  • Process of carving up $60M Sandusky fine from Penn State for anti-child abuse efforts underway

June 20: Former Penn State University assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky arrives at the Centre County Courthouse in Bellefonte, Pa. (AP) HARRISBURG, Pa. –  Now that a settlement has cleared the way for $60 million from Penn State to be spent in Pennsylvania to address child sexual abuse, potential recipients are starting to think about how that money might be put to use. “There’s certainly a tremendous need,” said Linda Rosenberg, executive director of the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency. “In the area of child sexual abuse, I don’t know if there’s ever enough money to help support the need.” ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT The Jan. 16 deal that ended litigation by two state officials against Penn State and the NCAA split up the money, with $12 million being retained by the university and $48 million going to Rosenberg’s agency. Penn State agreed to the $60 million fine in 2012, as part of a consent decree with …

  • Dems say Homeland Security mess will hurt GOP

By CHARLES BABINGTON March 1, 2015 House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of Calif.(AP Photo/Manuel Balce Ceneta) Democrats are losing some skirmishes over the Department of Homeland Security, but many feel they are winning a political war that will haunt Republicans in 2016 and beyond. Democrats lacked the votes Friday to force Republicans to fund the department for a year with no strings. Still, even some Republicans say party leaders are on a perilous path with a very public ideological struggle only highlighting the GOP’s inability to pass contested legislation and possibly worsening its weak relationship with Hispanic voters. Worst of all, numerous lawmakers said, Republican leaders have offered no plausible scenario for a successful ending, so they simply are delaying an almost certain and embarrassing defeat. Conservatives defend their doggedness. They say they courageously are keeping promises to oppose President Barack Obama’s liberalization of deportation policies, which they consider unconstitutional. Several said their constituents support …

  • Samsung unveils beautiful new Galaxy S6

The front and back body of Samsung Galaxy S6 phones are molded from Gorilla Glass. Samsung set out to build a better looking line of Galaxy phones this year, and it definitely achieved its goal. The South Korean electronics company unveiled the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge on Sunday afternoon at Mobile World Conference in Barcelona. I got a chance to preview both new models at a media event in New York earlier the week. First things first. I’m an iPhone user. I’ve been an iPhone user since Apple (AAPL, Tech30) first introduced it in 2007. Thus, my knowledge of Samsung (SSNLF) phones and the Android platform is slim. I’ve only ever interacted with them when strangers stop me on the street and ask for a picture because they don’t have a selfie stick. In addition, during the preview event, I only played with these phones for a few minutes. That said, the new …

Calgary, AB (SportsNetwork.com) – The Calgary Flames have placed defenseman Mark Giordano on injured reserve because of undisclosed upper body injury. Giordano was hurt during the third period of Wednesday’s game against New Jersey after taking a hit from Devils forward Steve Bernier. He took part in the pregame skate prior to Friday’s contest against the New York Islanders, but did not play. The Flames’ captain has 11 goals and 37 assists for a career-high 48 points in 61 games this season. He is tied with Montreal’s P.K. Subban for the scoring lead among defensemen in the league this season. Calgary added depth to its blue line Sunday by claiming defenseman David Schlemko off waivers from Dallas. Schlemko appeared in 20 games with Arizona this season, then joined Dallas and played five games for the Stars before being waived on Saturday. He has one goal and three assists this season. 1 March 2015 Last updated at 16:23 Mr Netanyahu said he would do everything to secure Israel’s future Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu is on his way to the US to argue his case against a possible nuclear deal with Iran. Mr Netanyahu says the deal would be inadequate to prevent Tehran from acquiring a nuclear bomb. He is due to give a speech in Congress on Tuesday which was not agreed in advance with the Obama administration, angering the White House. The speech comes two weeks before Israeli elections, with his Likud party under pressure in domestic polls. The US and other powers – the so-called P5+1 – are negotiating with Iran on its nuclear programme. They want a framework agreement by the end of the month which addresses concerns that Iran is seeking nuclear weapons technology, something Tehran denies. ‘Political football’ Before getting on the plane for Washington, Mr Netanyahu described his trip as …

  • MediaTek seeds new investment arm with $300M war chest

The entrance to MediaTek’s booth for this year’s CES at The Venetian. Ben Fox Rubin/CNET Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek unveiled a new investment arm and funded it with $300 million, hoping to use the group to raise its influence and lesser-known profile in the tech world. MediaTek Ventures, based in the company’s hometown of Hsinchu, Taiwan, will start investing in startups in Greater China, Europe, Japan and North America that are working on chips, Internet infrastructure and connected devices. The company, which announced the investment arm Sunday ahead of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, said it hopes to use the new group to create an ecosystem of startups around MediaTek’s products and services and help build up the next generation of entrepreneurs. The venture arm is part of MediaTek’s strategy to become a bigger player in tech, after it’s dominated the Chinese smartphone market for low- and mid-tier devices. In the 10 years since it entered …

  • The sun has more impact on the climate in cool periods

The activity of the Sun is an important factor in the complex interaction that controls our climate. New research now shows that the impact of the Sun is not constant over time, but has greater significance when the Earth is cooler. There has been much discussion as to whether variations in the strength of the Sun have played a role in triggering climate change in the past, but more and more research results clearly indicate that solar activity — i.e. the amount of radiation coming from the Sun — has an impact on how the climate varies over time. In a new study published in the scientific journal Geology, researchers from institutions including Aarhus University in Denmark show that, during the last 4,000 years, there appears to have been a close correlation between solar activity and the sea surface temperature in summer in the North Atlantic. This correlation is not seen in the preceding period. …

  • Ultrasound Treatment May Be Option for Plantar Fasciitis

SUNDAY, March 1, 2015 (HealthDay News) — An ultrasound technique is showing early promise as a quick and minimally invasive treatment for the common and painful foot condition known as plantar fasciitis. The finding is based on a short-term study involving just 65 patients, the researchers noted. “While the long-term outcome studies are in progress, the results we have seen to date are very promising,” said study lead author Dr. Rahul Razdan, an interventional radiologist with Advanced Medical Imaging in Lincoln, Neb. The American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society describes plantar fasciitis as essentially an “overuse injury” resulting from inflammation of a band of tissue in the sole of the foot that links the heel bone to the base of the toes. According to Razdan, standard treatment includes painkillers, cortisone shots, icing, heating, massage, silicone arch supports, and physical therapy centered on the benefits of controlled stretching. For some patients, invasive surgery is another option. …

  • 17 Celebs freaking out about the black and blue #whatcoloristhisdress war

It’s the question of the ages — the question that took the Internet by storm Thursday afternoon: What color is this f***ing dress? White and gold? Blue and black? People are debating the color of this dress: http://t.co/q4ehsvw8IR pic.twitter.com/Rh3PgspIU0 — CNN (@CNN) February 27, 2015 It turns out there are a lot of sciencey reasons for why some people see blue and black and others see white and gold, but that hasn’t stopped the question from being deeply divisive, because if there’s anything the Internet rocks at, it’s viciously defending its own position in an ultimately pointless debate. More: Why no one can agree on the Color Changing Dress Even celebrities aren’t safe from the insanity of it all. They’re on Twitter with the rest of us, tearing out their hair over defending the colors they see. I see white and gold and I cannot fathom how anybody could look at that picture and see black …

  • The Internet Gone Mad: Stop talking about white and gold dress. Now.

I’m color blind. There’s not much good that comes from being color blind. Traffic lights are a challenge. I can never be a pilot. My wife frequently sends me back into the closet to change the frightful mélange of colors in which I’ve adorned myself, and I’m useless as a sounding board for her when she’s shopping (there’s also the fact that she looks stunningly beautiful in any color). But finally I’ve found the silver (or is it blue?) lining to being color blind. The gold/white, black/blue dress debate doesn’t matter to me. To me it’s green, blue, yellow, white, red, turquoise, magenta, grey, green and every other color on this great earth. And I don’t care.  ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT I love Facebook, I tweet a lot, I’ve been known to Instagram on occasion. But this? This national debate over what color a dress may or may not be? What has happened to us? If you …
