  • Texas Governor to declare ‘Chris Kyle Day’ in honor of sniper

(Reuters) – Texas Governor Greg Abbott said on Friday he would officially declare Feb. 2 “Chris Kyle Day” in the state, in honor of the late Navy Seal sharpshooter portrayed in the film “American Sniper.” The movie, starring Bradley Cooper as Kyle who was killed by a disgruntled U.S. veteran on a Texas gun range in 2013, has been a box office hit as well as a flashpoint of debate between liberals and conservatives. Abbott, a Republican, made the announcement during a speech at the Texans Veterans of Foreign Affairs Mid-Winter Convention in Austin, according to a statement from the governor’s office. “In honor of a Texas son, a Navy SEAL and an American hero – a man who defended his brothers and sisters in arms on and off the battlefield – I am declaring February 2nd Chris Kyle Day in Texas,” Abbott said during the speech, according to the statement. The film has been …

  • Republican Romney opts out of a 2016 run for president

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Republican Mitt Romney bowed out of the 2016 U.S. presidential race on Friday after considering a third run, telling supporters it was time for the next generation of party leaders to seek the White House. Romney’s decision helps clarify an emerging Republican field split between potential establishment candidates like former Florida Governor Jeb Bush and conservative voices represented by Texas Senator Ted Cruz and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee. The move will likely boost Bush, the brother of former President George W. Bush, even though Romney has privately made known to aides he is not convinced that Bush can defeat Hillary Clinton if she becomes the Democratic presidential nominee. But Romney’s decision also helps other potential candidates such as Florida Senator Marco Rubio, who was on Romney’s vice presidential short list in 2012; Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and possibly New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, all of whom will have a better chance …

  • Oops! News sites backtrack on reports Romney is running

Romney’s announcement to forgo a White House bid forced two websites to backtrack. Within hours on Friday, two popular news websites went from claiming a big 2016 scoop to reversing course. There was plenty of speculation that Mitt Romney would announce his plans to embark on another White House run, and the Daily Beast and Bloomberg News appeared to ratify those assumptions. The two websites each published reports — neither of which had a byline — citing sources who said the former Massachusetts governor was ready to explore a third presidential campaign. Shortly before Romney’s scheduled 11 a.m. call with donors, conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt — a vocal Romney booster — posted a statement that said otherwise. “After putting considerable thought into making another run for president, I’ve decided it is best to give other leaders in the Party the opportunity to become our next nominee,” Romney said in the statement, which Hewitt posted …

  • Kane, Sharp lead Blackhawks past Ducks

Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) – Patrick Kane scored two goals and set up another in helping the visiting Chicago Blackhawks beat the Anaheim Ducks 4-1 on Friday night. Patrick Sharp had four assists, and Jonathan Toews and Duncan Keith also scored for the Blackhawks. Rickard Rakell’s power-play goal midway through the third period spoiled the shutout bid for Corey Crawford, who made 21 saves as Chicago notched its third straight victory at Honda Center. Frederik Andersen stopped 29 shots for the Ducks, who have dropped two in a row following a six-game winning streak. The Blackhawks, who were up 3-0 entering the third, blew three one-goal leads in Wednesday’s 4-3 loss at Los Angeles, and perhaps thoughts of that game entered their minds when Rakell scored off a feed from Corey Perry with 9:54 remaining. But Kane put Chicago back up by three with 6:35 left. Somehow Kane was left alone in front of Andersen and …

  • Made-in-Singapore rapid test kit detects dengue antibodies from saliva

Related images(click to enlarge) Finding out whether you have been infected with dengue may soon be as easy as spitting into a rapid test kit. The Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN) of A*STAR has developed a paper-based disposable device that will allow dengue-specific antibodies to be detected easily from saliva within 20 minutes. This device is currently undergoing further development for commercialization. IBN Executive Director Professor Jackie Y. Ying shared, “Our rapid diagnostic kit can detect a key dengue antibody from saliva that is present in early-stage secondary infection. The ability to differentiate between primary and secondary dengue infections makes it a valuable early diagnosis tool that would help to ensure timely treatment and proper care of patients.” Patients with secondary infection, who have previously been infected with other serotypes of dengue virus, stand a higher risk of developing dengue hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome. According to Singapore’s National Environment Agency, dengue fever …

  • More than 100 cases of measles now confirmed in U.S

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – More than 100 people in the United States have been confirmed as infected with measles including 91 in California, most of them linked to an outbreak that began at Disneyland in December, public health officials said on Friday. The California Department of Public Health said at least 58 of the cases of the highly infectious disease in the state have been epidemiologically linked to the Disneyland cluster. More than a dozen other cases have been confirmed in 13 other U.S. states and in Mexico. No deaths have been reported in connection with the outbreak, which public health officials suspect began when an infected person from outside the United States visited Disneyland in Anaheim between Dec. 15 and Dec. 20. The White House on Friday urged parents to heed the advice of public health officials and scientists in getting their children vaccinated. “People should evaluate this for themselves with a bias toward …

  • Secretary of State Kerry fined for not shoveling by Boston home

BOSTON (Reuters) – U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry was slapped with a $50 fine for failing to have a side street adjoining his Boston home shoveled following the blizzard that dropped more than 2 feet (60 cm) of snow on Massachusetts this week, a spokesman said on Friday. The fine was issued on Thursday after a snow-removal company hired by Kerry and his neighbors in the city’s historic Beacon Hill neighborhood saw yellow tape blocking the sidewalk alongside the home and thought it was related to security for the top U.S. diplomat. The tape had been put up to warn pedestrians of falling ice and snow, said Kerry’s spokesman, Glen Johnson. “Once they understood that they were allowed to enter the area, the contractors finished the sidewalk late Thursday morning,” he said. Kerry was in Saudi Arabia with President Barack Obama to attend the funeral of King Abdullah and meet with his successor, King …
