(Chris Maddaloni/CQ Roll Call File Photo) Early voting is playing a crucial role in several of the cycle’s most contested races for the Senate, where control hangs in the balance ahead of Tuesday’s midterm elections. Senate Republicans must gain six seats to win the majority — and increasingly likely scenario. Here’s a look at how both sides are faring in early voting in four of the most competitive Senate races: Colorado Sen. Mark Udall, Democrat, vs. Rep. Cory Gardner, Republican. Rothenberg Political Report/Roll Call Race Rating: Tilts Republican  For the first time, all state voters will cast their ballot by mail. That makes early voting in the Centennial State just, well, voting. As of Friday, Republicans undeniably have the advantage: 41 percent of early voters were registered Republicans, while 32 percent were registered Democrats, according to data from Colorado’s Secretary …

  • Top overall pick Clowney has illness; questionable for Texans against Eagles

HOUSTON –  Top overall pick Jadeveon Clowney is unlikely to play for the Houston Texans when they host the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday because of an unspecified illness. Clowney missed practice Friday and when asked afterward about his status for Sunday, coach Bill O’Brien said: “I don’t know. I wouldn’t say it looks very good for him playing Sunday.” ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT The outside linebacker was listed as questionable on the injury report and it said he was out because of his knee and an illness. Clowney returned last week after missing six games following arthroscopic knee surgery and made one tackle in limited action. O’Brien said they’ll make a final decision on if Clowney will play on Sunday. ___ AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and http://twitter.com/AP_NFL

  • Brighton jihadi vows to fight to the death in Syria despite family pleas

A British jihadi whose two brothers have been killed fighting in Syria has said he is ignoring pleas from his father return home and will continue to battle pro-Bashar al-Assad forces “till death”. Amer Deghayes, the last surviving member of a group of four Brighton jihadis who secretly travelled to Syria earlier this year to fight for al-Qaida-affiliate Jabhat al-Nusra told the Guardian, “I didn’t come here … [for the] experience,” adding that he was praying for his “ending to be the best martyrdom in the front lines.” Speaking a week after his youngest brother, Jaffar, 17, was killed storming a Syrian government checkpoint, Deghayes, 20, said, “I cant afford to leave jihad and the journey to jannah [paradise].” Jaffar is the the youngest known Briton to have died during the gruesome three-year conflict. He is also the third of the ‘Brighton boys’ to have died this year. In April, Abdullah Deghayes 18, was killed …

  • Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo crashes during test flight

Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo, pictured here, crashed in Mojave, Calif. Virgin Galactic SpaceShipTwo, a suborbital space plane designed for space tourism and operated by Virgin Galactic, crashed Friday during a test flight in California’s Mojave Desert. The company said on Twitter that it doesn’t yet know the status of the aircraft’s pilots. However, the California Highway Patrol has confirmed one fatality, according to local NBC TV affiliate KGET, which also reported that one person with major injuries has been transported by emergency helicopter to a nearby hospital. According to a tweet from the Associated Press, a witness said the plane exploded in midair after its rockets ignited. That ignition is a key stage of SpaceShipTwo’s self-flight process, where it detaches from the larger WhiteKnightTwo aircraft that ferries it to cruise altitude. It’s unknown what caused the accident. Virgin Galactic is the space tourism company owned by billionaire Richard Branson’s Virgin Group. Its goal is to operate …

  • Hints of Progress in the Ebola Fight

At the epicenter of the Ebola outbreak there are finally flickers of hope. Wednesday the World Health Organization reported that even in the absence of new vaccines and medications there have been some significant strides against the virus in Liberia, the country hardest hit by the epidemic. The cautious optimism has set off discussion about what the “next phase” of the Ebola response may entail: even more aggressive tracing of people possibly exposed to Ebola.   The number of cases in Liberia, a top WHO official said Wednesday, may be dropping by as much as 25 percent a week. “It appears the trend is real in Liberia,” Bruce Aylward, WHO assistant director general in charge of the operational response said in a press briefing. “There may indeed be a slowing of the epidemic there.”   In west Africa there are still more than 13,500 Ebola cases—actually an uptick of about 3,000 in recent days—but a …

  • Could breathing differently change how people climb mountains?

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – A brief new report claims that using a breathing technique based on Tibetan Buddhist tradition, 26 inexperienced mountain climbers made it up Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa in 48 hours while avoiding acute mountain sickness. They were trained to take quick deep breaths constantly while climbing, said coauthor Dr. Geert A. Buijze of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the Academic Medical Center Amsterdam in The Netherlands. “Compare it to the deep breathing when performing strenuous exercises,” Buijze told Reuters Health by email. Acute mountain sickness (AMS) can affect anyone who ascends above 8,000 feet too rapidly. Symptoms are usually mild, but severe cases can result in blue skin, chest tightness, confusion, coughing up blood and inability to walk. For the new experiment, which was reported in a letter to the editor in Wilderness Environmental Medicine, the climbers received special training in advance, including mindset coaching, cold exposure, and breathing technique …

The troubled actress showed up at court on Friday to battle her parents and the judge, in yet another attempt to rid herself of her parents’ conservatorship and prove to the world she is sane. • Puppy love… for real

Elsie and Brady (Courtesy of the author) She had him at woof. Our golden doodle puppy, Brady, has a crush on the girl next door. ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT She’s an adorable Wheaton terrier named Elsie who’s just a few months younger than Brady. Ever since they discovered each other across our chain-link fence, their obsession has grown. When one is out, he/she is searching for the other. I took Brady for a walk and left the gate to our yard open. Elsie must have been in her yard and heard him. When we returned from the walk, there she was — sitting eagerly on our driveway — waiting for her guy. Their determination to connect is so intense, they’ve found spots all along the fence to dig holes just deep enough for Elsie (who’s smaller) to escape into our yard. While our neighbors are onboard with the relationship, they’re none too pleased about the endless excavation, and …

  • Parachutist rescued from Missouri radio tower

(Reuters) – A man’s plan to leap from a Missouri radio tower south of St. Louis went awry when his parachute got stuck on a supporting wire, leaving him suspended 155 feet above the ground, a fire official said on Friday. The parachutist, Timothy Church, 27, and a second man, Brandon Travis, 26, were arrested for trespassing on private property, St. Louis County Police spokesman Brian Schellman said. Travis helped Church gain access to the tower, he said. Church was rescued by a firefighter trained in high-suspension rescues who climbed the tower and got a rope and pulley to the man. He was then secured and lowered to the ground just before midnight Thursday, said Brian Hendricks, chief of the Mehlville Fire Protection District. “It appears he climbed the tower, jumped, deployed his parachute and as he was coming to the ground he became entangled in the guy wire,” Hendricks said in an interview. Church …
