  • Cooler weather help firefighters make progress on huge Northern California wildfire

SAN FRANCISCO –  Cooler, wet weather helped firefighters make progress on a huge Northern California wildfire that destroyed nearly three-dozen structures, forced the evacuation of more than 2,000 people and forced the cancellation of a sporting event because of the smoke. More than 5,000 firefighters — from as far as Florida and Alaska — managed to increase containment of the fire from 10 to 17 percent on Sunday, said Capt. Tom Piranio, a state fire spokesman. The number of acres burned held steady at 128 square miles. ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT “The heavy drizzle helped the firefighters immensely. We got what we were looking for to gain containment of the fire,” he said. But earlier in the day, poor air quality forced a last-minute cancellation of two popular Ironman events in nearby Lake Tahoe, disappointing about 3,000 athletes who had signed up for the competition, Ironman operations manager Keats McGonigal said. “County air quality officials have recommended …

  • Expanding wildfire threatens more of California

A burned out bus is shown near one of several homes that burned in the recent King fire near Icehouse in El Dorado County(AP Photo/The Sacramento Bee, Randall Benton) As an expanding wildfire in Northern California kept nearly 3,000 people from their homes, teams sought to find out how many structured had already been lost to the huge blaze, authorities said. While officials confirmed that several structures have been damaged or destroyed in the King Fire, dangerous conditions have so far prevented them from determining an exact number or how many of them were homes, fire spokesman Mike McMillian said. The fire some 60 miles east of Sacramento grew to more than 128 square miles Saturday, and gathering thunderstorms could either help or harm the firefight with moisture or wind, authorities said. The blaze began one week ago, and a man accused of starting the blaze is being held on $10 million bail. It is …

  • Climate protesters to ‘flood’ Wall Street on Monday

Activists say Wall Street Capitalism is fueling the climate crisis. Hundreds of environmental activists plan to “flood” Wall Street on Monday to protest the role Big Business plays in climate change. The #FloodWallStreet campaign is part of a series of demonstrations taking place this week as world leaders gather in New York for a climate change summit on Tuesday at the United Nations. The goal is to highlight “a financial system that’s perpetuating the climate crisis,” said Bessie Schwarz, a spokeswoman for the group behind the #FloodWallStreet campaign. Thousands of protesters took to the streets Sunday in New York as part of the People’s Climate March, which organizers said was the largest climate change demonstration ever. “One day after the biggest climate march ever, we plan to take this energy down to Wall Street,” said Schwarz, who was reached while taking part in Sunday’s protest. On Monday protesters will decry the “financial profiteering” they say …

  • Yanks hit milestone homer in Tanaka’s return

Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) – Brett Gardner hit the 15,000th home run in Yankees franchise history to snap a fifth-inning tie and Brian McCann homered twice, helping New York to a 5-2 victory over Toronto in the return of Masahiro Tanaka on Sunday. Tanaka had been sidelined since early July with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. Doctors recommended rehab rather than Tommy John surgery and the rookie began a throwing program before pitching an instructional league game on Monday in Tampa. In his first start since July 8, Tanaka (13-4) allowed hits to the first two batters, leading to a run. He then surrendered just three more hits with no walks and four strikeouts the rest of the way before being lifted with one out in the sixth. The right-hander was on a strict pitch count and reached 70 at the time of his exit. If there are no complications, Yankees …

  • John Howard: there was no genocide against Indigenous Australians

The former prime minister John Howard has stood by his statements the he believes the Bringing Them Home report was wrong in its conclusions that genocide had been practised against Indigenous Australians. In a wide-ranging interview aired on Channel Seven’s Sunday Night program, Howard was asked about several controversial aspects of his leadership, including his refusal to offer a formal apology to the stolen generations. “I did apologise in a sense; I delivered a statement of regret to the parliament,” Howard said. “But it’s very easy to apologise for other people’s mistakes. The Australian public would have a lot more confidence in politicians who apologised for their own mistakes rather than the mistakes of others. “On top of that I didn’t accept the conclusion of the Bringing Them Home report that genocide had been practised against the Indigenous people. “I didn’t believe genocide had taken place, and I still don’t.” The 1997 report was based …

  • Apple voted United Kingdom’s coolest brand as Twitter slumps

Apple has retained its title as the coolest brand in Britain for the third year running but Twitter has fallen out of favour to make way for rival Instagram, according to an annual survey. The CoolBrands list saw Twitter drop out of the top 20 after three years, while Instagram made its debut at number 14. The streaming service Netflix, home of award-winning drama Breaking Bad, broke into the top 20 for the first time. Retailers Liberty and Selfridges returned after a one-year absence, as did technology brand Bose. The luxury fashion brand Stella McCartney also re-entered the top 20 alongside champagne label Dom Pérignon, which regained a place after a three-year absence. A total of 13 brands retained top 20 status from last year, including Chanel, Aston Martin and Nike, but those falling out of favour included Italian fashion giant Prada, Adidas and BBC iPlayer. The list is voted for by 2,000 consumers and …

  • NASA’s Newest Mars Mission Spacecraft Enters Orbit around Red Planet

[image-36] NASA’s Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) spacecraft successfully entered Mars’ orbit at 10:24 p.m. EDT Sunday, Sept. 21, where it now will prepare to study the Red Planet’s upper atmosphere as never done before. MAVEN is the first spacecraft dedicated to exploring the tenuous upper atmosphere of Mars. “As the first orbiter dedicated to studying Mars’ upper atmosphere, MAVEN will greatly improve our understanding of the history of the Martian atmosphere, how the climate has changed over time, and how that has influenced the evolution of the surface and the potential habitability of the planet,” said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden. “It also will better inform a future mission to send humans to the Red Planet in the 2030s.” After a 10-month journey, confirmation of successful orbit insertion was received from MAVEN data observed at the Lockheed Martin operations center in Littleton, Colorado, as well as from tracking data monitored at NASA’s Jet Propulsion …

  • Study of smoking cancer patients fuels e-cigarette debate

LONDON (Reuters) – The fierce debate over whether e-cigarettes can help people quit smoking took another twist on Monday as a research paper on their use by cancer patients was criticized as flawed. The study of cancer patients who smoke found that those using e-cigarettes as well as tobacco cigarettes were more nicotine dependent and equally or less likely to have quit than those who didn’t use e-cigarettes. The scientists behind the research, which was published online in Cancer, the journal of the American Cancer Society, said their results raised doubts about whether e-cigarettes had any benefit in helping cancer patients to give up smoking. But that conclusion was questioned by other tobacco and addiction researchers, who said the selection of patients for the study had given it an inherent bias. The uptake of e-cigarettes, which use battery-powered cartridges to produce a nicotine-laced vapor for the “smoker” to inhale, has rocketed in the past two …

  • Armed with banana, man robs Philadelphia store, slips away on bike

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) – A man armed with a banana robbed a convenience store in Philadelphia and rode away on a bicycle with cash and cigarettes, a security surveillance tape showed. The suspect strolled into Tejada Grocery and got in line behind another customer at the counter, where individual bananas were available for sale, according to the tape of Tuesday’s robbery, which was released by police on Wednesday. As his turn at the cash register approached, the man stuffed a banana into the pocket of his hoodie and used it to simulate a gun. Police said the man demanded cash and cigarettes. The robber rode then away on a bicycle, surveillance video showed. Authorities, who did not say how much cash was taken, said the suspect was still being sought on Thursday.
