  • Suspicious package left at New York bus station contained 1,000 condoms

NEW YORK –  Police say a suspicious package left behind a concrete barrier of a New York City bus station didn’t contain any explosives but did have some unexpected contents — 1,000 individually packaged condoms for both men and women. A spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police said Saturday that a canine unit was called Friday evening to the George Washington Bridge Bus Station. ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT Spokesman Joe Pentangelo says investigators with the help of the dogs checked out a silver messenger-style satchel that was left in the under-construction Manhattan depot. He says they cleared the bag of any explosives then looked inside to find condoms of multiple brands and styles. He says no one has come forward to claim the bag and its contents.

  • Obama’s budget proposals include 19 percent tax on foreign earnings: Bloomberg

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama’s budget proposals will include a minimum tax of 19 percent on U.S.-based companies’ future foreign earnings and a 14 percent tax on their stockpiled offshore profits, Bloomberg news said on Saturday, citing two people familiar with the budget. The planned taxes are part of a $3.99 trillion budget plan that will be rolled out on Monday and is designed to help middle class and poorer Americans by increasing taxes on the wealthiest, Bloomberg reported. It said the new proposals would be part of a larger effort to overhaul the U.S. tax code and lower the current corporate rate from 35 percent, though few companies pay that top rate. But Obama and the Republicans who now control Congress disagree over how much to cut that rate and over which tax breaks would have to be eliminated or shrunk to offset the lost revenue, the Bloomberg report said. Obama wants to …

  • Fake charities prey on your goodwill to make bank

Taking advantage of your goodwill and pocketing your donations is Mission No. 1 for fake charities. The IRS on Friday warned taxpayers not to be suckered into giving money to any group until confirming it is legitimate. Fake charities often take a name that sounds very similar to well-known charities, and even make their websites look similar. The IRS recommends using its Select Check tool, though it is not the most user-friendly if you only have the name and location of the group. As a back-up, you can also look up the organization on Charity Navigator. Never give out your personal financial information, such as your Social Security number, to anyone asking for money, the IRS warned. And if you’re going to make a donation using your credit card, only do so with an organization you know and trust. Also, never give or send cash – which is catnip for scammers. If you want to …

Waco, TX (SportsNetwork.com) – Kenny Chery totaled 23 points thanks to a 5- of-7 performance from long range, and Royce O’Neale added 20 with eight rebounds as No. 20 Baylor topped 19th-ranked Texas, 83-60, at the Ferrell Center. Taurean Price and Johnathan Motley each contributed 13 points for the Bears (16-5, 4-4 Big 12), while Rico Gathers clocked in with eight points and 15 boards as the Bears won for the third time in their last four. “You can’t get much more unselfish play than 24 assists and only nine turnovers. It was excellent offensive execution with guys making the extra pass,” said Baylor head coach Scott Drew. “We knew we had to get a good shot on our first [attempt] because you’ve got two monster teams on the glass. If you were depending on a lot of second or third chance points, it was going to be tough.” Jonathan Holmes had 17 points for …

  • Hong Kong protesters set to return

1 February 2015 Last updated at 06:22 The umbrella became a symbol of the protests last year Pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong plan to take to the streets for their first big rally since mass protests last year. A large police presence is expected to deter protesters from reoccupying key areas of Hong Kong. But protesters are not reported to be planning a repeat of the occupations that shut down parts of the city. Last year’s Occupy demonstrations called for fully democratic elections for the territory’s chief executive. China has promised the semi-autonomous territory direct elections in 2017, but ruled candidates had to be vetted by Beijing. Organisers hope up to 50,000 people will attend Sunday’s pro-democracy rally Tens of thousands started taking to the streets in September 2014, demanding change. There were violent clashes with police, and the final protest camp was dismantled in December. An organiser, Daisy Chan, told the AFP news agency …

  • Surprise! Dish Network emerges as major wireless player after FCC auction

Dish, once again, demonstrated that it is serious about the wireless business. But just what that business is remains to be seen. Dish Network The nation’s second-largest satellite TV provider was a surprise winner of the Federal Communications Commission’s so-called AWS-3 wireless spectrum auction, which concluded Thursday and generated a record-breaking $45 billion. Dish, which bid with several partners including BlackRock, spent $13.3 billion, although it qualified for some FCC credits that lowered its actual payment to about $10 billion. That’s only behind ATT, which was the top bidder after spending $18.2 billion. Dish’s aggressive bid, which exceeded Wall Street expectations, raises the question of what it will do with all of that spectrum, which will join an already unused stockpile that the company is sitting on. For wireless carriers such as ATT and Verizon, which came in third in the auction with $10.4 billion in bids, the spectrum is a critical resource to be …

  • Ex-Super Bowl champ Leonard Marshall to teach about concussions

(Reuters) – Two-time Super Bowl champion Leonard Marshall is teaming up with the lawyer who first sued the NFL over concussions to form an educational road show on how to avoid and treat head injuries in sports. The target audience for the Brain Unity Trust is players, coaches and organizations, said Marshall, who suffers from CTE-related illnesses, perhaps from concussions during his 12 seasons as a defensive lineman in the National Football League in the 1980s and ’90s. Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a progressive degenerative disease of the brain often found in athletes who suffered repetitive brain trauma. “Leonard never had an opportunity to realize that he had an injury, that it was a problem,” said Pittsburgh lawyer Jason Luckasevic, who first sued the NFL in 2011 over concussions. “He was told that that was part of the process. You see stars, you take an Advil and that’s it. There’s nothing wrong with you.” …

  • Whitney Houston’s daughter Bobbi Kristina discovered unresponsive in tub

At 10:20 a.m. today, Brown’s husband, Nick Gordon, and a friend entered the home to find Brown facedown and unresponsive in the bathtub. More: Bobbi Kristina Brown is happily married to her ‘brother’ Nick Gordon According to Roswell police spokeswoman Officer Lisa Holland, Gordon’s friend called 911 while Gordon — unable to find a pulse — began administering CPR and continued to do so until police and paramedics arrived on the scene and took over life-saving measures. Although detectives do not at this time believe foul play was involved, officers remained on scene at Brown’s home late into the afternoon, trying to determine the cause of events leading up to the incident. • Obama, Netanyahu and Iran: Why Israel’s leader won’t back down on Congress speech

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been invited by House Speaker John Boehner to address a joint session of Congress. It will be an occasion for Netanyahu to deliver his views on the nuclear deal with Iran that the White House and its European partners are attempting to craft. It is a deal Netanyahu does not like or trust. President Obama wants the speech canceled. He has made it clear that he won’t meet with Netanyahu. His senior officials are telling journalists, off the record, that a speech by Bibi could wreck Israeli-American relations, leave the Jewish state friendless and veto-less at the U.N. and unprotected from the aggression of the ayatollahs in Tehran. ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT Unlike the American president, Bibi can’t afford to simply hope for the best. For almost two decades he has been obsessed with what could happen to his country if the ayatollahs get their hands on the strategic weapons to carry out their deranged …

  • Secretary of State Kerry fined for not shoveling by Boston home

BOSTON (Reuters) – U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry was slapped with a $50 fine for failing to have a side street adjoining his Boston home shoveled following the blizzard that dropped more than 2 feet (60 cm) of snow on Massachusetts this week, a spokesman said on Friday. The fine was issued on Thursday after a snow-removal company hired by Kerry and his neighbors in the city’s historic Beacon Hill neighborhood saw yellow tape blocking the sidewalk alongside the home and thought it was related to security for the top U.S. diplomat. The tape had been put up to warn pedestrians of falling ice and snow, said Kerry’s spokesman, Glen Johnson. “Once they understood that they were allowed to enter the area, the contractors finished the sidewalk late Thursday morning,” he said. Kerry was in Saudi Arabia with President Barack Obama to attend the funeral of King Abdullah and meet with his successor, King …
