Memorial Day poppies and the woman who launched a movement
Every Memorial Day, when I run into the grocery store to pick up those last minute items for the three day weekend’s picnic, I’m met with members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) selling their poppies.
We cherish, too, the poppy red/ that grows on fields where valor led;
It seems to signal to the skies/that blood of heroes never dies
– “We Shall Keep the Faith” by Moina Michael
I remember as a kid that it was very common to see paper poppies being sold around Memorial Day. You could even go to the post office and purchase one [...]

NASA Inspects Ion Engine Prototype For Asteroid-Hauling Rocket
When NASA sends a rocket out to tow an asteroid into Earth orbit, it’ll be ion propelled.
Ion propulsion engines harness magnetic fields to create thrust, instead of depending on chemical explosions the way chemically fueled engines do. NASA engineers are developing such an engine for the agency’s plans to bring an asteroid into Earth’s orbit and then send astronauts there to study it. NASA Administrator Charles Bolden went to see a prototype engine yesterday at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California [...]
Google advertising under investigation in US
The US federal trade commission is investigating whether Google’s DoubleClick advertising subsidiary has illegally pushed customers to buy its other products, the Guardian has established.
The regulator is understood to be looking at whether the display advertiser, acquired by Google in 2008 for $3.1bn (£2bn), is being used to muscle clients into buying adverts on other Google advertising properties such as its text-based AdSense. That could constitute “tying”, which is illegal under antitrust law.
FTC spokesman Peter Ka [...]

Obama: Assaults hurt effectiveness
President Barack Obama said Friday that as Americans’ trust in major institutions wavers, it’s the responsibility of each person serving the country to act with integrity, even when no one else is looking.
“It’s no secret that many Americans have lost confidence in many of the institutions that have helped shape our society and our democracy,” he told the graduates of the U.S. Naval Academy during a rain-soaked speech in Annapolis, Md. “But I’m here to stress to you that institutions do not fail in a vacuum. Institutions are made up of pe [...]
