  • House Democrats Pummel Republicans in August Fundraising

By Abby Livingston Posted at 5:15 p.m. today 0 Tweet Israel is the Chairman of the DCCC. (Douglas Graham/CQ Roll Call File Photo) The House Democratic political arm far outpaced Republicans in August, just as both parties prepared to unleash their war chests for the midterms. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee raised more money than its GOP counterpart every month this cycle — but August marked an especially brutal thrashing. Last month, the DCCC raised more cash than the National Republican Congressional Campaign Committee by more than two-to-one. The DCCC raised $10.2 million last month, compared to the NRCC’s $4.4 million haul, according to sources from both committees. Democrats headed into the fall campaign with a significant cash-on-hand advantage as well. The DCCC will report $54.5 million in cash on hand, while the NRCC had $45.7 million. Both committees had final fundraising pushes when Congress was in session. At a member dinner on Tuesday, DCCC …

  • Russian brewer buys Pabst Blue Ribbon

A Russian brewer is taking over American icon Pabst Blue Ribbon. Oasis Beverages, which is based in Russia, said on Friday it’s signed a deal to acquire Pabst Brewing Company, which is headquartered in Los Angeles. Pabst traces its roots to 1844 and owns a number of well-known American beer brands, including Pabst Blue Ribbon, Old Milwaukee, Schlitz and the malt liquor Colt 45. It recently resurrected one of the most popular beers of the mid twentieth century, Ballantine India Pale Ale. Oasis, which also has brewing operations in Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan, did not disclose the terms of the deal, except to say that the investment company TSG Consumer Partners has a minority stake. Oasis said it will not change any of the Pabst brands. “There are definitely NO plans to change any of the recipes of the brands,” said an Oasis staffer, in an email to CNNMoney. “The entire team at Pabst …

  • Afghanistan presidential candidates strike power-sharing deal

The rival candidates in Afghanistan‘s messy election for a new president finally struck a power-sharing deal on Saturday, aides said, after more than two months of tension over a vote in which each side accused the other of fraud. The crisis has further destabilised Afghanistan just as the US-led military coalition prepares to withdraw most foreign troops at the end in the year, leaving Afghan forces to fight the Taliban insurgency. Teams from both sides had met late into the night with United Nations representatives to try to finalise a power-sharing deal before Sunday’s scheduled announcement of the final election results after a UN-monitored audit and recount. The last sticking point was how to announce the results of the audit. Aides and officials have said candidate Abdullah Abdullah, a former foreign minister, had insisted that the official percentages either not be made public at all or be altered to give him more votes. Abdullah is …

  • Oculus closer to launch with new virtual reality headset

Oculus’ new “Crescent Bay” prototype includes headphones. Oculus HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Oculus VR took another step on the road to releasing virtual reality technology to the public, showing a new prototype with higher-quality imagery and the promise to more fully immerse users in digital worlds. The company said it’s developed a new prototype called Crescent Bay. The device, which Oculus said still isn’t ready to be released to the wider public, has new display technology and integrated headphones. The device can also track a player as they turn in a complete circle. The move marks a critical step for Oculus, which Facebook agreed to purchase for $2 billion in March. The company is preparing for the eventual release of its “Rift” headset to the general public, expected sometime next year. “We’re really sprinting toward the consumer version,” Brendan Iribe, CEO of Oculus, said during his keynote speech at the Oculus developers conference here. The stakes …

  • NASA Launches New Citizen Science Website; Opens Challenge to Participate in Future Mars Missions

[image-36] NASA announced Saturday the opening of registration for its Mars Balance Mass Challenge and the launch of its new website, NASA Solve, at the World Maker Faire in New York. “NASA is committed to engaging the public, and specifically the maker community through innovative activities like the Mars Balance Mass Challenge,” said NASA Chief Technologist David Miller. “And NASA Solve is a great way for members of the public, makers and other citizen scientists to see all NASA challenges and prizes in one location.” The Mars Balance Mass Challenge seeks design ideas for small science and technology payloads that could potentially provide dual purpose as ejectable balance masses on spacecraft entering the Martian atmosphere. The payloads will serve two roles: perform scientific or technology functions that help us learn more about the Red Planet, and provide the necessary weight to balance planetary landers. Submissions are due by Nov. 21. A winner will be announced …

  • Bill Clinton says must ‘do whatever it takes’ to fight Ebola

WASHINGTON/NEW YORK (Reuters) – New initiatives from the United States, Britain, France and other countries to help fight the Ebola epidemic that has been spreading exponentially in West Africa marked a “good beginning,” former President Bill Clinton said on Saturday, but said the world will need to do more. “We’re still a little behind the curve but we’re getting there,” Clinton told reporters in a conference call, a day before his charity, the Clinton Global Initiative, was set to begin its 10th annual meeting in New York. A chartered 747 jet, carrying the largest single shipment of aid to the Ebola zone to date and coordinated by CGI and other U.S. aid organizations, departed New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport on Saturday afternoon bound for West Africa. After refueling in Cape Verde, the Kalitta Air charter is scheduled to land in Freetown, Sierra Leone, on Sunday morning. The shipment of 170 pallets containing gloves, …

  • Ray Rice, Adrian Peterson cases: NFL abuse scandals are an opportunity

“I think everybody is learning. Everybody is more aware.” Facing reporters on September 12, San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh was struggling to put the myriad of physical abuse scandals in perspective. You could feel his reticence as he searched for the right words. Even for an coach regarded as one of best thinkers in the NFL, it was an uncomfortable news conference on a disquieting subject. But the more he talked, the more Harbaugh found his voice. And, in a way, the voice of America. He continued, “(Everybody) is taking the opportunity to be aware of domestic violence. Just how many people it affects. Just see what we can do to grow and learn.” He was right. We’ve got a lot to learn. And it is a painful process. ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT Consider the facts. • Armed with banana, man robs Philadelphia store, slips away on bike

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) – A man armed with a banana robbed a convenience store in Philadelphia and rode away on a bicycle with cash and cigarettes, a security surveillance tape showed. The suspect strolled into Tejada Grocery and got in line behind another customer at the counter, where individual bananas were available for sale, according to the tape of Tuesday’s robbery, which was released by police on Wednesday. As his turn at the cash register approached, the man stuffed a banana into the pocket of his hoodie and used it to simulate a gun. Police said the man demanded cash and cigarettes. The robber rode then away on a bicycle, surveillance video showed. Authorities, who did not say how much cash was taken, said the suspect was still being sought on Thursday.
