  • Kasich, Christie make the cut for prime-time Republican debate

WASHINGTON Republican Governors Chris Christie and John Kasich on Tuesday grabbed the last spots on stage next to front-runner Donald Trump and seven others in the first prime-time presidential debate, winning a potentially valuable head start in exposure. Former Texas Governor Rick Perry, former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum and five others in the crowded 2016 Republican field were left out of Thursday’s televised 9 p.m. EDT debate by host Fox News, which invited the top 10 candidates in an average of five recent opinion polls. The leftover candidates will appear in a separate forum outside of the spotlight at 5 p.m. EDT on Thursday, leaving them fighting to win attention and prove to voters and donors they have a legitimate shot at the nomination. At center stage in prime time will be Trump, the real estate mogul who has shot to the top of Republican polls, flanked by former Florida Governor Jeb Bush and Wisconsin …

  • The most popular excuses to get an upgrade to first class

Virgin’s Richard Branson Claiming that you’re buddies with Richard Branson isn’t going to get you a free upgrade on a Virgin flight. The cabin crew has heard that one before. In fact, they hear it all the time. Virgin Atlantic surveyed its cabin and ground crews about the most frequent excuses they hear from passengers seeking free upgrades to first class. They said that a fictional friendship with Branson, the billionaire founder of the Virgin Group conglomerate, is a “popular tactic.” “Sir Richard Branson is my friend and Sir Richard Branson promised me an upgrade were the two most common reasons passengers gave when requesting a complimentary upgrade to upper class suite,” said Virgin Atlantic. The other most-overused attempts mention birthdays and honeymoons. Also, tall passengers often plead for the extra leg room they say they need first class. The airline staffers highlighted their favorite excuses, which are weird enough to deserve special mention: “My …

  • Jimmy Butler, LaMarcus Aldridge, Victor Oladipo talk up Jordan Brand’s Super.Fly 4

The latest edition of Jordan Brand’s high-performance sneakers hits retailers on Wednesday, but a few of the athletes on the brand’s roster have already had access to the Super.Fly 4 for the past few weeks. And they’re giving it rave reviews. Now of course, Jimmy Butler, LaMarcus Aldridge and Victor Oladipo are all paid endorsers. But there’s a wide variety of shoes that are available to them to play in, and the Super.Fly 4 is the current weapon of choice for all three players. “I think that shoe is amazing,” Aldridge said recently, at Jordan Brand’s “First to Fly” event in Las Vegas. “It’s light, it gives me great support. I had the older ones on last year, I loved those, they were very comfortable. I think (the 4s) are even better, this year’s.” And how does this version differ from the last? “Definitely more ankle support,” Aldridge said. “I thought the last ones were …

  • FBI examining the security of Hillary Clinton’s private email account – report

The FBI has begun looking into the security of Hillary Clinton’s private email setup, contacting in the past week a Denver-based technology firm that helped manage the unusual system, the Washington Post has reported, citing two government officials. Related: ‘So revealing and wacky': Hillary Clinton emails deride David Cameron The FBI also contacted Clinton’s lawyer, David Kendall, with questions about the security of a thumb drive in his possession that contains copies of work emails Clinton sent during her time as secretary of state, the Post said. Kendall said in a statement: “The government is seeking assurance about the storage of those materials. We are actively cooperating.” Clinton’s use of her private email account linked to a server in her New York home for her work as America’s top diplomat came to light in March and drew fire from political opponents who accused the Democratic presidential candidate of sidestepping transparency and record-keeping laws. • Astronomers Gather in Hawaii Amid Controversy over Giant Telescope

HONOLULU—The mood is different this year at the General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union (IAU), the largest gathering of astronomers, which meets every three years. Amid the usual scientific posters and talks on the history of the solar system and galaxy formation here at the Hawaii Convention Center are alert sentries at every entrance diligently screening for protesters. The normally benign field of astronomy finds itself embroiled in controversy around the planned construction of one of the world’s most powerful telescopes on the peak of Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano with ideal conditions for observation that is also a sacred place to Native Hawaiians. The intended facility, called the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) after its gargantuan primary mirror’s size, would be the 13th observatory on Mauna Kea and by far the largest. Protesters see construction on the mountain as the desecration of a holy place that has long held meaning for Hawaiians. They object …

  • Spicing Up Your Meals Might Extend Your Life

TUESDAY, Aug. 4, 2015 (HealthDay News) — Some like it hot, and a new study finds that folks who favor spicy foods might also have a lower risk of premature death. The study was based on a large multi-year food analysis. It found that adults who reported eating spicy foods — such as fresh and dried chili pepper — as little as three days per week were less likely to die during the study period than those who consumed such foods less than once a week. “The finding is very simple,” said study lead author Dr. Lu Qi, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston. “If you eat more spicy food, it’s better for your health and lowers the risk for mortality, especially as it relates to cancer and heart disease.” However, the study authors cautioned that their investigation was not able to draw a direct cause-and-effect link between the consumption …

  • Republican debate: What establishment candidates must accomplish Thursday night

As the leading Republican candidates prepare to square off in their first debate, one thing has become clear: Americans are dissatisfied. The ascent of real estate mogul Donald Trump and Socialist Bernie Sanders testifies to serious doubts about establishment politicians. Hillary Clinton’s video announcing her candidacy hit all the buttons — jobs, fairness, education, and gender — necessary to hold together the majority that twice delivered President Obama to the White House. But a recent CNN poll indicates the majority of Americans want the next president to change most of President Obama’s policies. Still voters don’t want a return to the days of President Bush and have expressed their frustration with both presidents by indicating preferences for Trump and Sanders despite their extreme views. The two men advocate very opposite visions — less vs. more government in markets and social institutions — but address frustrations emerging from common roots — an economy that not delivering …

  • Three times lucky as Kerry swaps crutches for Kennedy clan cane

KUALA LUMPUR U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Wednesday swapped the crutches he has been on since breaking his leg in a cycling accident in May for a silver-handled cane that served successive members of the Kennedy clan, including former president John Kennedy and his father Joseph. Kerry appeared with the cane at meetings with countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in Malaysia. He said it had been loaned to him by Vicki Kennedy, widow of Senator Teddy Kennedy. “This cane has a history,” Kerry joked at the start of one meeting in Kuala Lumpur. “This cane belonged to Ambassador Joseph B. Kennedy in England during the war. And after the war, President Kennedy, before he became president, used this cane when his back was bad after the war,” he said. “And then Teddy Kennedy, who broke his back, used the cane,” Kerry said, adding that Teddy Kennedy had loaned him the …
