His guests over the years included Bing Crosby, Marilyn Monroe and Madonna. Franklin played himself in films like Manhattan and Ghostbusters but said he only became a star when Billy Crystal parodied him on Saturday Night Live. • Several Ohio Democrats Considering Senate Primary

By Alexis Levinson Posted at 1:31 p.m. on Jan. 23 0 Tweet Portman is a Republican from Ohio. (CQ Roll Call File Photo) Ohio Democrats are expecting a crowded primary to challenge Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, in 2016, and the recent announcement by Cincinnati City Councilman P.G. Sittenfeld may have accelerated its formation. The 30-year-old Sittenfeld announced Thursday that he would get into the race. Democrats describe him as a charismatic and a rising star within the party, but his early announcement speaks to the fact that this local office holder has hurdles to raise his name recognition and ample cash for a federal race. And other Democratic candidates won’t let him do that for too long without any competition. “It’s the starting gun for sure,” said Ohio Democratic strategist Steve Fought. “They can’t let anybody out there unimpeded in clear water.” There are a number of contenders who have expressed interest. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, …

The market has swung wildly up and down since the start of the year. At this point, the Nasdaq is slightly positive, while the Dow and SP 500 are down. But investors may finally pick a direction. Memphis, TN (SportsNetwork.com) – Zach Randolph registered 17 points with 14 rebounds to help the Memphis Grizzlies in a 101-83 win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday night. Jeff Green led the Grizzlies with 18 points and Vince Carter added 13 points off the bench. Memphis, which defeated the Sixers 120-115 in overtime on Dec. 13, has taken five straight against them in the series. “Honestly I don’t think we dominated that much,” Grizzlies center Marc Gasol said. “I felt that we could have done a better job.” Jerami Grant deposited a career-high 16 points and Michael Carter-Williams posted 10 points with six assists for Philadelphia, which has dropped five straight games overall. The Sixers held a brief lead in the first quarter until Jeff Green kicked off a 12-2 run for Memphis with a three-point play. Tony Allen capped the spurt to give the Grizzlies a 20-15 lead. • What can we learn from Facebook’s annual Bullshit Report?

Last week was Davos week, the time of year when 2,900 movers and shakers (only 17% of whom are women, incidentally) congregate in a small town in Switzerland to talk the talk. It also means that it’s the week in which Facebook issues its annual Bullshit Report, claiming that it is not only a Force for Good but also one of the world’s economic powerhouses. In 2012 the report claimed that Facebook – an outfit which then had a global workforce of about 3,000 – had indirectly helped create 232,000 jobs in Europe in 2011 and “enabled” more than $32bn in revenues. Now, two years on, Facebook has more than 1.3 billion users, and its claims have become correspondingly more extravagant. This year’s Bullshit Report asserts that in the year ending October 2014 the company’s “global economic impact” amounted to $227bn – which is roughly equal to the gross domestic product of Portugal – and …

  • Exotic, gigantic molecules fit inside each other like Russian nesting dolls

Related images(click to enlarge) University of Chicago scientists have experimentally observed for the first time a phenomenon in ultracold, three-atom molecules predicted by Russian theoretical physicsist Vitaly Efimov in 1970. In this quantum phenomenon, called geometric scaling, the triatomic molecules fit inside one another like an infinitely large set of Russian nesting dolls. “This is a new rule in chemistry that molecular sizes can follow a geometric series, like 1, 2, 4, 8…,” said Cheng Chin, professor in physics at UChicago. “In our case, we find three molecular states in this sequence where one molecular state is always 4.88 times larger than the previous one.” Chin and four members of his research group published their findings Dec. 9, 2014, in Physical Review Letters. “Quantum theory makes the existence of these gigantic molecules inevitiable, provided proper — and quite challenging — conditions are created,” said Efimov, now at the University of Washington. The UChicago team observed …

  • Pediatrician group urges measles vaccinations amid Disneyland outbreak

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – The leading U.S. pediatrician group on Friday urged parents, schools and communities to vaccinate children against measles in the face of an outbreak that began at Disneyland in California in December and has spread to more than 50 people. The American Academy of Pediatrics said all children should get the vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella between the ages of 12 and 15 months old and again between 4 and 6 years old. “A family vacation to an amusement park – or a trip to the grocery store, a football game or school – should not result in children becoming sickened by an almost 100 percent preventable disease,” Errol Alden, the group’s executive director, said in a statement. “We are fortunate to have an incredibly effective tool that can prevent our children from suffering. That is so rare in medicine,” Alden said. The California Department of Public Health has reported 59 …

  • Diplo claims to know Taylor Swift’s secrets, ‘scared for his life’

Speaking with GQ magazine, the DJ said that public feud, which was started by a rather silly (but funny) tweet and later defended by Swift’s bestie, Lorde, was sort of taken out of context. He’s actually close friends with Lorde, so Diplo explained “it was such a tongue-in-cheek joke on both sides.” Diplo told the magazine the joke went too far, and that he ultimately understands how powerful a star of Swift’s magnitude is. “Taylor Swift is very strategic with her friends and enemies. And I know lots of secrets,” he confessed. “I can’t divulge, but I know a lot of stuff about her. And I’m scared. I’m scared for my life.” More: Lorde fans are now gathering funds to get Diplo a penis While Diplo won’t be divulging any of Swift’s juicy stuff right now, it seemed like he’s going to try and stay away from her fans, too. Aside from calling them “the worst …

  • When will Obama stop making false claims about Citizens United?

FILE — Jan. 22, 2015: President Obama speaks during a visit to the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas. (AP Photo/Charlie Riedel) At almost the same time that protesters mad about the Citizens United decision were disrupting the start of the Supreme Court’s session on Wednesday, the White House issued a “Statement from the President” condemning the decision on its fifth anniversary. And once again, President Obama repeated the same false claim about “foreign corporations” that he made in his State of the Union speech back in 2010. This White House seems to believe that if you think up a good political attack theme, stick with it no matter what the truth is. One can certainly debate the effect of Citizens United, which lifted the ban on independent political expenditures (i.e., independent political speech), and whether it has been beneficial to our democratic system. As a former member of the Federal Election Commission that enforces our …

  • Iowa billboard mannequin startles motorists, loses job

(Reuters) – A car dealer is taking down an oversized mannequin that had been placed atop a roadside billboard advertisement in rural Iowa after a number of alarmed drivers called the 911 emergency number to report a man who looked like he was going to jump. “I hate to take it down, but in the interest of public safety I decided to,” Brad Deery, owner of 10 car dealerships in Iowa, told Reuters by telephone on Friday. Deery said the sheriff in Des Moines County asked him to remove the mannequin because drivers were becoming distracted and that some could be tempted to try to climb the sign and take a selfie. The billboard on U.S. Route 61 advertises Deery’s West Burlington dealership. The sign reads “I can see Deery Toyota, Nissan, Mazda from here,” Deery said. The mannequin is posed as though it is looking off at distant car lots. The Hawk Eye, a …
