KANSAS CITY, Mo. –  Relatives searching for a missing woman have found the decomposed body of man in a Kansas City creek bed. The Kansas City Star (http://bit.ly/2j9sS6w ) reports that 21-year-old Brandon Herring had been missing since November when relatives of Jessica Runions discovered his remains Saturday. The Raytown man’s death has been ruled a homicide. Runions’ father, John Michael Runions, says “somebody else’s family is going to get some answers.” His daughter was last seen leaving a party in September. Kylr Yust was arrested and charged with burning the 21-year-old Raymore woman’s SUV. A judge entered a not guilty plea on his behalf. • U.S. appeals court won’t reconsider Microsoft email seizure ruling

NEW YORK An equally divided federal appeals court on Tuesday refused to reconsider its landmark decision that the U.S. government cannot force Microsoft Corp and other companies to turn over customer emails stored on servers outside the United States. By a 4-4 vote, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan let stand a July 14 decision that was seen as a victory for privacy advocates and for technology companies offering cloud computing and other services worldwide. Microsoft and the U.S. Department of Justice did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The case concerned Microsoft’s objection to a warrant seeking emails from a Dublin, Ireland, server in a narcotics case. Microsoft was thought to be the first U.S. company to challenge a domestic search warrant seeking data held outside the country. In the July decision, Circuit Judge Susan Carney said communications held by U.S. service providers on servers outside the United States were …

  • Human cases of bird flu climb in China

Jan. 24 (UPI) — The World Health Organization’s director-general warned of escalating cases of bird flu around the world, as human cases of viral infections continue to climb in rural China. On Monday, Dr. Margaret Chan said the WHO is on high alert because of the rising number of outbreaks of human cases of the H5N6 and H7N9 in Asia and in China. “Since 2013, China has reported epidemics of H7N9 infections in humans, now amounting to more than 1,000 cases, of which 38.5 percent were fatal,” Chan said in her address to the WHO executive board. China has reported 16 human infections of the H7N9 avian flu virus, including five deaths, according to state-owned news agency Xinhua. The latest patient, a woman in her 30s, was diagnosed Monday by the Hunan provincial disease control and prevention center. Human H7N9 infections have been reported in other Chinese provinces, including Guangdong, Guizhou, Hubei, Henan, Jiangxi and …

  • Samsung Galaxy S8 to have infinity display and iris scanner, insiders say

Samsung’s Galaxy S8 will come in two sizes, have an almost bezel-less, edge-to-edge “infinity” display and an iris scanner, the Guardian has learned. The Galaxy S8 will be announced in late March and go on sale on or around 21 April, later than the originally planned launch at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February due to knock-on effects of the Note 7 fiasco. The two variants will have screens in the 5in to 6in region, with the devices having the same or smaller proportions of previous versions of Samsung’s flagship smartphone but with larger displays, according to several well placed sources talking to the Guardian. The S7 was available with either a 5.1in and 5.5in screen. The two smartphones are codenamed Dream and Dream 2, representing the smaller and larger Galaxy S8 respectively, according to two sources. Both versions will have screens that curve down at the left and right sides of the device …

  • Quasi-phase transition spotted in water-filled carbon nanotubes

Lining up: water molecules within a carbon nanotube The optical properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) change when the tiny structures are filled with water. That is the conclusion of scientists in Belgium and the US, who attribute the change to a “quasi-phase transition” that occurs in the water – although the exact nature of the transition is unknown. The research points to a new technique for studying confined water molecules – which is crucial to various branches of science, but it is surprisingly difficult to do. The study could lead to better ways of delivering drugs in the body and even boost our understanding of quantum mechanics. SWCNTs are hollow hair-like structures with walls that are one atom thick. Normally they are closed at both ends, but sometimes the ends can be open and Sofie Cambré of the University of Antwerp in Belgium and colleagues have previously shown that open SWCNTs rapidly fill with …

  • New bird flu virus type confirmed on German turkey farm

HAMBURG A bird flu outbreak in north Germany this week was of a new subtype called H5N5, the first time the strain has been confirmed on a German farm, the country’s national animal disease center said on Tuesday. The H5N5 strain was found on a turkey farm in Germany in Steinburg in the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein, the Friedrich Loeffler Institute said.. The H5N5 strain has been found previously in wild birds in the Netherlands, Italy, Montenegro and Italy and Croatia, the institute said. It has also been found in wild birds in Germany this week. The institute is not changing its bird flu risk assessment, it said. There have been no recorded cases of H5N5 spreading to humans, it added. The contagious H5N8 bird flu strain has been found in hundreds of wild birds in Germany in recent weeks and isolated outbreaks on farms have been occurring despite tougher hygiene rules and orders to …

  • Sean Hannity: Trump mounts shock and awe campaign on DC

It is only day five of the Trump administration, and the commander-in-chief is already launching a shock and awe campaign against the Washington establishment. President Trump is not wasting any time enacting his agenda. He is following through on the pledge he made on the campaign trail and in his inaugural address: The days of all talk and no action are over. In fact, just hours after his swearing-in on Friday as the 45th president of the United States, Trump immediately took action to undo the damage left behind by President Obama. Trump on Friday signed an executive order that could go a long way toward dismantling the disastrous health care law known as ObamaCare. On Day 2, President Trump took action to freeze all new and pending federal government regulations. On Monday, he pulled the U.S. out of the job-killing Trans Pacific Partnership trade deal. And he has already spoken with the leaders of …

  • Sea lion climbs atop car in Washington state, takes a nap

Jan. 24 (UPI) — A Washington state woman captured video of an unusual parking lot scene involving a sea lion that refused to budge from the top of a car. Melanie Sceva Hill said in a Facebook post she came across the strange sight Saturday on Whidbey Island. The post included photos of the sea lion as well as a video of the animal looking around at the spectators before spreading out on the roof for a rest. “Only on Whidbey Island!” Hill wrote. “A [sea lion] on the roof of someone’s car in the Nichols Brothers parking lot. This is happening right now and I guess he’s been there for a while!” Witnesses said two deputies with the Island County Sheriff’s Office eventually arrived and helped coax the sea lion, which had fallen asleep, down from atop the Honda Civic.
