this round close Friday at 5 p.m. As of Wednesday morning, the Kansas contest held a clear lead among Senate races. But that could change quickly if the state Supreme Court refuses to let the Democrat off the ballot, which could complicate the path for a wealthy independent candidate, Greg Orman, to take on GOP Sen. Pat Roberts in November. A decision is expected this week. House contests in Nebraska and San Diego keep trading the top spot in that category. That might have something …

  • Panthers unsure if Hardy will play Sunday against Pittsburgh

CHARLOTTE, N.C. –  Panthers coach Ron Rivera isn’t sure if Greg Hardy will play Sunday night against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Rivera also said Monday that the team hasn’t considered releasing the Pro Bowl defensive end who is involved in a domestic violence case. He added that Hardy will continue to practice and attend team meetings, but the coach won’t make a decision on when Hardy plays until later this week. ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT The Panthers plan to continue gathering information in what Rivera said is “a very fluid situation.” Hardy was convicted July 15 of assault on a female and communicating threats after the victim claimed he threw her down on a bed of guns and tossed her into the shower. He is appealing the ruling. Hardy played in Week 1 but Rivera deactivated him just hours before Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions — two days after the coach had said Hardy would play. Rivera said Panthers owner Jerry Richardson was involved in the Hardy discussion and the …

  • Sony forecasts $2.1B loss this year

Sony president and CEO Kazuo Hirai will have to figure out how to make the company’s mobiles profitable. CNET Sony may be doing very well with its latest console, with the PlayStation 4 outselling its main competitor, the Xbox One, but it hasn’t been enough to save the company from posting a loss for the fifth time in six years. The Japanese company has released a forecast stating that it expects to losses of up to 230 billion yen ($2.1 billion), partly due to a write-down of the value of the company’s mobile business to the tune of 180 billion yen ($1.67 billion). Sony says the “competitive environment of the mobile business” is to blame, and is expected to implement a change of strategy with regard to its Mobile Communications division by concentrating its efforts in “certain geographical areas, premium lineups and reducing the number of models in its mid-range lineup.” The company last reported …

  • Wanted by NASA: Space Telescope Director with Spy Credentials

Conspiracy theorists may wonder, why does NASA’s next major telescope director need top secret clearance? The space agency recently posted a want ad for a person to lead its James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) program, and in addition to aerospace engineering credentials and management experience, the candidate must have the highest possible level of security credentials.   NASA says the requirement is standard, although the ad raised some eyebrows in the security community. “It seems quite unusual,” says former CIA analyst Allen Thomson, who speculates that the clearance might allow the JWST director to coordinate using NASA telescope technology for National Reconnaissance Office satellites. Steven Aftergood of the Federation of American Scientists’ Project on Government Secrecy noted the requirement on his Secrecy News blog. “My first reaction was surprise that this was among the key requirements for the position,” Aftergood says. “And it’s a sign of just how closely the civilian space program is intertwined …

  • Where’s the outrage over Brendan Tevlin’s death by a self-professed jihadist?

“He could’ve been my son.”  That’s what President Obama said about Trayvon Martin in 2012. And it was true. He could’ve passed for the president’s son. No doubt Trayvon’s parents miss him every day.  ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT The president also expressed outrage about the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri this summer. And rightly so, no parents should have to bury their sons. It is tragic. When I look at this picture of Brendan Tevlin, I think, he could have been my son. A 19-year-old, suburban boy. Strawberry blond, athletic, bright and smiley.  Brendan could be my son, or yours. His only crime? Being in the wrong place at the wrong time, targeted by a person terrorizing a community and exacting revenge. On June 25, he texted his Mom, Allison, that he was on his way home from a friend’s house. But he never made it there. Minutes later, Ali Muhammad Brown walked up to …

  • Swiss keeper shocked after fans urinate in his water bottle

(Reuters) – A Swiss goalkeeper has threatened legal action after fans of a rival lower league team urinated in his water bottle and then taunted him when, unawares, he took a sip during a match at the weekend. FC Muri goalkeeper Reto Felder said he had felt sick after tasting the warm contents of the bottle, which he had left near the goalpost during the 1. Liga (third tier) game at FC Baden near Zurich. “The idea of drinking piss is simply intolerable,” the Aargauer Zeitung website (www.aargauerzeitung.ch) quoted the 34-year-old player as saying, adding that he was waiting for an analysis of video evidence before further action. “What if next time it is something that knocks you out?,” added Felder. Swiss tabloid Blick reported that the unidentified fans had persuaded a ball boy behind the goal to pass them the bottle during the second half of the match. The paper said the fans shouted …
