  • Bighorn sheep escapes Los Angeles Zoo, dies after car strikes it

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – A bighorn sheep escaped from the Los Angeles Zoo at Griffith Park on Saturday and dashed around the hills in the park for hours before it ended up on a residential street where it was struck by a car and died, a zoo spokeswoman said. The sheep got free from its enclosure and darted through an area where zoo visitors were gathered. It escaped the zoo, probably by jumping a fence, and scampered around the hills of the park, said zoo spokeswoman April Spurlock. The animal was loose for about three hours before it was struck by a car on a residential street near the Greek Theatre, she said. The concert venue is about 2 miles southwest of the zoo, on the other side of Griffith Park. Veterinarians and animal care staff set up a perimeter around the sheep and tranquilized it. The animal died a short time later, Spurlock said, …

  • Obama’s day off: Golf with baseball great Derek Jeter

NORTH LAS VEGAS Nev. (Reuters) – Of all the more than 200 rounds of golf Barack Obama has played as president, his outing on Saturday will probably prove to be a highlight: Teeing it up with New York Yankees great Derek Jeter. Obama’s foursome included Jeter, Brian Greenspun, who is owner of the Las Vegas Sun, and businessman and Democratic donor Stephen Cloobeck. They played at Shadow Creek Golf Club, an exclusive course owned by MGM Resorts International. Jeter retired from the Yankees in September after a Hall of Fame career. His golf game will likely need some improvement. A 2006 Golf Digest ranking of athletes who play golf put Jeter’s handicap at a pedestrian 30. Obama stayed in the Las Vegas area after delivering a speech about his immigration policy at a high school on Friday. He returns to Washington on Sunday. • You’re organizing your closet all wrong

Time to get it together If your closet is bursting at the seams and putting together an outfit is a daily treasure hunt, it’s time to get your wardrobe organized. “If you can’t get dressed in a smooth and easy manner in the morning, that can throw your entire day off,” said professional organizer Stacey Agin Murray. The first step to establishing an efficient closet is taking stock and clearing out unworn inventory. Here’s the reality: Most of us only wear 20% of our closet. Don’t dump your entire closet on your bed. “Do it section by section to avoid getting overwhelmed,” Murray advised. Create three piles: keep, donate and try on. Once you have everything sorted, go through the try on pile to see what stays. The home improvement business is booming Once you’ve whittled down your wardrobe to items you actually wear, it’s time to get them organized. Here’s your cheat sheet: Organize …

  • Mariota leads Oregon to rout of Buffs

Eugene, OR (SportsNetwork.com) – Marcus Mariota had another huge game for Oregon, throwing three touchdown passes and adding another on the ground, to lead the third-ranked Ducks to a 44-10 rout of Colorado on Saturday. Mariota continued his Heisman campaign with 323 passing yards and 73 rushing yards for the Ducks (10-1, 7-1 Pac-12), who have won six straight since their lone loss of the season against Arizona on Oct. 2. Royce Freeman led the Oregon ground attack with 105 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The Buffaloes (2-9, 0-8) used two quarterbacks but could not find success through the air. Jordan Gehrke and Sefo Liufau combined to complete just 16- of-32 passes for 105 yards. Christian Powell led Colorado in rushing with 51 yards on five carries. Oregon outgained Colorado 597-226. 23 November 2014 Last updated at 00:48 Please turn on JavaScript. Media requires JavaScript to play. Michelle Fleury reports on the flooding fears Snowfall in the north-east of the US has subsided, forecasters say, but there are now warnings of flooding as the snow melts. Officials in New York state are worried some buildings may collapse when the rain arrives. The storms are blamed for at least 13 deaths in the area. The state remains paralysed by “historic” levels of snowfall. The city of Buffalo was estimated to have received as much snow in three days as it normally gets in a year. In parts of the city the snow was estimated to be as much as 2.4m (8ft) deep. Some areas received a further 0.9m (3ft) earlier this week. The deaths of at least 13 people have been linked to the storms, mostly from exposure and heart attacks. Some of those who died were …

  • Need a laugh? ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ outtakes make it so

Geordi and Data share a laugh in this newly released “Star Trek: The Next Generation” blooper reel. Video screenshot by Bonnie Burton/CNET In “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” the crew of the USS Enterprise encountered both hostile and friendly aliens, dangerous warp core meltdowns, Klingon run-ins, holodeck subplots and constant struggles with the Prime Directive. However, sometimes the cast suffered from laughing fits, klutziness and slaphappy moments that can only be captured on a blooper reel. Fans waiting patiently for the December 2 Blu-ray release of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” were recently treated by Uproxx to a short blooper reel of the cast engaged in hilarious high jinks on the Enterprise and on away missions. The reel starts out with a laugh attack from LeVar Burton, who plays Chief Engineer Geordi La Forge, and Brent Spiner, as Lieutenant Commander Data. Then Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Gates McFadden as Doctor Beverly Crusher …

  • Mediterranean meteorological tide has increased by over a millimetre a year since 1989

Related images(click to enlarge) A new database developed by the University of Cantabria (Spain) provides data on sea level variation due to atmospheric changes in the south of Europe between 1948 and 2009. Over the last two decades sea levels have increased in the Mediterranean basin. “The meteorological sea level or meteorological tide component is the variation of the sea level as a result of atmospheric changes or more specifically, changes in the atmospheric pressure and the wind at the sea surface,” Alba Cid explains, Alba being the lead author of the study published in the journal ‘Climate Dynamics’ which analyses 62 years’ worth of data for this sea level component. Cid and her team at the Environmental Hydraulics Institute at the University of Cantabria (Spain) have generated two (long-term and high resolution) time series for meteorological tides in the Atlantic and Mediterranean basins in the south of Europe and the Canary Islands. In total, …

  • Mali records new Ebola case, linked to dead nurse

BAMAKO (Reuters) – Mali has recorded a new case of Ebola in the capital Bamako after the friend of a nurse who died of the hemorrhagic fever earlier this month tested positive for the disease, health and medical officials said on Saturday. The nurse contracted the disease after treating an imam from neighboring Guinea, who died after being incorrectly diagnosed with kidney problems. This allowed Ebola to spread to five other people in the West African nation’s second outbreak. “Of two suspected cases tested, one was negative and the other positive. The latter was placed in an isolation center for intensive treatment,” a statement from the health ministry said, adding that another 310 contact cases were being monitored. Two Malian medical officials, who asked not to be named, confirmed the relationship between the new case and the deceased nurse. A total of 5,459 people have died in the worst Ebola outbreak on record, according the …

  • Kaley Cuoco Rocks A Miley Cyrus-Inspired Hairstyle For Lunch With Her Hunky Hubby

Posted on Sat Nov 22nd, 2014 11:18am PDT       By X17 Staff Kaley Cuoco and hubby Ryan Sweeting went to lunch at Villa Blanca in Beverly Hills on Friday afternoon, and the two shared a sweet smooch after their meal. But we have to say, after getting a peek at the baby buns on top of Kaley’s head, we’re totally getting Miley Cyrus vibes! Kaley revealed earlier this fall that she cut her hair for an indie film she shot in New Mexico over the summer, and while she offered to get extensions for her role on The Big Bang Theory (you know, that show that nets her a whopping $1 MILLION an episode), producers were “on her side” and wrote it in. Looks like it’s going to be petite ponytails until that ‘do grows out! We still love her though…   SEE THE GALLERY Kaley Cuoco Has Lunch With Hubby Ryan Sweeting Stories from around the …

  • I’m thankful our country is still a refuge and the land of opportunity

When I was 7 years old, my family and I landed at JFK Airport in New York City with $90 in our pocket, a few suitcases stuffed with what little we could carry and no idea of what to expect next.  We came here because we were fleeing a totalitarian regime, because generations of our family had been oppressed simply for existing and because the United States was a beacon for our hopes and aspirations, as it has been for millions of others around the globe. ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT The people literally dying to come here now do not believe that our best days are behind us. My paternal grandfather was sent to Soviet gulag in the prime of his life because he was a religious Jew who refused to work on Saturdays and, possibly, because some of his siblings had fled to France several years after the Russian revolution.  He spent years working as a …

  • Lost kitten from New Mexico turns up in duffel bag in Maine

ALBUQUERQUE N.M. (Reuters) – An Albuquerque cat owner can sleep easier now that the kitten that went missing last month will be home for the holidays, despite a mysterious 2,300-mile side trip to Maine. Patsy Murphy, who runs an animal refuge center in Westbrook, Maine, said the kitten, named Spice, was brought to her shelter on Nov. 11 by a man who found the feline in a duffel bag while unloading furniture at a local Catholic charity. “This is a very odd story, we wish she could tell us what happened,” Murphy said of the kitten, which was found inside the bag with food and kitty litter. Murphy said Maine resident Bob Watterson brought the kitten home on Nov. 5, and cared for it for six days before he turned it over to the animal refuge, which found a microchip in the cat that could identify it. Murphy was shocked when the cat was traced …
