Sally Bercow learns the social media rules the hard way in McAlpine case | Joshua Rozen...
The Speaker’s wife has learned the hard way that while her husband and his fellow MPs make the law, it is the judges who interpret and apply it.
The outcome of Lord McAlpine‘s libel case against Sally Bercow is likely to have provided her with an expensive lesson on the British constitution.
While it’s possible that she was represented on a no win, no fee basis by her solicitors Carter-Ruck and the two barristers who appeared for her at the high court earlier in the month, she will certainly have to pay Lord McAlpineR [...]

US presidents often address graduating military classes
President Barack Obama has told US Navy graduates they must help end a culture of sexual assault in the military.
He told 841 men and 206 women at the Naval Academy commissioning ceremony in Annapolis, Maryland, the effects of misconduct “ripple far and wide”.
A Pentagon report released in May said 26,000 military personnel may have been sexually assaulted in 2012, with scores of them unwilling to come forward.

Parents Underestimate Influence Over Teens’ Substance Abuse: Survey
FRIDAY, May 24 (HealthDay News) — About one in five parents think they have little control over whether their teens take up smoking, drinking or illicit drug use, a new U.S. government survey finds.
That’s too bad, say experts at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), since new research shows that parents are actually one of the most influential forces helping to shape their child’s views on these issues.
“Surveys of teens repeatedly show that parents can make an e [...]

Bridge Collapse in Washington State Sends Two Cars Plunging Into The Skagit River
It’s been a rough week for bridges around the U.S. At about 7 p.m. local time in Washington state yesterday a bridge spanning the Skagit river north of Seattle (part of Interstate 5) collapsed after a truck carrying a tall load collided with one of the spans, sending two cars plunging into the river below. The three people in those cars all survived with non-life-threatening injuries, but it should probably come as a surprise to no one that the bridge–which services about 71,000 crossings of the Skagit river every day–is r [...]
Kim Dotcom: Two-Step Authentication Patent Is Mine
Kim Dotcom, founder of the seized file-sharing site Megaupload, hinted via Twitter that he might sue the slew of companies using two-step authentication, for which Dotcom claims to own the patent.
Dotcom provided a
link to a patent that deals with two layers of identification, corroborating his purported ownership. That said, it is hard to know if the patent, which was filed for in 1998 and granted in 2000, would cover the two-step authentication that has become all the rage on the Web.

Did Holder mislead Congress about targeting reporters like James Rosen?
In his speech at the National Defense University Thursday, President Obama said, “Journalists should not be at legal risk for doing their jobs. Our focus must be on those who break the law.”
Maybe it’s time for the president to have a heart-to-heart with his attorney general, Eric Holder.
NBC News is reporting that Mr. Holder “signed off on a controversial search warrant that identified Fox News reporter James Rosen as a ‘possible co-conspirator’ in violations of the Espionage Act and authorized seizure of his private emails,” per NBC co [...]
Hedge fund guru says moms and trading don’t mix
Leaning in may work for women in the world of tech. But if you’re a woman who wants to balance trading and a family, one hedge fund manager says that’s not possible.
“You will never see as many great women investors or traders as men. Period. End of story,” said billionaire Paul Tudor Jones at the University of Virginia’s spring investing symposium last month.
The video of the event, which was off the record, was obtained by The Washington Post through a Freedom of Information Act request. The newspaper re [...]
Carl Froch against Mikkel Kessler sparks memories of Benn v McClellan | Kevin Mitchell
Carl Froch and Mikkel Kessler are alike in many ways, each blessed with iron fists, jaws and wills, and they are vocal in their mutual admiration, but a fundamental difference between them has become manifest in the buildup to their world title rematch in London on Saturday night.
For a man who earns his living in the ring, the Dane, who has a WBC version of the 12-stone title, seems to be in the grip of a permanent and disarming smile, as if he knows something the rest of us do not. Kessler, the most courteous of men, is either very happ [...]

The researchers said improved coordination between ER and ICU sta [...]
