  • Brosnan had knife in hand luggage

The Irish actor has recently finished filming the movie I.T. alongside Anna Friel Pierce Brosnan has been stopped by airport security officials for trying to board a US flight carrying a knife. The former 007 star was prevented by Transportation Security Administration agents at Burlington International Airport in Vermont with the 10in (25cm) hunting knife in his hand luggage. The local police department said Brosnan was allowed to continue his journey after the issue was resolved. The Irish-American’s James Bond films include GoldenEye and Die Another Day. Brosnan, 62, was reportedly embarrassed and angry when the knife was taken away by agents. TSA rules state that sharp objects such as knives, box cutters and scissors longer than 4 inches must be stored in checked baggage. Lieutenant Shawn Burke, from the Burlington Police Department, said airport authorities told him about Brosnan’s encounter with Transportation Security Administration officials. He said the Irish actor “was encountered by TSA …

  • Kasich, Christie make the cut for prime-time Republican debate

WASHINGTON Republican Governors Chris Christie and John Kasich on Tuesday grabbed the last spots on stage next to front-runner Donald Trump and seven others in the first prime-time presidential debate, winning a potentially valuable head start in exposure. Former Texas Governor Rick Perry, former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum and five others in the crowded 2016 Republican field were left out of Thursday’s televised 9 p.m. EDT debate by host Fox News, which invited the top 10 candidates in an average of five recent opinion polls. The leftover candidates will appear in a separate forum outside of the spotlight at 5 p.m. EDT on Thursday, leaving them fighting to win attention and prove to voters and donors they have a legitimate shot at the nomination. At center stage in prime time will be Trump, the real estate mogul who has shot to the top of Republican polls, flanked by former Florida Governor Jeb Bush and Wisconsin …

  • Disney mixed earnings report bolstered by The Avengers

Disney reported quarterly earnings Tuesday that were mixed, exceeding earnings expectations but reporting revenues that fell short. Disney (DIS) revenue was up 5% from the same quarter a year ago, totaling $13.1 billion, but Wall Street analysts were expecting $13.2 billion. It posted earnings of $1.45 per share, better than the anticipated $1.42 a share. Disney stock fell roughly 3% in after-hours trading. A bright spot for Disney was its movie studio revenues which surged 13%, largely because of the Marvel superhero mash-up, “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” which brought in over $1.3 billion at the global box office since May. • Jags GM: Team not expecting banned WR Blackmon to ever return

Oct 13, 2013; Denver, CO, USA; Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Justin Blackmon (14) on the sidelines in the fourth quarter against the Denver Broncos at Sports Authority Field at Mile High. The Broncos defeated the Jaguars 35-19. Mandatory Credit: Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports Nearly two years after Justin Blackmon’s last NFL practice, the Jacksonville Jaguars have all but given up on the suspended receiver. General manager Dave Caldwell said Tuesday he’s pretty much lost hope Blackmon will return. Caldwell hasn’t had any contact with Blackmon in some time and believes the former Oklahoma State star’s skills would be diminished if he was reinstated by the league. The NFL suspended Blackmon indefinitely in November 2013 after repeated violations of the league’s substance-abuse policy. “Realistically, I think when you’re away from the game (this long), what you were once is not what you probably will be,” Caldwell said from his office Tuesday. “Your skills do erode, especially …

  • Hopes fade for champion freediver

Molchanova displays a tag proving her freediving depth (86m – 282 feet) during a freediving championship in Villefranche-sur-Mer in France in 2005 Natalia Molchanova, the 53-year-old Russian champion freediver, is feared dead after going missing on Sunday. Ms Molchanova, who holds 41 world records, was diving for fun off Formentera, a Spanish island near Ibiza, when she failed to surface. Search efforts have been continuing but it is feared she may have been caught up in strong underwater currents. Her passion for freediving “burned so deep inside of her that she dedicated her life to it”, her family said. She was a competitive swimmer as a young woman but left the sport to have a family, going on to take up freediving – underwater diving while holding one’s breath – some 20 years later. She became “the most decorated competitive freediver in the world”, with 41 world records, becoming a 23-time world champion in freediving, …

  • Astronomers Gather in Hawaii Amid Controversy over Giant Telescope

HONOLULU—The mood is different this year at the General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union (IAU), the largest gathering of astronomers, which meets every three years. Amid the usual scientific posters and talks on the history of the solar system and galaxy formation here at the Hawaii Convention Center are alert sentries at every entrance diligently screening for protesters. The normally benign field of astronomy finds itself embroiled in controversy around the planned construction of one of the world’s most powerful telescopes on the peak of Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano with ideal conditions for observation that is also a sacred place to Native Hawaiians. The intended facility, called the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) after its gargantuan primary mirror’s size, would be the 13th observatory on Mauna Kea and by far the largest. Protesters see construction on the mountain as the desecration of a holy place that has long held meaning for Hawaiians. They object …

  • Spicing Up Your Meals Might Extend Your Life

TUESDAY, Aug. 4, 2015 (HealthDay News) — Some like it hot, and a new study finds that folks who favor spicy foods might also have a lower risk of premature death. The study was based on a large multi-year food analysis. It found that adults who reported eating spicy foods — such as fresh and dried chili pepper — as little as three days per week were less likely to die during the study period than those who consumed such foods less than once a week. “The finding is very simple,” said study lead author Dr. Lu Qi, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston. “If you eat more spicy food, it’s better for your health and lowers the risk for mortality, especially as it relates to cancer and heart disease.” However, the study authors cautioned that their investigation was not able to draw a direct cause-and-effect link between the consumption …

  • Hillary Clinton’s health and the media: What concerns this physician

Hillary Clinton’s physician released a letter regarding her health on Friday that ended with an endorsement: “She is in excellent physical condition and fit to serve as President of the United States.” But can an internist like Dr. Lisa Bardack of the Mount Kisco Medical Group possibly know if a person is medically fit to be president? Or do the stresses and conditions of the presidency have an impact that is impossible to predict? This, after all, isn’t the same as clearing someone to run a marathon.   I’ll tell you what Dr. Bardack does know. She knows that in December 2012, “Mrs. Clinton was found to have a transverse sinus thrombosis and began anticoagulation therapy to dissolve the clot.” She knows that Clinton subsequently tested negative for all clotting disorders. But in my opinion, given that Clinton also suffered deep venous thrombosis in her legs in 1998 and in 2009, the tendency to form …

  • Three times lucky as Kerry swaps crutches for Kennedy clan cane

KUALA LUMPUR U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Wednesday swapped the crutches he has been on since breaking his leg in a cycling accident in May for a silver-handled cane that served successive members of the Kennedy clan, including former president John Kennedy and his father Joseph. Kerry appeared with the cane at meetings with countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in Malaysia. He said it had been loaned to him by Vicki Kennedy, widow of Senator Teddy Kennedy. “This cane has a history,” Kerry joked at the start of one meeting in Kuala Lumpur. “This cane belonged to Ambassador Joseph B. Kennedy in England during the war. And after the war, President Kennedy, before he became president, used this cane when his back was bad after the war,” he said. “And then Teddy Kennedy, who broke his back, used the cane,” Kerry said, adding that Teddy Kennedy had loaned him the …
