  • California man arrested after firing on ice cream truck, police

(Reuters) – A southern California man was arrested following a nine-hour standoff with police after he opened fire on an ice cream truck and later shot at officers, police said on Monday. Terry McKinney, 59, was arrested late on Sunday following the hours-long standoff, said San Bernardino Police Lieutenant Rich Lawhead. No one was injured, he said. Around 3 p.m. local time (2200 GMT) on Sunday, police responded to reports that a man had shot an ice cream truck and another car. When officers arrived, McKinney retreated into his home and refused to comply with police instructions, Lawhead said. During the tense situation, police used an armored vehicle to deliver a phone to McKinney to open a dialogue and McKinney fired multiple shots at the vehicle, Lawhead said. Police responded by shooting roughly two dozen canisters of tear gas and other chemicals into the home, one of which caused a fire to break out inside …

  • Say what? A minimum-wage hike finds hope in U.S. heartland

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama’s push to raise the minimum wage, which has largely found success in liberal-leaning coastal states to date, could make headway in the conservative heartland in the November elections. Voters in the Republican-controlled states of Alaska, Arkansas, Nebraska and South Dakota will consider ballot initiatives in November that would raise the minimum wage above the national rate of $7.25 per hour. Activists on both sides of the issue say the proposals stand a good chance of passing. If successful, the ballot measures would provide further evidence that the idea of raising minimum pay has support across party lines. A favorable outcome could also turn up the heat on Congress to raise the national rate. Obama proposed raising the national minimum to $9 per hour in his 2013 State of the Union address and now advocates for a national minimum of $10.10. But the idea has gained little traction among Republicans …

  • Heineken rejects takeover in bid to stay independent

Heineken has rejected a takeover bid from beer giant SABMiller, saying it hopes to remain independent despite widespread consolidation in the beer industry. Heineken (HEINY), which also produces Amstel, Tecate and Dos Equis, has been controlled by its founding family since 1864, and is Europe’s largest brewer by volume. The Dutch brewer said in a statement that it hopes to preserve the company’s “heritage and identity” by remaining independent. Heineken is an attractive takeover target in an industry that has seen major consolidation in recent years as Anheuser-Busch InBev (AHBIF) and SABMiller have used mergers and acquisitions to build beverage empires. Related: The world’s most popular beer is … AB InBev is currently the world’s largest brewer, a status reinforced by its 2008 purchase of Anheuser-Busch. The producer of Stella Artois, Corona and Budweiser owns or has a major stake in six of the world’s top 10 beers by volume, and has continued to …

  • China table tennis coach puts heat on Olympic champ Zhang

BEIJING (Reuters) – The head coach of China’s all-conquering men’s table tennis team has warned Olympic and world singles champion Zhang Jike to knuckle down at the Asian Games or risk throwing away his chance to defend his gold medal at the Rio Games. Though the 26-year-old has been virtually untouchable in singles since his 2011 world title in Rotterdam, his lackluster performances in team events have been a source of frustration for long-serving coach Liu Guoliang. China won the world championships team event in Japan in May but Zhang was swept 3-0 by Germany’s Dimitrij Ovtcharov in his rubber of the final, and also had a surprise loss to Taiwan’s Chen Chien-an at last year’s World Team Classic in Guangzhou. Liu cautioned the Qingdao-born paddler, the fastest winner of the ‘grand slam’ of Olympic, world championship and world cup table tennis’ titles, against complacency and said his team mates were eyeing his place for …

  • Phones 4U poised for administration

15 September 2014 Last updated at 08:06 Please turn on JavaScript. Media requires JavaScript to play. Joe Lynam reports: ”A sad and sudden end to a hug and profitable company” Retailer Phones 4U is poised to fall into administration putting 5,596 jobs at risk. The chain, which is owned by private equity firm BC Partners, said its 550 stores would all be closed on Monday. Phones 4U blamed the move on mobile network EE’s decision not to renew its contract, which followed a similar move from Vodafone earlier in September. “If mobile network operators decline to supply us, we do not have a business,” said Phones 4U boss David Kassler. The company said established mobile contracts taken out through it would not be affected, although phones ordered and not despatched – for example anyone ordering the new iPhone 6 over the weekend – would be. A customer service line will be open from Monday at …

  • NJIT researchers working to safeguard the shoreline

An NJIT research team has estimated the total mass of oil that reached the Gulf of Mexico shore in the wake of the BP Deepwater Horizon blowout. It’s the first time such an estimate was reported, and the study is published in the August issue of Environmental Science and Technology. The researchers found that 22,000 tons of oil reached the Gulf shoreline in 2010. This finding will help officials determine the persistence of oil on the shore and identify potential harm to the ecosystem. The study was conducted by the Center for Natural Resources Development and Protection (NRDP) at NJIT, whose director, Michel Boufadel, is known internationally for oil-spill research. Three researchers from the center — Xiaolong Geng, Ali Abdollahi Nasab, and Jagadish Torlapati — assisted Boufadel in the study. The researchers found that the mass of oil reaching the shoreline was between 10,000 and 30,000 tons, with an average value of 22,000 tons. That …

  • Sierra Rutile sees limited operations during Ebola lockdown

(Reuters) – Minerals group Sierra Rutile Ltd said its operations would be restricted during the three-day countrywide lockdown to halt the spread of Ebola across Sierra Leone and that it would optimize operations in the lead-up to mitigate overall impact of the disruption. The company, which mines rutile in the south west of Sierra Leone, said export of products to customers would not be affected and that essential services such as the power plant and a health clinic would continue to operate as normal. The West African country will restrict residents to the areas around their homes for three days from September 19 in a bid to halt new infections and help health workers track down people suffering from the disease. Ebola, a contagious, haemorrhagic fever was first discovered in eastern Guinea in March and has since killed more than 2,400 people, mostly in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, making it the worst Ebola outbreak …

  • The way of serenity: Saying yes to sacred encounters

Columbia University (Reuters) He was so right, and I wish I could go back in time to tell him how wrong I was. It was a bitter cold night in Harlem when I met this gentleman, a man whose name I am embarrassed to say I don’t remember.  ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT Coming up from the subway that evening, I was in no mood for conversation. It couldn’t have been past 5pm but already it was mostly dark, one of those short days of the year that feel so very long. The world is a very messy place right now. But the great news is that amidst this chaos, no matter who we are or what people are doing around us, sacred moments still happen. The day at the office had been mostly disappointing. I wanted to get home, slump into the armchair, and zone out on ESPN.  But I couldn’t avoid him. “Father, I need to talk …
