  • Murder charges for man in gruesome Florida quadruple killing

TAMPA Fla. (Reuters) – Florida police charged a man with murder on Monday in a quadruple killing, after finding the victims’ bodies earlier this month decomposing by the side of the road. Adam Matos, 28, faces four counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his ex-girlfriend, her parents, and her new boyfriend, according to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office. Matos has been jailed since Sept. 5 on charges of aggravated assault, following his arrest when police swarmed a hotel in downtown Tampa police to rescue a 4-year-old boy with him. The child, his son, has been safely returned to relatives. On Monday, sheriff’s officials detailed a gruesome crime scene in an affidavit detailing the charges against Matos, who had recently moved to Florida with the family from Pennsylvania. Police went to check on a family living in a two-story house in Hudson, Florida, about 45 miles north of Tampa, after relatives had been unable …

  • Rio police ‘corruption’ arrests

16 September 2014 Last updated at 00:06 Rio’s police received special training for the World Cup in dealing with protests. Police in Rio de Janeiro have arrested twenty-two of their own officers for alleged involvement in a bribery and extortion racket. Among those arrested was the third-in-command of the city’s military police, Colonel Alexandre Fontenelle Ribeiro. Col Ribeiro is the chief of special operations and leads the city’s shock troops. Search warrants have been issued for a number of other officers and a large amount of cash has been seized. City public prosecutors said in a statement that senior police officers at the 14th Battalion in Bangu, in the west of Rio, had demanded payments from shopkeepers, motorbike taxis, private van and bus companies. The payments were between $12 (£7) and $1,000 and were collected either on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. The payments protected their victims from being charged for legal infractions. • How an ancient vertebrate uses familiar tools to build a strange-looking head

Related images(click to enlarge) If you never understood what “ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny” meant in high school, don’t worry: biologists no longer think that an animal’s “ontogeny,” that is, its embryonic development, replays its entire evolutionary history. Instead, the new way to figure out how animals evolved is to compare regulatory networks that control gene expression patterns, particularly embryonic ones, across species. An elegant study published in the September 14, 2014 advance online issue of Nature from the Stowers Institute for Medical Research shows just how humbling and exhilarating that pursuit can be. In the study, Investigator and Scientific Director Robb Krumlauf, Ph.D. and colleagues show that the sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus, a survivor of ancient jawless vertebrates, exhibits a pattern of gene expression that is reminiscent of its jawed cousins, who evolved much, much later. Those genes, called Hox genes, function like a molecular ruler, determining where along the anterior-posterior (AP) axis an animal will …

  • End ‘panic’ measures undermining fight against Ebola: Ghana

MONROVIA (Reuters) – Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama on Monday called for the easing of restrictions on West African nations fighting Ebola, saying “panic” measures had led to isolation and undermined the battle against the disease. Airlines have halted many flights into and around West Africa, where governments have closed some borders and imposed travel restrictions in a bid to fight an Ebola outbreak that has killed over 2,400 people. Experts have warned such moves are counter-productive as economies are crippled by the lack of trade and it becomes harder to move aid workers and supplies to fight the virus around the region. “Now that we have a clearer understanding of the disease and how it spreads and all of the ramifications, we should not in panic take measures that will isolate the countries that are affected by this outbreak,” Mahama said while in Liberia, on the first leg of a tour of Ebola-affected countries. …

Liberals are worried…. (and they should be). You can smell it in the air, the conservative wave is around the corner.  The liberal media and the Democratic National Committee are up in arms against several of the GOP’s top candidates.  ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT Monday, a Washington Post hatchet piece attacked the leading Liberty Conservative in politics: Kentucky Senator Rand Paul.   Whenever one of our conservative friends is attacked this hard in the mainstream media, first consider the source.   To my conservative friends, who believe every bad story written, even about their own allies, please think twice and proceed with caution.  Most of us know that the appearance of conservative hit pieces escalates as the left perceives the threat level. It appears, the threat level is flashing big and red. Conservatives like Rand Paul are serious. They are getting the message across, that conservative and libertarian ideas are a threat to the Big Government left.  For …
