  • The Latest: Colorado theater shooter’s father testifies in attempt to spare son’s life

CENTENNIAL, Colo. –  The latest in the sentencing phase of the Colorado theater shooting trial (all times local): 2 p.m. The father of Colorado theater shooter James Holmes is testifying as the defense tries to persuade jurors to spare his life. Robert Holmes has attended every day of his son’s trial along with his wife, Arlene, but this is the first time he has testified. The couple has not spoken publicly during the trial. Their 22-year-old daughter, Chris Holmes, was the first in the family to take the stand Monday. She said when she visited James Holmes in jail nearly two years after the attack, she no longer saw the loving brother who protected her when they were growing up. She said his whole demeanor had changed. The jury is considering whether James Holmes should serve life in prison without parole or be executed for killing 12 people and injuring 70 others at a crowded …

  • Trump adviser apologizes for ‘inarticulate’ comments on marital rape

WASHINGTON A top adviser to Donald Trump apologized on Tuesday for making “inarticulate” comments on the subject of marital rape that have ignited the latest in a series of political controversies involving the Republican presidential candidate. The comments by Michael Cohen, special counsel to the Trump Organization, were included in a Daily Beast report that said Trump’s ex-wife Ivana once used the word “rape” to describe a 1989 encounter with him. Cohen responded to the report by saying “by the very definition, you can’t rape your spouse,” the Daily Beast said. Marital rape is illegal in every U.S. state. Cohen also threatened legal action against the news outlet, saying “I will take you for every penny you still don’t have.” On Tuesday, Cohen said in a statement he was incensed by the story and made comments he did not believe. “As an attorney, husband and father there are many injustices that offend me but nothing …

  • Super Bowl 50 ads to be broadcasted and streamed

Super Bowl 50 viewers will now see every cute puppy, famous face, and Victoria’s Secret model that shows up in the big game’s famous ads… even if they’re watching online. In an unprecedented move, CBS (the network broadcasting next year’s big game) will live stream every national ad that runs during the NFL’s Super Bowl 50 on February 7 with a slight delay to when they air on TV. This means that instead of ad companies having to buy spots separately for the online streaming version and the TV version of the game, CBS is packaging the ads as one buy. This move is bound to boost the asking price and potential cost of the commercials being that more eyeballs usually means more money. It’s also a signal that networks like CBS are taking the growing numbers of online streaming seriously. For example, 114.4 million people tuned into NBC’s TV broadcast of Super Bowl XLIX …

  • Revamped Eagles hope new faces take them to top

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Chip Kelly is going to win or lose with his guys. After winning 10 games in each of his first two seasons with a roster he inherited, Kelly took control of personnel decisions and shook up the Philadelphia Eagles in a big way. Gone are quarterback Nick Foles, two-time All-Pro running back LeSean McCoy, Pro Bowl wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, two-time Pro Bowl guard Evan Mathis and several others. Kelly didn’t land Marcus Mariota, but he got 2010 No. 1 overall pick Sam Bradford to run his up-tempo offense. First, Bradford has to get on the field after missing last season following his second ACL surgery in two years. If not, Mark Sanchez provides insurance coming off his best statistical season in his first year in Kelly’s offense. All-Pro running back DeMarco Murray replaces McCoy, the franchise’s all-time leading rusher who took personal shots at Kelly on his way to Buffalo. Ryan Mathews, …

  • Burnham suggests new social care tax

Labour should ignore “difficult headlines” and consider extra taxes to cover the rising cost of social care, leadership contender Andy Burnham says. Mr Burnham says his goal of a National Health and Care service will require a “difficult financial change”. But in a speech in Leeds, he said Labour should not fear a backlash from the “Tory press”. He would create a commission which would also consider replacing tuition fees with a graduate tax system. Mr Burnham’s speech, marking the 70th anniversary of the Attlee Labour government, is seen as an effort to get back on the front foot in the leadership contest. It also included a scathing criticism of the current Labour Party, which he accused of being “frightened of its own shadow”. The Leigh MP said the anniversary of the 1945 government should be “cause for joyous celebration, but I mark it with a sad realisation that the modern Labour Party could not …

  • Heavy-metal band captchas will rock your face off

Are you tough enough to handle Metal Captcha? Screenshot by Amanda Kooser/CNET Everybody hates captchas. They’re weird little security devices that frustrate innocent Web surfers who spend precious minutes trying to unscramble garbled text and numbers just to be able to submit a form and confirm their identity as actual human beings. Not all captchas have to be annoying little monsters. They can be entertaining. All you need is the Metal Captcha service from HeavyGifts, a self-described “metal and rock fanatic creative design factory.” Real people will love it while bots will be turned away. The heavy-metal version of a captcha is sometimes even more challenging than a regular one. Metal-band logos are notoriously cryptic, the fonts are jagged and ragged and sometimes you just get a symbol. It will take a pretty knowledgeable metalhead to successfully conquer all of the Metal Captcha offerings. I’ve been sitting here running captchas for several minutes and I’m …

  • ‘Carbon sink’ detected underneath world’s deserts

The world’s deserts may be storing some of the climate-changing carbon dioxide emitted by human activities, a new study suggests. Massive aquifers underneath deserts could hold more carbon than all the plants on land, according to the new research. Humans add carbon dioxide to the atmosphere through fossil fuel combustion and deforestation. About 40 percent of this carbon stays in the atmosphere and roughly 30 percent enters the ocean, according to the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research. Scientists thought the remaining carbon was taken up by plants on land, but measurements show plants don’t absorb all of the leftover carbon. Scientists have been searching for a place on land where the additional carbon is being stored–the so-called “missing carbon sink.” The new study suggests some of this carbon may be disappearing underneath the world’s deserts – a process exacerbated by irrigation. Scientists examining the flow of water through a Chinese desert found that carbon from …

  • Skipping breakfast may be bad for diabetics

(Reuters Health) – People with type 2 diabetes who skip breakfast and fast until noon may have blood sugar spikes throughout the day, a small study suggests. When 22 patients with type 2 diabetes missed their morning meal, they had higher-than-usual surges in blood sugar after lunch and dinner, the study found. Skipping breakfast was also linked to less efficient processing of glucose by the body, or a reduced ability to convert blood sugar into energy. The researchers had expected that skipping breakfast wouldn’t be healthy. But they were surprised at the extent to which glucose metabolism suffered, simply because participants hadn’t eaten breakfast, said lead author Daniela Jakubowicz of Tel Aviv University. “This means reducing the amount of starch and sugars in lunch and dinner will have no effect on reducing elevated glucose levels if patients also skip breakfast,” she said by email. Globally, about one in 10 adults have diabetes, according to the …

  • The Other Football: Time to end unholy alliance between Qatar and Barcelona

FC Barcelona of Spain is, at present, the world’s most successful soccer team and as it wows crowds here in the U.S. on its exhibition critics are weary of its sponsorship deal with a known sponsor of terrorism. That dark-side is Barcelona’s ongoing financial relationship with the controversial Gulf state of Qatar, which shocked all in the soccer world when it beat out the U.S. bid to host the 2022 World Cup finals in a play that by all accounts was paid for by bribing other voting nations to vote for them. Barcelona’s sponsorship deal with Qatar Sports Investment started in 2011 and is reportedly worth nearly $200 million. The deal, which meant having the Qatar Foundation and now Qatar Airways on its prized shirts, is up for re-negotiation in 2016. On its present tour of the U.S., Barcelona fans are on show everywhere proudly wearing their one hundred dollar plus Qatari Airlines emblazoned Barca …

  • Fugitive-turned-actor arrested after U.S. Marshals read film write-up

SEATTLE A fugitive bank-robber-turned-actor has been arrested in Washington state after U.S. agents spotted his picture in a newspaper article about a low-budget horror film in which he plays an evil doctor, an official said on Monday. Officers on a U.S. Marshals Service fugitive task force saw Jason Stange’s picture in the Olympian newspaper’s feature last week on horror movie “Marla Mae,” said Jack Williams, chief deputy for the agency’s western district of Washington state. The officers, who had been tracking his disappearance for several months, identified him by the photo and a unique forearm tattoo, Williams said. Marshals tracked him from a filming location to a store in Olympia, where he was arrested without incident on Friday, he said. Stange was sentenced to nearly 10 years in prison and five years supervised release in 2006 after pleading guilty to armed bank robbery, Williams said. He was freed on supervised release in 2014, but had …
