Michael Laudrup reacts to Swansea’s draw with Hull City. Danny Graham had not scored for two clubs in 11 months since leaving Swansea last January but the immutable law of the ex struck at the Liberty Stadium on Monday night when he gave Hull an early lead, only for his former team-mates to claim a point with an involuntary, contentious equaliser from Chico Flores. Graham endured a barren spell with Sunderland after joining them from the Swans for £3m and had been firing blanks for Hull, who have him on loan, un [...]
Not content with attempting to dominate men’s football, Manchester City are busy parking their tanks on the lawns of the women’s game. All the indications are that once City Ladies enter England’s revamped Women’s Super League at the start of the new season in April, Arsenal’s era of dominance could be curtailed. Already City have signed a quartet of leading England internationals in Steph Houghton, Jill Scott, Karen Bardsley and Toni Duggan, but such an impressive commitment to the women’s game at the [...]
New Portsmouth manager Richie Barker says he is confident he can turn things around at the troubled League Two club. Pompey are 17th in the table, having suffered two successive relegations. They sacked Guy Whittingham after a string of poor results but Barker says he can help rebuild the club along with director of football Steve Coppell. “There is no glass ceiling and if this place gets rolling it can keep going,” Barker told BBC Sport. “It’s how far I can take it.” [...]
Barcelona‘s board of directors will make a decision in January on whether to expand the Camp Nou or submit plans to move to a new stadium. The Spanish champions have commissioned a report over the viability of both projects with the objective to increase the capacity of their home ground to 105,000. Although progress was made at a meeting on Monday, the Barça directors will not announce their preferred option until early in 2014. A board spokesman Toni Freixa explained on the club’s official website it had two choices: “ [...]
It took the police 14 days to register the rape allegation and a further 30 days to make an arrest, by which time the victim had killed herself. The awful case of a 17-year-old kidnapped from her small village in India and raped by two men in a field during Diwali’s November celebrations emerged only after last year’s horrific gang rape of another student in Delhi on 16 December 2012 sparked international outrage. The 23-year-old student was travelling home from the cinema with a friend when she was viciously attacked by six m [...]
Rescuers are searching for two adults and four young children in remote north-western Nevada a day after they were last seen near an abandoned mining camp where they had gone to play in the snow. The couple had taken their two children and niece and nephew, aged from three to 10, on an outing to an old mining camp in the Seven Troughs mountain range, local authorities said, as a deadly winter storm keeps a tight grip on much of the US. Cold, snow and ice spread across the east coast on Monday, snarling traffic and knocking out power to th [...]
On Monday, Trenton Oldfield won his appeal against Theresa May’s decision to deport him to Australia after he carried out a direct action protest against elitism at the Oxford Cambridge boat race in 2012. The home secretary had deemed Oldfield’s presence in the UK to be “undesirable” and “not conducive to the public good” after he was convicted of causing a public nuisance when he swam into the Thames and disrupted the boat race last year. Oldfield’s win is not only a victory for the right to prot [...]
The founder of a French breast implant company has been sentenced to four years in prison by a Marseille court for hiding the true nature of the substandard silicone used in implants sold to 300,000 women around the world. The sentencing against Jean-Claude Mas, 74, founder and long-time chief executive of Poly Implant Prothese (PIP), capped a scandal that fuelled worldwide panic in 2011 after France recommended that women with such implants have them removed due to an abnormally high rupture rate.
Former England international Alan Shearer says there needs to be a ‘zero tolerance’ policy to anyone found guilty of fixing in football matches. Six people were arrested on Sunday over fixing allegations in the sport and have been bailed until April. “You are never going to stop betting but you have to stop the people inside,” Shearer told BBC Radio 5 live. “It just cannot happen. If anyone is found guilty then there should be zero tolerance.” More to follow.
Guy Kawasaki speaking at LeWeb 2013 (Credit: Stephen Shankland/CNET) PARIS — It may be gauche, but Guy Kawasaki tweets the same tweet four times a day and thinks you should, too. Sending out the same tweet multiple times simply ensures that your message is more likely to be received, even if it ruffles feathers, he said at the LeWeb conference here. “You will piss some people off from this, I grant you that,” said Kawasaki, the consultant, investor, and former Apple evangelist said. “But on social media, if [...]
Outbreaks of looting have spread across Argentina as mobs take advantage of strikes by police demanding pay raises to match inflation. Videos show people shattering glass doors and stealing everything from mattresses and mobile phones to prams and beer. By Monday night, the death toll from the riots had reached five as officers protested outside negotiating sessions, citizens secured themselves in their homes and businesses, and federal troops were deployed to trouble spots. The trouble spread to at least 19 of Argentina’s 23 provin [...]
Two international press groups are calling for a full investigation into the death of Honduran journalist Juan Carlos Argenal Medina, who was found shot to death at his home in the southeastern city of Danli. The Committee to Protect Journalists and Journalists Without Borders say Argenal was a correspondent for Radio y TV Globo, which has come under attack for its opposition to the 2009 coup that deposed President Manuel Zelaya. Zelaya’s wife, Xiomara Castro, lost the 24 November presidential election and is contesting the results. [...]
