  • US baby gets lifetime hunting permit

Wildlife officials say that the new lifetime permit has been popular Daylen Brickley, a baby from the US state of New Hampshire, is the proud owner of a lifetime permit to hunt and fish – the first license holder under a new program. His fishing license is valid, but he will need to complete a hunter safety course before receiving that permit. His mother, Erica Brickley, is not concerned about his future training. The whole family was raised around hunting and fishing, “so I figure he’ll kind of get in the swing of things”. “It was only natural to kind of keep it going,” she told the New Hampshire Union Leader. On Tuesday officials began offering ‘The Newborn Lifetime Combination Hunting and Fishing License’ to residents under one year old. Daylen is six-months-old. Lifetime permits are available to adults as well, but for a higher price. The only negative feedback the department has received so …

  • A Brief Electoral History of Recently Indicted Congressmen

By Nathan L. Gonzales Posted at 12:12 p.m. July 30 0 Tweet It might be easy to scoff at Democratic Rep. Chaka Fattah of Pennsylvania for talking about his re-election bid on the same day he faced a 29-count indictment on corruption charges, but the most recent members of the House to be indicted held their own at the ballot box, at least initially. The last two members of the House to be indicted won their next election. After New York Republican Rep. Michael G. Grimm was indicted in 2014, I wrote about how it reminded me of one of my worst mistakes as a political handicapper and how I didn’t want to repeat it. Apparently, I’m a slow learner. Back in 2006, I assumed that after the FBI found $90,000 cash in Democratic Rep. William Jefferson’s freezer he would lose re-election. That turned out not to be true. He won the runoff election that cycle, …

  • Gun silencer sales are soaring

Gun silencer sales are on fire. The number of registered silencers surged 38% from last year to 792,282 in February 2015, according to the most recent figures from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. There were 571,750 licenses in March 2014. “It’s getting to be more mainstream,” said Josh Waldron, CEO of SilencerCo, which makes and sells silencers. Waldron said his company has nearly doubled its workforce in the past year to 215 employees and also added more machinery as it tries to work through a backlog of orders. The company, based in West Valley City, Utah, logs in record sales each month, Waldron said. Related: Gun sales spike in June Loosening state restrictions have given the industry a boost. Silencers are now legal in 41 states, compared to 37 four years ago. Also, some gun makers are making it easy to attach them. “More companies (like Smith Wesson (SWHC)) are coming out …

  • Ex-Saints pass-rusher Galette visits Redskins for physical

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) Pass rusher Junior Galette is visiting the Redskins for a physical and meetings with coach Jay Gruden and general manager Scot McCloughan after being cut by the Saints because of off-field problems. Before Washington’s first training camp practice Thursday, Gruden says ”we’ll make a determination” after speaking to Galette. Gruden says Galette ”had some issues in the past, but we like to draw our own conclusions about every individual that we bring into this building.” Galette was arrested in January after an alleged domestic dispute. Charges were dropped, but the episode remains under review by the NFL. The league also is reviewing a video which shows a man resembling Galette in a fight on a beach. — Online: AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and AP NFL Twitter feed: www.twitter.com/AP-NFL

  • Plea for help over Calais crisis

Police and social services in the UK are seeking urgent support as the Calais migrant crisis continues. The leader of Kent County Council has met Home Office officials to request help to deal with the arrival of hundreds of young migrants in Dover. And Kent Police has asked neighbouring forces to help manage Operation Stack, where lorries queue on the M20 when Channel crossings are disrupted. The PM has warned the UK will not become a “safe haven” for migrants. Speaking as hundreds of people continued their attempts to cross from France, David Cameron warned that illegal immigrants would be removed if they reached the UK. More than 3,500 attempts have been made this week to get into the Channel Tunnel, with people gathering at fencing at its freight terminal. ‘No more capacity’ Highways England said there were nearly 6,000 lorries parked on the motorway as part of Operation Stack, which will continue into the …

  • IBM’s Watson wants to make you healthier in deal with CVS Health

IBM’s Watson computer is aiming to make you healthier with a new partnership with CVS. IBM IBM has teamed up with CVS Health, the operator of thousands of drugstores across the US, in a bid to more accurately predict a person’s health troubles and provide advice. The two companies have formed a partnership that will feed IBM’s Watson “cognitive computing” computer, a machine that’s capable of understanding natural language and learning as it collects more data, with a wide range of healthcare information, including medical health records, medical claims, and pharmacy purchases, to predict a person’s risk for several deadly or debilitating diseases. Those diseases include hypertension, heart disease, diabetes and obesity. The companies have hit on a major segment of the healthcare market: People suffering from those diseases make up 86 percent of the $2.9 trillion spent each year in the US on healthcare costs. According to the companies, all of that data will …

  • Simple procedure using a nasal balloon can help treat hearing loss in children

For children with a common middle-ear problem, a simple procedure with a nasal balloon can reduce the impact of hearing loss and avoid unnecessary and ineffective use of antibiotics, according to a randomized controlled trial published in CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal). It is very common for young children to develop otitis media with effusion, also known as “glue ear,” in which the middle ear fills with thick fluid that can affect hearing development. There are frequently no symptoms, and parents often seek medical help only when hearing difficulties occur. “Unfortunately, all available medical treatments for otitis media with effusion such as antibiotics, antihistamines, decongestants and intranasal steroids are ineffective and have unwanted effects, and therefore cannot be recommended,” writes Dr. Ian Williamson, Primary Care and Population Sciences, University of Southampton, Southampton, United Kingdom, with coauthors. In 2004 in the United States, there were 2.2 million diagnosed episodes of otitis media with effusion, costing an …

  • Abbott strikes deals with heart valve replacement companies

Abbott Laboratories (ABT.N) on Thursday said it would buy a small private company and has invested in another, with an option to buy, as it places bets on the future growth potential of minimally invasive systems to replace diseased heart valves. Abbott said it has agreed to acquire the equity in Minnesota-based Tendyne Holdings Inc that it does not already own for $225 million plus future payments tied to regulatory milestones. Abbott already had a 10 percent stake in the company worth about $25 million. In a separate transaction in which financial details were not disclosed, Abbott said it has provided capital to and secured an option to purchase California-based Cephea Valve Technologies. Both private companies are developing systems to replace diseased mitral valves in the heart while sparing patients traditional chest-cracking open-heart surgery. Neither deal is expected to alter Abbott’s 2015 earnings forecast, the company said. Abbott currently sells MitraClip, a minimally invasive device …

  • Kourtney Kardashian Leans On Sisters Kendall And Kylie Amid Scott Disick Split

Posted on Thu Jul 30th, 2015 12:20pm PDT       By X17 Staff That’s what family is for! Kourtney Kardashian looked white hot last night to grab dinner at Mastro’s in Beverly Hills with younger sisters Kendall and Kylie, and although she seemed upbeat, we have a feeling she’s doing her best to hide the pain in the wake of her split with partner Scott Disick. Although we haven’t heard much from either camp about an official breakup, we have a feeling this relationship is a little too far gone to repair! Not only that, but The Lord was recently photographed making out with some blonde chick in Vegas, so it really doesn’t appear he’s bending over backwards to win Kourt back. There are reports floating around that the mother-of-three regrets leaving LD after he was caught cheating with his ex-girlfriend Chloe Bartoli in Monaco last month, but she’s probably better off single! “He really does want to …

  • Eric Shawn: The Hoffa hit, 40 years later

It all started, and ended, on this day four decades ago. It was a hot July afternoon, nearly 92 degrees, when Teamsters president and labor icon Jimmy Hoffa is said to have opened the rear door of a 1975 maroon Mercury in the parking lot of the Machus Red Fox restaurant, in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and climbed in. He was never seen again. The FBI has expended countless resources in the ensuing decades in the hopes of finally solving this enduring American mystery with no success. But I believe, based on my 2004 investigation, that Frank Sheeran did it. “Suspects Outside of Michigan: Francis Joseph “Frank” Sheeran, age 43, president local 326, Wilmington, Delaware. Resides in Philadelphia and is known associate of Russel Bufalino, La Cosa Nostra Chief, Eastern Pennsylvania,” reads the 1976 HOFFEX memo, the compilation of everything investigators knew about Hoffa’s disappearance that was prepared for a high level, secret conference at FBI …

  • Stowaway cat ‘Lucky’ to be alive in sunken boat

PHOENIX A brown and black shorthair cat now named “Lucky” is one fortunate feline after managing to survive while trapped under water for at least an hour inside a sunken powerboat in Arizona. “It’s really a miracle,” Dive Time Recovery owner Jon Zuccala, who pulled the submerged boat from a sandbar north of Lake Havasu City, told Reuters by telephone on Wednesday. “I would have named her ‘Eight’ because after all this, I’m sure she has used up one of her nine lives.” Zuccala said he was called to the scene by authorities on Saturday afternoon to hoist the boat to the shore from the lake’s bottom. The boat was then towed to his shop where a mechanic went to work the next morning to flush out the engine. “The cat just darted out when he opened up the hatch,” Zuccala said. “She was wet, scared, thirsty, but she was alive.” Lucky’s quick escape proved …
