  • Death of woman in jail cell prompts Texas House committee meeting

AUSTIN, Texas A Texas House of Representative committee plans to meet on Thursday to look into conditions that led to the death of Sandra Bland, a black motorist whose apparent suicide in jail has raised questions about what role race played in her treatment. Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw and a county sheriff who has been a critic of inadequate jail facilities were expected to testify at the Texas House Committee of County Affairs hearing. “This isn’t to beat up on somebody,” state Representative and committee chairman Garnet Coleman was quoted as saying by broadcaster KHOU. “We want to solve problems.” The committee will look at jail standards, procedures for managing potentially mentally ill people and interactions between the public and law enforcement, it said on its website. Bland was found hanged in her cell three days after her July 10 arrest for a minor traffic offense in Waller County, about 50 …

  • House Democrats Going Good Cop/Bad Cop Against GOP

By Eli Yokley Posted at 5 a.m. today 0 Tweet The DCCC, led by Luján, right, and DPCC, led by Israel, left, are teaming up on an ambitious August project. (File Photo By Bill Clark/CQ Roll Call) House Democrats are scheduled to meet Thursday to review an ambitious new plan to target Republicans when lawmakers head home for the August recess. The strategy – devised jointly over the past few months by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and Democratic Policy and Communications Committee – is part of an effort to “make the case locally that Republicans and their misguided priorities are failing hardworking Americans across the country,” said DCCC Chairman Ben Ray Luján, D-N.M., in a statement to CQ Roll Call. The two groups, one focused on politics and other more focused on policy, will essentially lead a good cop/bad cop routine. Democratic lawmakers, playing the good cops, will utilize an August Playbook drafted by the DPCC to tout the …

  • Restaurant CEO: $15 minimum wage hurts teen jobs

Fast food workers are clamoring for a higher minimum wage. But the CEO of one big restaurant chain worries that boosting the minimum wage to $15 an hour could hurt teens looking for their first job. Sally Smith, the CEO of Buffalo Wild Wings (BWLD), told CNNMoney Wednesday that her company and other restaurants may not want to hire teens for $15 an hour because that’s too much to pay for an inexperienced worker. “It’s important to remind people that the restaurant industry trains a lot of people. Restaurants are often where a person gets their first job. They get it in high school or college,” Smith said. “So a $15 minimum wage could have an impact on youth employment.” Buffalo Wild Wings isn’t actually on the list of 116 companies that would be affected by New York State’s proposal to raise the minimum wage for fast food workers to $15 an hour. • The Latest: Belichick says Brady suspension won’t alter camp

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) Here is the latest surrounding the suspension of star Patriots quarterback Tom Brady for using deflated footballs (all times local): 10:35 a.m. Patriots coach Bill Belichick says the four-game suspension for star quarterback Tom Brady and the saga surrounding deflated footballs won’t alter his team’s preparation for the season. Belichick deflected all questions about the scandal known as ”Deflategate” on Wednesday, one day after NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell affirmed the suspension for Brady for using doctored footballs in the AFC championship game. Instead of offering his take, Belichick referred to statements about the issue from team owner Robert Kraft as his team opened training camp. When asked whether backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo would get more practice in camp, Belichick replied by saying: ”We practice everybody.” Belichick says every player needs to re-establish his level of performance. Belichick says when asked whether he has spoken to Brady that he talks to the team …

  • Extra sneaky Hammertoss malware acts just like you on your computer

Hammertoss is malware that acts like normal computer users while stealing sensitive files. Getty Images/Ikon Images Malware — the destructive software that sneaks onto your computer and helps hackers breach important systems — usually has a tell. While it’s running on your computer, it doesn’t act like you do, and that’s how security systems often detect it. Until now. A new type of malware found by security company FireEye mimics normal computer user behavior the entire time it’s compromising files on a victim’s machine. It can even time itself to the victim’s work schedule. That renders all those efforts to look for strange behavior useless. While antivirus software and other malware detection programs might clean up other bad files from our computers, this one’s likely to stay silently at work. The malware is called Hammertoss, and FireEye believes it is being used by a hacking group sponsored by the Russian government. In a world of …

  • Search for Alien Life Ignites Battle over Giant Telescope

There is a gaping hole in the latest effort to reinvigorate the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI), one so big it could hold an estimated 357 million boxes of cornflakes. The hole opened last week when tech billionaire Yuri Milner announced the Breakthrough Listen initiative, a 10-year, $100-million shot in the arm for SETI, operated through Milner’s Breakthrough Prize Foundation. The initiative includes funding for unprecedented amounts of SETI time at three world-class observatories: the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia, the Automated Planet Finder telescope in California and the Parkes Observatory in Australia. What’s missing from the partnership is the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, which at 305 meters wide is the biggest and most sensitive single-dish radio telescope in the world. SETI godfather and former Arecibo director, astronomer Frank Drake, once calculated that the instrument could not only hold all those cornflakes, but also receive (or send) radio messages throughout much of the …

  • Sanofi’s combination diabetes drug hits goal in late-stage trial

PARIS Sanofi said on Wednesday a first late-stage Phase III study of its LixiLan diabetes drug had met its main target, while another would be completed at the end of the third quarter. LixiLan consists of a single-injection combination of Lyxumia, a drug developed with Danish drugmaker Zealand Pharma, and Sanofi’s Lantus. It targets patients suffering from type 2 diabetes. The first study tested the efficacy and safety of LixiLan versus treatment with either Lantus or Lyxumia alone. The new drug proved better at reducing average blood glucose levels than either Lantus or Lyxumia. A second study is investigating LixiLan patients whose type 2 diabetes is not adequately controlled on Lantus alone. “Full results will be communicated in an appropriate scientific forum,” the French drugmaker said in a statement. “Following an analysis of results from both Phase III studies … Sanofi will determine the next steps in the regulatory process,” Sanofi said. “Currently, regulatory submissions …

  • Report: Ben Affleck Has Been Dating Family Nanny Christine Ouzounian

Posted on Wed Jul 29th, 2015 8:05am PDT       By X17 Staff This is every wife’s worst nightmare! Ben Affleck has reportedly been dating the nanny he and estranged wife Jennifer Garner hired to look after their children this spring, Us Weekly reports. The 28-year-old woman named Christine Ouzounian was fired once the A-list actress discovered the romance, but the Batman star continues to see her behind closed doors. How cliche can he possibly get?! “They would hang out without the kids. And they were very flirty,” a source close to Ouzounian dished to the mag. Umm, if this poor little maid has a prayer of this working out, the last thing she wants to do is have all her friends blabbing to the media! The pair allegedly spent time together at the Boston hunk’s L.A. rental on July 17, and have been in constant contact over text, email, and phone. The bubbly blonde is so stoked …

  • Let’s not forget about the IRS scandal

For the fourth time in two years, I am testifying before a congressional panel investigating the unlawful and unconstitutional targeting scheme by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The necessity of repeated trips to Capitol Hill on behalf of my clients to bring national attention to this matter is reflective of the Obama administration’s incredible unwillingness to get to the bottom of this scandal.  Rather than seek justice for my clients while holding those responsible accountable, this administration has engaged in a strategy of stalling. They are trying to run out the clock. Today in testimony before the Oversight subcommittee of the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, I am telling lawmakers that the hearing is another vital step toward obtaining the truth as we learn what happened, hold responsible officials accountable, and take steps to ensure this abuse will never be repeated. This hearing comes as new revelations surface about this scandal – including a stunning finding by …

  • Fugitive-turned-actor arrested after U.S. Marshals read film write-up

SEATTLE A fugitive bank-robber-turned-actor has been arrested in Washington state after U.S. agents spotted his picture in a newspaper article about a low-budget horror film in which he plays an evil doctor, an official said on Monday. Officers on a U.S. Marshals Service fugitive task force saw Jason Stange’s picture in the Olympian newspaper’s feature last week on horror movie “Marla Mae,” said Jack Williams, chief deputy for the agency’s western district of Washington state. The officers, who had been tracking his disappearance for several months, identified him by the photo and a unique forearm tattoo, Williams said. Marshals tracked him from a filming location to a store in Olympia, where he was arrested without incident on Friday, he said. Stange was sentenced to nearly 10 years in prison and five years supervised release in 2006 after pleading guilty to armed bank robbery, Williams said. He was freed on supervised release in 2014, but had …
