Family of California woman killed by U.S. Border Patrol files suit

SAN DIEGO (Reuters) – The family of a San Diego woman killed in an encounter with the U.S. Border Patrol filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit on Tuesday alleging a plainclothes agent used excessive force when he opened fire on the woman as she tried to flee in a car.

Immigration activists gathered in prayer before the committee began its final work on the bill
A sweeping immigration bill that would offer a chance of citizenship to millions living in the US illegally has taken a stride forward in Congress.
A Senate panel voted 13-5 to back the measure, after a plan to allow people to sponsor same-sex partners for permanent legal status was withdrawn.

Miami-Dade lawmakers approve $1.6 billion sewer-lawsuit deal

(Reuters) – Florida’s Miami-Dade County on Tuesday promised to spend $1.6 billion on fixes for its dilapidated, accident-prone sewer system in a deal meant to settle a lawsuit with federal and state environmental officials.
County commissioners, many of whom complained about proposed user fee hikes of 33 percent over five years, approved a consent agreement detailing repairs in the county’s 7,500 miles of sewer lines with a vote of 12 to 1.

(Reuters) – Amag Pharmaceuticals Inc said its marketing partner in Switzerland, Takeda Pharmaceutical Co Ltd, is recalling a batch of Amag’s anemia drug, Rienso, because of a death and several cases of hypersensitivity.
Amag shares were down about 5 percent at $23.75 in after-market trading on Tuesday.

The Swiss condensed-matter physicist Heinrich Rohrer who shared the 1986 Nobel Prize for Physics died last week at the age of 79.
Rohrer won the Nobel prize for inventing the scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) at IBM’s Zürich Research Laboratory. Rohrer shared one half of the prize with his IBM colleague Gerd Binnig, while the other half went to Ernst Ruska for his invention of the electron microscope.
