  • 2 NY children reported missing rescued from snowbank; plow had pushed snow over

NEWBURGH, N.Y. –  Two boys who had gone out to build a snow fort were inadvertently trapped for several hours in a Newburgh, New York, snow bank when a plow operator clearing a parking lot pushed snow over them, not realizing they were there, officials said. The 11-year-old and 9-year-old children were taken to the hospital. Officials said one child was hospitalized for observation. ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT Authorities said the boys’ parents became alarmed when they didn’t come home from playing, and after a fruitless search called police around 11:50 p.m. Wednesday. Officials searching a snow bank at a health center nearby found the boys around 2 a.m. Thursday, after an officer saw a shovel half buried. The officer took the shovel and started to dig, and saw a small boot. Others joined in, some digging with bare hands, and the boys were found. They were conscious and suffering from exposure. Authorities said a snow plow …

  • Romney tops Republican poll for ’16; ahead of Clinton in election

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Mitt Romney, the Republican Party’s unsuccessful presidential nominee in 2012, leads the field for the 2016 election among Republican voters, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released on Wednesday. The former Massachusetts governor would have a slight edge over potential Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton by 45 percent to 44 percent in a general election, the poll found. Among possible Republican candidates, Romney’s 19 percent put him ahead of former Florida governor Jeb Bush with 11 percent, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and Ben Carson each with 8 percent each, and U.S. Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky with 6 percent. Carson, a former neurosurgeon with no political experience, is a conservative commentator and author of “One Nation,” which topped the New York Times best-seller list in June. U.S. Representative Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, U.S. Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee all had 5 percent, …

The doors are open. The sales are here. It’s Black Friday. Black Friday faithful are already scooping up deals at malls and department stores across America. A few stores — like Kmart and Radio Shack (RSH) — opened Thursday morning, but most — including Macy’s (M), Best Buy (BBY), Target (TGT), Kohl’s (KSS), Toys R Us, J.C. Penney (JCP) and Sears (SHLD) — waited until after Thanksgiving dinner was served. Manhattan’s bustling Times Square was packed with deal hunters — some from as far away as Sweden and Florida. “My God, it’s crazy down here!” a mother exclaimed inside Toys R Us as she trailed three children past a robotic Tyrannosaurus Rex. Nearby, a worker wearing an elf hat pumped up the crowd: “I guar-an-TEE it’s $24.95!” he crooned. ‎Walmart (WMT), the nation’s largest retailer, kicked off its sales at 6 p.m. At the chain’s location in Neptune, N.J., shoppers braved long lines in …

  • Hughes’ mourned as Australia says to launch safety review

SYDNEY (Reuters) – Australia’s cricket board will launch an “immediate” review into player safety in the wake of Phillip Hughes’ death, as the global cricket community mourned on Friday and the fate of next week’s first test against India remained in limbo. Flags flew at half-mast at cricket grounds and players left bats outside their doors in tribute to batsman Hughes, whose death in hospital on Thursday at the age of 25 shook the sport to its core and prompted a global outpouring of sympathy. Cricket Australia boss James Sutherland said the board would work with manufacturers and regulators to look into safety standards and seek improvements after Hughes was killed by a ball in a domestic match, despite wearing a helmet. “Statistics say it is clearly a freak incident, but one freak incident is one freak incident too many, so that of course puts us in a position of looking into that,” Sutherland told …

  • SA ventriloquist beats gagging order

27 November 2014 Last updated at 17:42 Conrad Koch and his puppet Chester Missing pictured earlier this month A South African ventriloquist has overturned a gagging order banning him from criticising an Afrikaner singer. Conrad Koch and his dummy appeared in court together to fight the ban. The order was imposed after Mr Koch accused singer Steve Hofmeyr of racism for tweeting: “Sorry to offend but in my books Blacks were the architects of Apartheid. Go figure.” Magistrate Naren Sewnarain said the musician had “exposed himself to criticism, satire and ridicule”. “The court is not satisfied that he should be accorded the protection,” the magistrate said. ‘Robust response’ At the height of their row that played out on Twitter last month, Mr Koch criticised businesses sponsoring the singer’s concerts. The BBC’s Pumza Fihlani in Johannesburg says Mr Hofmeyr is not a stranger to controversy and is frequently accused of racism – suggestions the singer denies. …

  • Adam West: ‘If I didn’t love Batman, I’d be a little bit strange’

Warner Bros. At 86 years of age, Adam West’s career in film and TV has spanned six decades. But if there’s one role he’ll always be best known for, it’s the eponymous Batman from the campy 1960s TV series. It’s a role that’s defined a lot of his career and one that he returns to in LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham, where he appears in a entire level that emulates the fun and feel of the TV show — complete with POW! and BAM! graphics, of course. He voices himself in each level for a hidden “Adam West in Peril” where players need to find Adam. And if that wasn’t enough, the entire original Batman series has been completely remastered for Blu-ray, with West contributing heavily to the over three hours of never-before-seen additional content. CNET spoke with Adam West about the game and this wildly enduring role. Back in 1968, did you think this …

  • Field-emission plug-and-play solution for microwave electron guns

Related images(click to enlarge) On a quest to design an alternative to the two complex approaches currently used to produce electrons within microwave electron guns, a team of researchers from Euclid TechLabs and Argonne National Laboratory’s Center for Nanoscale Materials have demonstrated a plug-and-play solution capable of operating in this high-electric-field environment with a high-quality electron beam. Unfamiliar with microwave electron guns? Perhaps best known within the realm of X-ray sources, microwave electron guns provide a higher current and much higher quality electron beams than conventional DC guns. Beams of this sort are also used in free-electron lasers, synchrotrons, linear colliders and wakefield accelerator schemes. But the electron emission mechanisms involved — laser irradiation of materials (photocathodes) and heating of materials (thermionic cathodes) — tend to be complex, bulky or extremely expensive. To simplify the process, as the team describes in Applied Physics Letters, they turned to a third electron emission mechanism — field emission …

  • Needy patients to get new hips or knees for free next week

(Reuters Health) – Excruciating hip pain forced 50-year-old Army veteran David Chalker to leave his machinist job two years ago, a decision that led to mounting debt, inability to afford health insurance and even a move into his in-laws’ home with his wife and three daughters. But his family is counting on one operation next week – entirely free of charge – to change the course of both his health and finances. The Long Island, New York resident is one of 120 patients scheduled for hip or knee replacement during the first week of December, provided by Operation Walk USA. The nonprofit organization is a coalition of 85 orthopedic surgeons in 23 states volunteering to operate on patients who do not qualify for government assistance but cannot afford surgery on their own. “I would have been in miserable pain for the next who knows how many years until I got enough money to get insurance,” …

  • Thanksgiving: Cultivate an attitude of gratitude

NATO soldiers have their Thanksgiving Day meals at the ISAF headquarters in Kabul, Afghanistan, Thursday, Nov. 27, 2014. This is the last Thanksgiving cerebration before the U.S. and NATO combat mission ends on Dec. 31 this year. (AP Photo/Rahmat Gul) If Thomas Jefferson could be faulted for one thing in composing the Declaration of Independence, it might be his inclusion of the words “the pursuit of happiness” in the text. Happiness is a vapor that cannot be grasped; a temporary feeling based on transitory circumstances akin to the euphoria of a full-on sugar rush. Happiness is good for a time, but it cannot last. Life invariably intervenes. ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT So many seem so unthankful about so much these days. Turn on the TV or read a newspaper and you will find complainers. Democrats complain about Republicans and the reverse. The poor complain about the rich and the rich complain that they are being taxed too …

  • French farmers cry wolf over sheep killings

PARIS (Reuters) – French farmers, who regularly bring livestock into Paris to punctuate their protests, drove some 250 sheep into the shadow of the Eiffel Tower on Thursday to highlight an unusual concern – that a growing wolf population is killing their flocks. Wolves were reintroduced to France in the 1990s under an international convention on wildlife conservation in Europe. There are now an estimated 300 wolves in the country and the number is growing each year. According to the French sheep organization (FNO), the number of animals they kill has risen too – by nearly two thirds since 2011 – and is likely to top 8,000 this year. “We are asking that wolves be removed from sheep breeding regions because they are incompatible with our work,” Michele Boudoin, secretary general of the French sheep organisation (FNO) said. She stressed that France’s “wolf plan”, which compensates farmers for sheep losses and pays for prevention measures …
