  • Man found guilty of 2010 killing of Chicago police officer

CHICAGO A judge on Tuesday found a man guilty of fatally shooting a Chicago police officer after a scuffle in a police station parking lot in 2010, prosecutors said. Cook County Criminal Court Judge Timothy Joyce rejected a defense argument that Bryant Brewer, 29, was insane at the time he shot and killed Officer Thor Soderberg. Brewer was convicted of first degree murder in the killing of Soderberg and the attempted murders of Officers Kim Thorpe, Officer Lynn Casey and Sgt. Jason Kazinski, said Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton. Brewer also was convicted of armed robbery. Brewer shot Soderberg with the officer’s own service weapon after a struggle in the parking lot on the city’s South Side. Brewer had bragged on the stand that he was proud of having killed a police officer, the Chicago Sun-Times said. Sentencing in the case is set for 1 p.m. on Sept. 9 in Chicago. An …

  • Americans say blacks treated less fairly in 2015 than 2007: Gallup

NEW YORK In the wake of high profile killings of unarmed black men by police, Americans feel blacks are treated less fairly today than they were in 2007, according to survey results released on Tuesday. Whites, blacks and Hispanics also expressed a new low in their satisfaction with the way blacks are treated in U.S. society, according to the Gallup 2015 Minority Rights and Relations poll. Overall, about 49 percent of respondents said they were satisfied, compared to 62 percent just two years ago, pollsters said. The survey of more than 2,000 respondents, conducted from June 15 until July 10, comes at a tense time between U.S. law enforcement and the communities in which they operate, particularly after grand jury decisions not to indict white officers who killed unarmed black men in Ferguson, Missouri, and in New York City. “The effects of those incidents have led to an increase in the U.S. public’s perceptions of …

  • Netflix to offer unlimited parental leave

Photo: CNNMoney Netflix employees can now take unlimited paid parental leave, the company announced Tuesday. The policy applies to the first year after a child is born or adopted. Both parents can take as much time off as they want during that period. They might choose to return to work part time or to come back full time for a few months and then leave again. Netflix (NFLX, Tech30) will continue to pay their full salaries and offer benefits, and parents won’t have to file for disability or other state coverage. The California-based streaming service already has an unlimited time-off policy for vacation and sick days but did not specify what its current parental leave policy is. “Netflix’s continued success hinges on us competing for and keeping the most talented individuals in their field. Experience shows people perform better at work when they’re not worrying about home,” said Netflix chief talent officer Tawni Cranz in …

  • Donaldson and Tulowitzki homer, Jays beat Twins 3-1

TORONTO (AP) Josh Donaldson and Troy Tulowitzki hit solo home runs, Marco Estrada pitched 6 2-3 innings to win consecutive starts and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Minnesota Twins 3-1 on Tuesday night. Toronto’s sixth win in seven games moved the Blue Jays ahead of the Twins and into the second AL wild-card spot. Minnesota has been held to just one run in four of its past five games, losing all four. The Twins are 5-12 since the All-Star break. Donaldson and Tulowitzki both drilled second-deck homers off Twins right-hander Phil Hughes, who leads the majors with 27 home runs allowed this season. Colorado’s Kyle Kendrick has surrendered 26. Hughes (10-7) lost for the first time since June 8 against Kansas City, snapping a streak of six straight winning decisions. He allowed five hits and three runs in 5 2-3 innings. Hughes walked two batters, just the second time this season he has walked …

  • Malaysia warrant ‘silencing media’

Ms Rewcastle-Brown’s Sarawak Report, which was blocked in Malaysia, has published multiple articles on corruption allegations linked to PM Najib Razak A UK-based editor has accused Malaysia of “silencing free media” after it issued a warrant for her arrest. Clare Rewcastle-Brown’s Sarawak Report website has published multiple articles on corruption allegations linked to Malaysian PM Najib Razak. Malaysian police said Ms Rewcastle-Brown was engaging in “activity detrimental to parliamentary democracy” and disseminating false reports. Mr Najib was cleared of wrongdoing by a corruption agency force this week. The agency said hundreds of millions of dollars found in Mr Najib’s personal accounts were not from the 1MDB state investment fund he had set up, but were donations. It did not disclose who the donations were from or what they were for. The Sarawak Report website was recently blocked in Malaysia. Ms Rewcastle-Brown, who lives in London, told Channel News Asia that several newspapers had been shut …

  • Hey, Siri

Apple is working on a service that will enlist Siri to transcribe voice mail messages for iPhone users, Business Insider reported Monday. Apple employees reportedly are testing the service in preparation for a 2016 rollout, possibly as a new feature in iOS 10. When a call is placed to a phone that has iCloud Voicemail enabled and you don’t answer it, Siri will pick it up for you. Depending on who the caller is, Siri can provide information about where you are and why you can’t answer the call, according to the report. If your caller leaves a voice message, Siri will notify you and send you a transcription. “This is a natural evolution for Siri,” said Tim Bajarin, president of Creative Strategies. “A Siri transcription service would be a welcome feature for Apple users, since many times they don’t have the ability or time to retrieve voice mails,” he told TechNewsWorld. “They could now …

  • The ghostly remnants of galaxy interactions uncovered in a nearby galaxy group

Related images(click to enlarge) Astronomers using the Subaru Telescope’s Hyper Suprime-Cam prime-focus camera recently observed the nearby large spiral galaxy M81, together with its two brightest neighbors, M82 and NGC3077. The results of their observations are deep, super wide-field images of the galaxies and their populations of young stars. As part of a Galactic Archaeology study, the team discovered that the spatial distribution of the young stars around these galaxies follows very closely that of their distribution of neutral hydrogen. “This is the first endeavor beyond the Local Group of galaxies to demonstrate the hierarchical galaxy assembly process on galactic scales,” said team member Dr. Sakurako Okamoto (Shanghai Astronomical Observatory). Cosmological archaeological studies such as this one help astronomers refine their understanding of galaxy formation and evolution. The currently favored cosmological galaxy models are based on the idea of hierarchical structure formation: that structures in the universe such as galaxies develop from small “overdensities” to …

  • Contrary to popular myth, ‘the pill’ prevents womb cancer, study finds

LONDON Using an oral contraceptive, often referred to as “the pill”, gives long-term protection against womb cancer and the longer it is used the greater the reduction in risk, scientists said on Wednesday. In an analysis of all available evidence, the researchers said an estimated 400,000 womb cancer cases had been prevented by use of the pill in wealthy countries the past 50 years, including some 200,000 in the last decade. “The strong protective effect of oral contraceptives against endometrial cancer – which persists for decades after stopping the pill – means that women who use it when they are in their 20s or even younger continue to benefit into their 50s and older, when cancer becomes more common,” said Valerie Beral, a professor at Britain’s Oxford University who co-led the study. “Previous research has shown that the pill also protects against ovarian cancer. People used to worry that the pill might cause cancer, but …

  • Zayn Malik And Fiancee Perrie Edwards Call Off Their Engagement

Posted on Tue Aug 4th, 2015 11:02am PDT       By X17 Staff Things in Zayn Malik’s professional and personal life are definitely in a state of upheaval. After making a shocking exit from supergroup One Direction, Zayn and his fiancee Perrie Edwards are also dunzo. Apparently the 22-year-old initiated the break up with his long time love two weeks ago, reports Us Weekly. A source close to the Little Mix member said, “She’s devastated and torn up.” A source close to Malik said in addition to splitting from 1D back in March, the singer simply wants a new beginning in all aspects of his life. The pal said, “He just wanted to move on and start over in all ways.” Interestingly enough, when Zayn left the band his relationship with Perrie was cited as a contributing factor, sites claimed that he wanted to dedicate more time to his lady love. Apparently that plan didn’t work for the …

  • Lame Massachusetts chicken to get 3-D printer prosthetic leg

BOSTON One Massachusetts chicken is about to get a costly leg up on life – a $2,500 prosthetic limb made on a 3-D printer. The chicken, named Cicely, is headed into surgery on Wednesday for the start of a first-of-its-kind procedure to fit her with an artificial limb, her owner, Andrea Martin of Black Thistle Farm, said on Monday. Cicely, 3 months old, was born with a torn tendon in her right leg that limits her mobility. When Martin took her to Tufts University’s Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine to be examined last week she was given two choices — a prosthetic or euthanasia. “It was a no-brainer,” Martin said in a phone interview. “She needs to be able to live a normal life.” Martin’s farm, located in Clinton, about 45 miles (72 km) west of Boston, specializes in chicken rehabilitation and this isn’t the first time she has splurged on surgery. One of her …
