  • 6 Unusual Habits of Exceptionally Creative People

I expend a huge amount of my time and energy writing books and articles and working to keep my company innovative. I’ve developed an obsession with some of history’s most creative minds in the hope that I might learn some tricks to expand my own creative productivity. Some of the things I’ve learned are more useful than others, and some are simply too weird to try. Steve Jobs, for example, routinely sat on toilets, dangling his bare feet in the water while he came up with new ideas, and Yoshiro Nakamatsu (inventor of the floppy disc) would dive deep under water until his brain was deprived of oxygen, then write his ideas on an underwater sticky pad. Weird ideas aside, I’ve developed a pretty good understanding of the habits of some of history’s most creative minds. There’s enough commonality between different people that I’ve distilled their habits into strategies that anyone can follow. Related: How …

  • Internal Poll Shows Cresent Hardy Leading Potential Challengers

By Emily Cahn Posted at 5 a.m. today 0 Tweet Hardy is one of the most vulnerable Republicans in the House. (Bill Clark/CQ Roll Call File Photo) Rep. Cresent Hardy, R-Nev., leads all four of the potential Democratic opponents in head-to-head matchups for his 4th District seat, an internal poll conducted for his campaign and obtained by CQ Roll Call shows. Hardy — who is arguably the most vulnerable House Republican in 2016 — has the slimmest lead over former state Assemblywoman Lucy Flores. In that matchup, Hardy garnered 36 percent to Flores’ 35 percent, with 22 percent undecided. Against the rest of his potential opponents in the crowded Democratic primary, Hardy holds double-digit leads but never receives more than 39 percent of the vote. That could be problematic for the freshman Republican in a district that President Barack Obama carried by an 11-point margin in 2012. Against state Sen. Ruben Kihuen, Hardy garnered 38 percent to Kihuen’s 28 percent, …

  • Everything you want to know about Donald Trump’s bankruptcies

Donald Trump brags about how well his businesses have fared in bankruptcy. And in fact, no major U.S. company has filed for Chapter 11 more than Trump’s casino empire in the last 30 years. “I have used the laws of this country … the [bankruptcy] chapter laws, to do a great job for my company, for myself, for my employees, for my family,” he said during the first Republican presidential debate on August 6. Trump claims that successful businesses file for bankruptcy all the time. At the debate he said “virtually every person that you read about on the front page of the business sections, they’ve used the [bankruptcy] law.” But the facts don’t back that comment up. Despite high profile examples, including General Motors (GM), Lehman Brothers and most of the nation’s major airlines, fewer than 20% of public companies with assets of $1 billion or more have filed for bankruptcy in the last …

Digital music service Tidal has accused Apple of blocking it from streaming video of a charity-festival set by rapper Drake, but the star’s manager has retaliated by accusing the service of a “publicity stunt”. • Cold weather associated with higher risk of severe heart attack

30 Aug 2015: Cold weather is associated with a higher risk of severe heart attack, according to research presented at ESC Congress today by Dr Shuangbo Liu, adult cardiology resident at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada.1 The six year study found that each 10°C drop in temperature was associated with a 7% increased risk of ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), the most severe form of heart attack. “We studied the effects of temperature on the risk of heart attacks in Winnipeg, Canada, one of the coldest large cities in the world,” said Dr Liu. “We demonstrated that there is a clear relationship between daily temperature and the risk of STEMI. This risk can be predicted up to two days before the actual heart attack. Increased public awareness and reallocation of resources may help us to respond to this predictable seasonal risk of heart attacks in the future.” Winnipeg, a city of approximately 700 000 …

  • Asterias’s stem cell therapy shows promise in study

Asterias Biotherapeutics Inc said initial data from a small study showed that its lead stem cell therapy could improve mobility in patients paralyzed by a spinal cord injury. The therapy, AST OPC-1, is the first product derived from human embryos to be tested on humans. Its success is a key step toward proving that embryonic stem cell research could cure diseases such as cancer, Parkinson’s and serious health conditions such immune deficiencies, stroke and spinal injuries. Data showed that the severity of the spinal injury was reduced in the first patient and two other patients were able to resume their rehabilitation programs soon after being injected with the stem cells. The early study tested the benefits of a smaller dose of 2 million stem cells that are tuned to develop into nerves. Asterias bought OPC-1 in 2013 from the erstwhile stem cell research leader Geron Corp, which decided to focus on developing cancer drugs. Geron …

  • Christians, Martin Luther King and race: What we must do now

Armed with a handful of warmed-over sermons and big dreams to grow a small church, the newly ordained Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. arrived at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama in May of 1954. According to biographer Richard Lischer, King came to Dexter with a 39-point plan. Included in King’s plan was the purchase of a new pulpit. The two pulpits the church owned – one in the sanctuary and the other in the basement for use in Sunday School – had virtually been there since the last brick was laid at Dexter in 1889. Within a year of arriving, King was the recognized leader of America’s protest for civil rights. Soon, America was marching for change. King had become more than the pastor at Dexter, but he never stopped preaching. In fact, he believed the church was the center for necessary, creative, loving change. The rhetoric that soared at state houses …

  • Trump says ‘no interest’ in buying Pope’s favorite soccer team

BUENOS AIRES U.S. presidential hopeful Donald Trump denied a newspaper report on Friday that he wanted to buy top-tier Argentine soccer club San Lorenzo, Pope Francis’ favorite team. “Never even heard of the team – no interest!” the real estate magnate and contender for the Republican presidential nomination, tweeted after the New York Post reported that Trump and an associate had sent a letter to San Lorenzo expressing interest in a deal. Earlier in the day, the club’s vice president, Marcelo Tinelli, told Reuters in a text message that the story was “totally crazy” and that the team was not for sale. Pope Francis grew up near San Lorenzo’s original stadium in Buenos Aires and has been a fan ever since. San Lorenzo is one of the top five clubs in soccer-obsessed Argentina. Whether through soccer, the biggest sport in Latin America, or by other means, Trump might benefit from some connection with Latino voters …
