  • Authorities search Indiana home of Subway pitchman Jared Fogle

ZIONSVILLE, Ind. Authorities searched the Indiana home of Subway sandwich chain pitchman Jared Fogle on Tuesday, about two months after the executive director of his foundation was arrested on federal child pornography charges. Fogle, well known from his appearances on Subway television commercials, was seen for a time outside his home in Zionsville, a suburb northwest of Indianapolis, as law enforcement agents removed electronics from the house, local news outlet WTHR reported. Fogle left his home in the upscale neighborhood around midday as the search continued, according to local media. It was not clear whether Fogle, a father of two, is a target of what authorities have said is a joint investigation by local, state and federal law enforcement officials. Officials declined to comment about the activity at Fogle’s home. Fogle’s attorney said Fogle has not been detained or arrested or charged “with any crime or offense.” “Jared has been cooperating, and continues to cooperate, …

  • Tech Consultant to Run Against Republican Sean Duffy

By Eli Yokley Posted at 2:04 p.m. today 0 Tweet A Wisconsin tech consultant and who has appeared on stage says he will challenge Duffy. (Tom Williams/CQ Roll Call File Photo) Democrat Kirk Bangstad, a Wisconsin entertainer and consultant who has worked with some of the country’s largest tech companies, announced Tuesday he will challenge Republican Rep. Sean P. Duffy in the state’s 7th District. Like other candidates who have never held elected office, Bangstad said his message will be simple: “Washington is broken, and it will take someone who has not been there to fix it.” “The constant partisan bickering and gridlock have hurt our country and left Wisconsin families behind,” Bangstad said in a statement. “I’m running for Congress because I think my background in helping companies expand their workforce and create jobs is a perspective that Washington needs now more than ever.” In the business world, Bangstad has worked with companies such as Google, Oracle and Microsoft. • China fears crash into gold, copper markets

The crumbling Chinese stock market is crashing into the global metals market. Copper plummeted to six-year lows and gold took its biggest hit in nearly two months on Tuesday as alarms continue to sound about China’s health. At first glance, it may not make sense for trouble in China to impact precious and industrial metals. But it’s important to remember how turbulence in one asset class can cause trouble in another. Chaos has gripped Chinese stocks in recent weeks, sending the previously red-hot market nose diving 25%. The ferocious selling has forced investors who bought stocks with borrowed money to pay back loans by dumping other assets — including gold and other commodities. “When there is panic in the market, people need to liquidate whatever they can liquidate. You can have these spillover effects,” said Axel Merk, president and chief investment officer of Merk Investments. Related: Bargain hunting in the Chinese stock rubble The panic …

  • Greece given new debt plan deadline

Greek banks remain shut, with controls on cash machine withdrawals The eurozone has given Greece until Thursday to present new proposals to secure a deal with creditors, and has called a full EU summit for Sunday. The moves came after an emergency eurozone leaders’ summit in Brussels. The eurozone had asked Greece to submit fresh plans after its voters rejected a draft bailout in a referendum. But Greece brought no written plans, suggesting instead a few changes to an earlier draft, which would respect “the mandate of the referendum”. On Sunday a meeting of all 28 members of the European Union will be held. European Council President Donald Tusk said that this was perhaps the “most critical moment in the history of the eurozone”. “The final deadline ends this week,” he said. • Reddit’s fate hangs in the balance as revolt against CEO makes waves

Reddit, the giant online discussion forum for everyone from political junkies to billiards enthusiasts, is in revolt. Over 10 years, Reddit – which styles itself as the “front page of the internet” – has built a site that attracts 164 million readers a month. Last week, however, its users mounted an open insurrection against the California-based company’s interim CEO, Ellen Pao, following what they say have been a series of unpopular decisions by management that directly contradict the open, democratic style of discussion that Reddit has previously encouraged. And despite the company issuing an apology on the site on Monday, a petition calling for Pao to step down now boasts more than 200,000 signatures. Related: Reddit CEO sorry for ‘letting down’ users after popular subforums shut down Redditors – as users are called – have accused the site of increasingly trying to monetize its popularity, and it appears their sentiments came to a head last …

  • Yes, AT&T, it pays to win back lost customers

The competition for customers in the service sector is fierce, and new customers are entering the market all the time. So when a company such as Time Warner, Travelocity, or ATT loses a customer, is it worth it to try to win that customer back? Yes, says a new study in the Journal of Marketing. “Our results show that lost customers, if won back, can be profitable to a company and that so-called win-back initiatives are worth the time and effort,” write V. Kumar (Georgia State University), Yashoda Bhagwat , and Xi (Alan) Zhang (both Georgia State University). “In particular, customers who leave because they were unhappy with the service provided–as opposed to, say, the prices being charged–and who are won back with a service upgrade can be good for a company’s bottom line.” The study examines the interplay of a mix of issues involved in regaining lost customers. It looks at the relationship between …

  • Young adults see cost as disadvantage of health insurance

(Reuters Health) – While many young adults are concerned about the cost of health insurance, they often don’t understand how out-of-pocket costs for care can add up, a small study suggests. These adults, mostly in their 20s, see access to preventive or primary care as the biggest advantage of insurance, and the financial strain of paying for coverage as the main disadvantage, the study found. Despite their price concerns, however, nearly half of them couldn’t define “deductible,” the amount they need to pay before insurance will pick up the bill. And 78 percent of them incorrectly defined “co-insurance,” the portion of costs they need to pay after the deductible has been met. “Their confusion over these basic terms can have real consequences on their cost exposure down the road,” said lead researcher Dr. Charlene Wong of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania, in an email. From January to March 2014, Wong …

  • Sarah Jessica Parker is not a feminist for a really good reason

And after hearing her explanation, I might not be, either! The Sex and the City star appears on the cover of Cosmopolitan‘s August issue. In her interview, Parker waxed poetic about being a human and being a feminist and what all that means in a society like we have today. She said, in all her wisdom and glory, “As Wendy Wasserstein would say, ‘I’m a humanist.’ I’m enormously appreciative of the work that my mother’s generation did. We are the beneficiaries of a lot of disappointment, heartache, discouragement and misunderstanding. But I see a lot of people trying to sort out their roles. People of color, gays, lesbians and transgenders [sic] who are carving out this space.” More: Sarah Jessica Parker wants all women to be comfortable in their own skin (VIDEO) What Parker is saying is that there are lots of types of humans all trying to “carve out” their own space in this …

  • Why are we treating Iran as a great power?

Tuesday, negotiators extended yet another deadline to sign a deal with Iran and its nuclear program.  The negotiations focus on the well known problematic issues such as sanctions relief, inspection of military facilities, nuclear history, number of allowable centrifuges, reduction of nuclear fuel and keeping nuclear facilities. But, there is a core problem that many have ignored or downplayed: what are the long-term consequences of the great powers of the world treating the Islamic Republic of Iran as if it were a major world power — which it manifestly is not?     If we look at the history of serious and important international negotiations, they have been in recent times for the most part conducted among major world powers. We think of the American SALT nuclear negotiations with the Soviet superpower in the 1970s. We remember the 1938 Munich conference with Great Britain, France, Italy and Germany present, Czechoslovakia absent and future great powers …

  • Sex on a Florida beach leads to two-and-a-half years prison time

TAMPA, Fla. A man convicted of having sex on a public beach in Florida in front of a child was sentenced on Monday to 2-1/2 years in prison, a state prosecutor said. Jose Caballero, 40, was arrested in Bradenton Beach in west central Florida last July after other beachgoers complained that he was fondling and starting to have sexual intercourse with a woman on the beach in the middle of the afternoon. A 4-year-old child saw the activity, which was videotaped by a witness, a police report said. When her mother asked him to stop, Caballero responded confrontationally, which factored into the sentence requested, said Assistant State Attorney Anthony Dafonseca. “His judgment was pretty poor,” Dafonseca said. Caballero, who previously served about eight years in prison for cocaine trafficking, faced as much as 15 years in prison. His attorney could not immediately be reached for comment. Both he and the woman involved, 21-year-old Elissa Alvarez, …
