  • Four dead, several injured after plane crashes at Kansas airport

WICHITA Kan. (Reuters) – A small airplane crashed into a building at Mid-Continent Airport in Wichita, Kansas, on Thursday morning, killing at least four people, injuring five and setting off an explosion and fire, officials said. The twin-turbo airplane struck a building on the airport grounds that does pilot training and at least five people were reported missing, officials said. “I heard a big loud noise but it was muffled. I saw smoke and flames. I rushed over,” said Lana Johnson, 65, who was in a post office near the airport when the plane crashed. The pilot of the airplane, which was identified as a twin-engine turbo-prop Beechcraft King Air 200, reported losing engine power just after taking off from the airport and crashed as it tried to return, the Federal Aviation Administration said. Fire Chief Ron Blackwell said the plane appeared to strike the top of the building, sparking an intense fire. “Firefighters engaged …

  • Tim Bishop in Political Peril — Again

By Clark Mindock Posted at 5 a.m. today 0 Tweet Bishop is a Democrat from New York. (Bill Clark/ CQRollCall) Rep. Timothy H. Bishop’s re-election has once again surged to the top of the cycle’s list of most competitive House races, and Republicans are more optimistic than ever they can defeat the battle-tested New York Democrat. This cycle features a rematch between Bishop and his 2008 opponent, state Sen. Lee Zeldin, the GOP nominee. Strategists have said internal polling shows the race in a dead heat, and this week, the Rothenberg Political Report/Roll Call changed the rating of the race to Tossup. “There’s no such thing as an easy race in New York 1,” Bishop said last week in an interview. “In 2008, very few people knew [Zeldin] at all. He is more well known than he was in 2008, so to that extent, the race is different.” New York City casts a long shadow …

  • Homelessness slowly on the decline

The nation’s homeless population, and especially the number of families without shelter, continues to decline, according to a new report. An annual federal government census found about 578,000 homeless individuals nationwide, down about 2% from last year’s figure. The number of families without a roof over their heads has dropped by 53% since 2010, the report noted. About one in four homeless people is a child. The survey showed a significant decline in homelessness among veterans as well as a decrease in chronic homelessness. The Housing and Urban Development department has said it wants to eliminate homelessness for those populations by 2015. Most of the individuals included in the survey — about 70% — are in shelters or other temporary housing, HUD said. The largest decline in total homelessness from last year was in North Dakota, where homelessness had spiked in recent years. The state has grown dramatically amid an oil boom, and housing …

  • Mass graves found in western Iraq

30 October 2014 Last updated at 18:33 At least 80 bodies of Sunni Muslim tribesmen apparently killed by Islamic State militants have been found in mass graves in western Iraq. The two graves that were found in the province of Anbar may contain as many as 220 bodies. Many of the dead belong to the Al Bu Nimr tribe, which joined Iraq’s Shia-dominated government in fighting IS. The BBC’s Orla Guerin reports from Baghdad that such killings are the hallmark of IS. One of their aims is not just to capture territory but to spread fear, to spread terror into their opponents, she reports. It is clear they are trying to send a very loud message to any of the Sunni tribes who might be thinking of joining the fight against them that if they do, this can be the kind of retaliation they can expect, our correspondent says. There is a feeling among tribal …

  • Missing bitcoin cash: ‘I’m not missing,’ says Moolah CEO

The CEO of defunct bitcoin exchange Moolah insists he is working on returning money to customers, and that he has already processed almost $900,000 in refunds. Ryan Kennedy, who ran Moolah under the name Alex Green until the firm declared bankruptcy in mid-October, argues that he is not being given a fair hearing by former customers and investors. “The majority of Moolah customers were able to successfully withdraw their money from the platform,” he told the Guardian. “There is one major third-party creditor, Syscoin, that we are currently unable to process a transaction for. “I am still working on processing withdrawals, auditing the platform, and trying to figure out what has happened in full, and where funds have gone. Contrary to popular belief, I am not missing. “If I was going to run, I would not still be processing refunds (and the altcoin withdrawals are something I can easily prove on the blockchain). As I …

  • Ebola Exacerbates West Africa’s Poverty Crisis

When Ebola came to Dorcas’s home on the outskirts of Freetown in Sierra Leone, the virus spared no one. Her mother brought it home from the clinic where she worked, caring for an Ebola patient who ultimately died. Her mother, in turn, gave the virus to Dorcas’s father and older sister who had helped clean up copious vomit and diarrhea while tending to the sickened mother. Then Dorcas’s turn came, when the 17-year-old young woman transported her ailing mother and father to the hospital on the family’s motorbike.   Dorcas carried her mother into the hospital, she told peace activist Chernor Bah during his recent visit to his home country, but it was too late. She then joined her father in quarantine. There she cared for her sicker and sicker father even as she, too, succumbed to the symptoms of the viral infection. Within a few short weeks her mother died, her father died and …

  • Scientists Set Their Sights on First Whole-Eye Transplant

THURSDAY, Oct. 30, 2014 (HealthDay News) — In the world of 21st-century medicine, organ transplantation is nothing new. The first kidney transplant took place in 1950, followed by the first liver transplant in 1963 and the first human heart transplant in 1967. By 2010, doctors had even managed the transplantation of a patient’s entire face. One major organ still eludes the transplant surgeon, however: the entire human eye. But if one team of U.S. scientists has its way, that dream may become reality, too. “Until recently, eye transplants have been considered science fiction,” said Dr. Vijay Gorantla, an associate professor of surgery in the department of plastic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. “People said it was crazy, bonkers.” However, “with what we now know about transplantation and, more importantly, nerve regeneration, we are finally at the point where we can have real confidence that this is something that actually can be pursued and eventually …

  • What Halloween does for kids

Editor’s note: This commentary originally ran in Fox News Opinion on October 31, 2011. The seemingly endless wait for dark is one part of Halloween that has stayed vividly with me since childhood. Although our parents preferred we set out earlier, my older sister and I knew that walking house-to-house would be no good at dusk–there was nothing forbidden or dangerous in it. And so we would glance again and again at the sun, an intrusive guest over-staying his welcome. ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT Finally, when the neighborhood was puddles of streetlight, we would pull on our costumes and become monsters of one kind or another, rapidly growing too warm for the house, with a light sweat already under nylon gowns and rubberized masks. We took turns sneaking into each other’s room to scare and be scared. I enjoyed poking her with a plastic pitchfork and showing her gruesome wounds I had made with vampire blood from …

  • Man who vanished from Denver NFL game said he ‘had his fill of football’

DENVER (Reuters) – A man who vanished during a National Football League game in Denver last week only to be found safe days later told police afterward that he had had his “fill of football” and had wanted to go somewhere warmer, authorities said on Wednesday. Paul Kitterman made national headlines this week when his family and friends asked the public for help in finding the 53-year-old who failed to return to his seat after halftime of the Denver Broncos-San Diego Chargers game last Thursday. Kitterman was found unharmed on Tuesday night in Pueblo, Colorado, about 115 miles south of Denver, police said. Pueblo Police said in a statement that they had received a tip that Kitterman was in the area, and officers located him in the parking lot of a Kmart department store. Kitterman was fatigued but coherent when evaluated by paramedics, police said, adding that he told officers he had had “his fill …
