  • Apple to replace AT&T on Dow Jones

6 March 2015 Last updated at 15:16 Apple, the biggest US company by market value, will be included in the Dow Jones Industrial Average from 19 March. It replaces ATT, which first joined the US stock market barometer in 1916. Despite being one of the most successful US firms, Apple was excluded from the Dow because its high stock price would have distorted the price-weighted index. But a change in the structure of Visa shares, which is in the same sector as Apple, has made room for iPhone maker. Continue reading the main story Apple Inc. • House freshmen Republicans vow to press conservative demands

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Bruised but undeterred, some of the far-right Republicans who picked a fight in Congress and lost this week over funding the U.S. domestic security agency say they’re just getting started. The views of a handful of first-term conservatives who spoke with Reuters after the Department of Homeland Security battle suggest more conflict among Republicans lies ahead. At the core of these House of Representatives members’ defiance is a conviction that their duty as lawmakers lies first with constituents and the Constitution, while House Speaker John Boehner’s agenda comes further down the list. For Boehner, who was stunningly rebuked last week by these same conservatives in a pivotal vote, unifying his party for tough fiscal challenges ahead may be more difficult than ever. “My job’s not to demand where leadership should or shouldn’t be. That’s not even on my radar,” said Representative Jody Hice of Georgia. “My job is to represent the people …

  • Andrew Lack is back at NBC News

What started with a phone call last month about Brian Williams ended on Friday in Andy Lack’s appointment as chairman of NBC News and MSNBC. Lack will replace Pat Fili-Krushel. He will start work in April, NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke said. Lack, 67, who ran the news division during its glory years in the 1990s, is returning at a moment of tumult. “Andy’s experience and familiarity with our company and specifically the news division will be critical to our growth and future success,” Burke said in an internal memo. In the coming months, Lack and Burke have to decide whether Williams should return to the “NBC Nightly News.” Related: Earlier this week: NBC News to shake up top execs Williams’ embellishments about an Iraq War mission led to his suspension last month and exacerbated a sense of crisis within the news division. Lack similarly took over NBC News in 1993 after a crisis involving the …

  • EU chief seeks Ukraine truce push

6 March 2015 Last updated at 14:58 Please turn on JavaScript. Media requires JavaScript to play. Why are the Baltic states worried about the challenge from Russia? The EU’s foreign policy chief has called for international efforts to make a fragile ceasefire for eastern Ukraine stick. Speaking ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers, Federica Mogherini insisted implementation of the Mink peace deal was “the way forward”. This comes after senior figures in the US Congress called for Washington to send lethal defence weapons to Ukraine. The Ukraine crisis expected to dominate the agenda at the meeting in Riga. Ms Mogherini admitted the ceasefire agreed in Minsk last month was “not perfect”, but described the overall outlook as “positive”. “What Ukraine needs now is not only the full respect of its sovereignty, of its territorial integrity, but it is also peace,” she said. “And we have to work, all together on these two dimensions.” …

  • When One Spouse Exercises, the Other May Start, Too

FRIDAY, March 6, 2015 (HealthDay News) — If you start an exercise program, it might inspire your spouse to do the same, a new study says. “When it comes to physical fitness, the best peer pressure to get moving could be coming from the person who sits across from you at the breakfast table,” study co-author Laura Cobb, a doctoral student at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, said in a Hopkins news release. Researchers examined data from more than 3,200 married couples in Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi and North Carolina who provided information about their physical activity levels at an initial visit, and again six years later. At the first visit, 45 percent of husbands and 33 percent of wives met the American Heart Association’s recommendation that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise or at least 75 minutes of intense exercise a week. Husbands of wives who did the recommended amount …

  • Did Kanye West Mistake Jared Leto For His Wife?

Posted on Fri Mar 6th, 2015 7:15am PDT       By X17 Staff We kid, we kid. But we can totally understand if Kanye West saw Jared Leto’s shock of blonde hair and for a split second thought he was walking out of the building with Kim K! Last night Kimye and Jared Leto went to the Balmain and Lanvin shows for Paris Fashion Week, and they later dined at Laperouse in Paris. We caught the rapper hitting the town with the peroxided actor after the Lanvin event, and we know they’re both into music and fashion (well, Jared’s probably more into models than couture), but who ever would have guessed that they’d hang out?! We were questioning the bleach blonde trend when we first got a peek at Kim’s locks, but if Jared’s doing it, maybe they’re on to something:   SEE THE GALLERY Jared Leto Is A Blonde Babe At Balmain Stories from around the Web

  • Our President and the Constitution: Barack Obama has gone rogue

(AP) Can the president rewrite federal laws? Can he alter their meaning? Can he change their effect? These are legitimate questions in an era in which we have an unpopular progressive Democratic president who has boasted that he can govern without Congress by using his phone and his pen, and a mostly newly elected largely conservative Republican Congress with its own ideas about big government. These are not hypothetical questions. In 2012, President Obama signed executive orders that essentially said to about 1.7 million unlawfully present immigrants who arrived in the U.S. before their 16th birthdays and who are not yet 31 years of age that if they complied with certain conditions that he made up out of thin air they will not be deported. ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT When the president effectively writes the laws, Congress is effectively neutered. In 2014, the president signed additional executive orders that essentially made the same offer to about 4.7 …

  • Florida man drove dead body to attorney’s office: police

ORLANDO, Fla. (Reuters) – Florida detectives are investigating the case of a man who drove to his lawyer’s office with a dead body in the bed of his pickup truck, authorities said on Thursday. John Marshall, 52, said he shot his neighbor in self-defense during a scuffle involving a gun, his attorney, Robert Harris, told the Fort Myers News-Press and WINK-TV. The lawyer reported the death of 65-year-old Theodore Hubbell, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, which said it had not made any arrests. The men were neighbors in Bokeelia, a community of about 2,000 people on Pine Island in southwest Florida, according to sheriff’s spokesman Tony Schall. Marshall was taken to the hospital with facial wounds and possibly broken thumbs, according to the News-Press. Harris told the News-Press that Marshall had called him days earlier saying he feared for his safety. It was not clear why the men were fighting, but their dispute …
