Champions League proves the era of super clubs has begun | Jonathan Wilson
There are two German teams in the Champions League final. This has been, fairly obviously, a great season for German football. The national team is packed with bright young talent: Sami Khedira, Mesut Ozil, Mario Götze, Marco Reus, Toni Kroos … the German game has clearly got a lot right, from ticket pricing to youth development. But is this the beginning of an era of German domination of club football? Almost certainly not.
There was no period of Spanish hegemony after Real Madrid had beaten Valencia in the 2000 final, no period of Itali [...]
Home Tweet Home: A House with Its Own Voice on Twitter
At first glance, you’d never guess there’s anything unusual about Tom Coates’s San Francisco home. Nestled at the end of a narrow passageway on a side street, it’s a peaceful, sunny house decorated with modern furniture and bright posters that say things like “Machines help us work” and “Make your own path.”
But take a closer look at, say, the ficus tree in the corner of the living room and you’ll notice something odd: a sensor, sticking out of the dirt, that’s connected to a little box. The sensor monitors the plant’s moisture, and the [...]

Action against copyright infringing sites began with a block on The Pirate Bay
Big UK net firms have begun blocking access to two sites accused of flouting copyright laws.
The blocks were imposed after the Motion Picture Association (MPA) won a court order compelling ISPs to cut off the Movie2K and Download4All websites.
However, pro-piracy activists have set up a copy of the Movie2K website in a bid to get around the restrictions.
The action come as a music industry group publishes a [...]

Guatemala’s top court has thrown out the conviction for genocide and crimes against humanity of former military leader Efrain Rios Montt.
The constitutional court ruled that the trial should restart from the point where it stood on 19 April.

How Tesla’s rivals support Tesla
A Tesla Model S at a company-installed charging station along I-95 in Delaware.
Upstart electric car maker Tesla Motors is receiving a huge windfall from an unlikely source: competing automakers.
The company is bringing in millions of dollars by selling credits from California and 10 other states for selling electric vehicles.
Buying the credits are automakers that are concerned they won’t able to meet tough new environmental regulations requiring that more than 15% of sales in the 11 states be zero-emissions vehicles by 2025 [...]
Novice hurdlers stand out in 2012-13 Anglo-Irish Jumps Classifications
Jump racing has a collection of potential new star steeplechasers to sustain it in the post-Kauto Star era, according to ratings published on Tuesday. The sport can also take pleasure in a fine crop of novice hurdlers, promising high-quality action in the years to come.
The news comes from the 14th annual Anglo-Irish Jumps Classifications, which offer handicap marks for the best horses that took part in the recently completed jumps season. Top of the heap is, of course, Sprinter Sacre, whose mark of 188 has been bettered only once in the [...]
The wonderfully weird world of webcomics | Dean Burnett
Webcomics are increasingly widespread and popular. It could be argued their proliferation is linked to the decline of print comics, in the same way that free news sites and blogging are often blamed for the decline in newspapers. Webcomics don’t get nearly as much mainstream publicity though (at least none that I’ve seen). Even the more popular examples like XKCD seemingly go largely unmentioned in other media formats, despite their considerable success.
Webcomics are interesting from a scientific perspective. They rely on bot [...]
