  • Former New Hampshire prep school student found not guilty of rape

CONCORD, N.H. A former student of an elite New Hampshire prep school was found not guilty on Friday of raping a 15-year-old girl days before graduation last year in a case that has shone a harsh spotlight on the school’s culture. Owen Labrie, 19, was found not guilty of three felony counts of raping a fellow student at St. Paul’s School in Concord. The jury found him guilty of lesser misdemeanor counts of having sex with a person under the age of consent, as well as a felony count of using online communications to seduce a minor. Labrie closed his eyes and began to sob as the first verdict, finding him guilty of computer-related seduction, was read but regained his composure as the jury forewoman read out the three not guilty verdicts. His lawyer, J.W. Carney, patted his back to soothe him. Central to the trial was the “senior salute,” a longstanding tradition among St. …

  • Democratic Senator Carper pledges support for Iran nuclear deal

WASHINGTON U.S. Senator Tom Carper, a Democrat from Delaware, said on Friday that he will support the nuclear deal with Iran. “This is a good deal for America and our allies, including Israel, one of our closest allies. And, oh yes. It beats the likely alternative – war with Iran – hands down,” Carper wrote in an opinion piece published in The News Journal of Delaware on Friday. • Amazon’s impressive cash flow: Don’t be fooled by it

Amazon.com founder and CEO Jeff Bezos. Retail giant Amazon seems to be on a roll. The company’s cash flow figures are exploding. Over the past 12 months, Amazon (AMZN, Tech30) has produced a staggering $8.98 billion of operating cash flow and $4.37 billion of free cash flow. Both dwarf the $188 million net loss the company posted over the same period. Earlier this year, I argued that Amazon’s free cash flow figures are deceptive. The company finances billions of dollars of additional capital spending using capital leases, and this greatly inflates Amazon’s free cash flow. Including the $4.7 billion of assets Amazon acquired under capital leases over the past year, its adjusted free cash flow is actually negative. Related: Jeff Bezos isn’t boss of the year – but Amazon is booming I also argued separately that the nature of Amazon Web Services, where servers and computing equipment get depreciated over just a few years, is …

  • Indians’ Danny Salazar scratched from start

CLEVELAND (AP) The Indians have scratched Danny Salazar from his start against the Los Angeles Angels because of an unspecified illness. Salazar was scheduled to start the series opener Friday night for the Indians, who despite inconsistency all season are just five games out of an AL wild-card spot. Trevor Bauer will move up one day and replace Salazar. In his first full season in Cleveland’s rotation, Salazar is 11-7 with a 3.30 ERA in 23 starts. Salazar allowed four runs in 4 2/3 innings in a loss to the New York Yankees last week. Manager Terry Francona is expected to provide an update on Salazar during his pre-game availability later Friday. Cleveland has won seven of its last nine home games, outscoring opponents 76-37. The Indians have at least 10 hits in nine straight home games, the first time they’ve done that since 1992.

  • Dominica hit by Tropical Storm Erika

Helicopter rescue teams in Dominica are flying to the aid of hillside villagers still trapped in their homes after the Caribbean island was hit by Tropical Storm Erika. Flash floods and landslides have killed at least four people. Another 20 are missing. Road bridges were swept out to sea, and flood debris, including a wrecked aircraft, blocked the main airport. Other Caribbean nations have issued tropical storm warnings. The storm hit Dominica on Thursday, dumping a huge amount of rain on the small, mountainous island in just a few hours. “Erika has really, really visited us with a vengeance,” Assistant Police Superintendent Claude Weekes told the AP news agency. “There are many fallen rocks and trees, and water. It’s really chaotic.” There are people missing in different parts of the island, added Mr Weekes. Dominica has a population of 72,000 people. • The Looming Problem That Could Kill Bitcoin

The way things are going, the digital currency Bitcoin will start to malfunction early next year. Transactions will become increasingly delayed, and the system of money now worth $3.3 billion will begin to die as its flakiness drives people away. So says Gavin Andresen, who in 2010 was designated chief caretaker of the code that powers Bitcoin by its shadowy creator. Andresen held the role of “core maintainer” during most of Bitcoin’s improbable rise; he stepped down last year but still remains heavily involved with the currency (see “The Man Who Really Built Bitcoin”). Andresen’s gloomy prediction stems from the fact that Bitcoin can’t process more than seven transactions a second. That’s a tiny volume compared to the tens of thousands per second that payment systems like Visa can handle—and a limit he expects to start crippling Bitcoin early in 2016. It stems from the maximum size of the “blocks” that are added to the …

  • Sir Elton John is the inspiration behind the name of a new coral reef crustacean species

Related images(click to enlarge) While exploring the remote coral reefs of Raja Ampat in Indonesia, Dr. James Thomas from the Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography, Florida, and his colleagues from Naturalis Natural History museum in the Netherlands, stumbled across a small but extraordinary crustacean living inside another reef invertebrate in a commensal association (without causing any harm, nor benefit to its host). In his amazement to the amphipod’s unusual form, Dr. Thomas called it L. eltoni after musician and actor Sir Elton John. The research is available in the open access journal ZooKeys. “I named the species in honour of Sir Elton John because I have listened to his music in my lab during my entire scientific career,” the lead author explains. “So, when this unusual crustacean with a greatly enlarged appendage appeared under my microscope after a day of collecting, an image of the shoes Elton John wore as the Pinball Wizard …

  • Sleep-deprived kids are more tempted by food

(Reuters Health) – Children who don’t get enough sleep might be more tempted by food, a new study suggests. Five-year-olds who slept less than 11 hours a night were more eager to eat at the sight or reminder of a favorite snack, compared to those who slept longer, researchers reported in the International Journal of Obesity. The children who slept less than 11 hours at night also had a higher body mass index – a measure of weight in relation to height – than those who slept 11 hours or more. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends 11 to 12 hours of sleep for pre-school children. “There is now accumulating evidence in both children and adults to suggest that short or insufficient sleep increases reward-driven (‘hedonic’) eating,” said Laura McDonald, the study’s lead author and a researcher at University College London, in email to Reuters Health. “This is, of course, a concern,” she …

  • Stocks wild week: Five key takeaways for rocky markets

“Panic” is a five-letter word, but Monday morning many investors were looking for profane four-letter variants. Worse, they’d hit the sell button and run for the hills. I can’t think of a bigger mistake. Market volatility comes and goes. Over time, it rarely amounts to anything more than a speed bump in history’s rearview mirror. The Dow rose 22,935% over the last century through war, boom, bust, political mayhem, depression, recession and more. It will again. That’s why the best course of action is to sit tight if possible, concentrate on what you know to be the bigger picture, and invest accordingly. The best course of action is to sit tight if possible, concentrate on what you know to be the bigger picture, and invest accordingly. I know that’s hard to do. Big down days are never fun. But then, neither is getting left on the platform after the train leaves. That’s, unfortunately, where too …

  • Devil to pay: Taiwan to launch softer than soft porn-star metro cards

TAIPEI Taiwan will roll out “angel” and “devil” metro cards featuring a Japanese porn star next week, despite a public outcry and a previous decision to scrap the project. Japanese adult film actress Yui Hatano will appear on a limited-edition charity series of Taiwan EasyCards, which users swipe to enter metro stations and buy goods at convenience stores. “We will issue the ‘devil’ edition Yui Hatano cards beginning September 1 as originally planned,” EasyCard Corp said in a statement, referring to the sexier of the two cards. The softer “angel” cards will be released after a change in theme after hearing “input from various parties”, it said. “We expect to launch the ‘angel’ edition cards in mid-September, following a redesign.” EasyCard had previously announced it would halt the roll-out following an angry public reaction. Taipei mayor Ko Wen-je said in a statement he didn’t know what motivated recently appointed EasyCard chairman Tai Chi-chuan to “make …
