  • Hagel resigns as defense secretary, official says

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has resigned, U.S. officials said on Monday, ending nearly two years in the Pentagon’s top job after a bruising mid-term election that undermined President Barack Obama’s Democrats in Congress. Hagel, who had struggled to improve his ties with Congress after a contentious 2013 confirmation hearing, submitted his resignation letter after lengthy discussions with Obama that began in October, officials said. Obama accepted his resignation and would formally announce the decision at 11:10 a.m. EST (1610 GMT), officials said. “A successor will be named in short order, but Secretary Hagel will remain as Defense Secretary until his replacement is confirmed by the United States Senate,” a senior Obama administration official said. Top potential candidates to replace Hagel include Michele Flournoy, a former under secretary of defense, and Ashton Carter, a former deputy secretary of defense, who were rumored to be contenders for Hagel’s job before he was named. Senator …

  • Roger Wicker Looks for Fast Start at NRSC

By Kyle Trygstad Posted at 5 a.m. today 0 Tweet Wicker sat down in his office on Nov. 19 for an exclusive interview. (Bill Clark/CQ Roll Call) Twenty-one Republican senators up for re-election in 2016 filed into the National Republican Senatorial Committee on the morning of Nov. 19 to meet with party strategists about campaign preparations. Leading the confab with the incumbents and their chiefs of staff were incoming NRSC Chairman Roger Wicker, the Mississippi senator elected to the position a week earlier, and Ward Baker, the 2014 political director who was promoted to executive director for the new cycle. Unlike the past four NRSC administrations, this one is charged with defending a Senate majority. Later that day, in his first newspaper interview since being elected chairman, Wicker spoke candidly about the challenges ahead. He declined to detail the meeting but said, “I guarantee you the issue of fundraising arose.” While Republicans are primed to …

  • ‘Hunger Games’ disappoints despite record opening weekend

The best movie opening weekend of the year was still a disappointment, as the “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1″ fell far short of expectations. The estimated $123 million in box office easily topped the $100 million opening for the “Transformers: Age of Extinction,” which was the previous best opening of 2014. But it was far below the openings of the previous two “Hunger Games” movies, which each brought in more than $150 million with their openings. “A 22% drop … is stunning for a series that’s been as well-managed and well-received as this one,” wrote Ray Subers, industry analyst at IMDB.com. Shares of Lionsgate (LGF), the studio behind the “Hunger Games” movies, fell nearly 4% in premarket trading Monday. The studio, Hollywood forecasters and theater owners had been counting on much better opening, perhaps matching or topping the openings of the previous movies. At the very least it was expected that the latest …

  • US defence secretary ‘to step down’

24 November 2014 Last updated at 15:04 Chuck Hagel will resign as US defence secretary after less than two years in the top US military post, US media report. Mr Hagel, 68, a Vietnam war veteran and former senator, became defence secretary in 2013. He is reportedly stepping down amid a shift in US military strategy to fight Islamic State (IS), the New York Times first reported. He is expected to stay on as secretary until his successor is confirmed. Mr Obama is expected to announce his resignation later on Monday morning. An unnamed official told the Associated Press news agency that Mr Hagel and Mr Obama both “determined that it was time for new leadership in the Pentagon” and had been discussing the move for weeks. • Lab Talk: Graphene goes ballistic, Marine reserves to the rescue

Peter Sherrell Graphene goes ballistic Imagine if you could generate clean hydro-electricity in the Snowy Mountains and pass that electricity, without any loss, to Perth. It is impossible with today’s copper cables – electrical resistance makes long-distance transmission inefficient. Graphene looks much more promising. This paper shows that graphene sheets can achieve “ballistic” conduction at room temperature. The electrons fly across the sheets with no scattering resistance. Ballistic conduction is a step below superconductivity for effort-free electron flow – but superconductors require temperatures at least as low as -135°C to operate. As the graphene sheets are only 40 nanometres long, they are as yet too small to be much use in an electricity grid. But researchers have focused on a much nearer-term, nanoscale application – more efficient transistors for consumer electronics.  Paper: Exceptional ballistic transport in epitaxial graphene nanoribbons.Nature 2014, vol 506, p349–354   Adriana Verges Marine reserves a buffer to climate change Marine reserves are spectacular …

  • Some Newly Insured Under ‘Obamacare’ May Have Trouble Finding Doctors

MONDAY, Nov. 24, 2014 (HealthDay News) — Millions of Americans bought health insurance coverage through the Affordable Care Act in the past year. Now, several shortcomings in the system have been discovered. In some markets, doctors are reluctant to take on patients who bought health insurance plans through the state and federal exchanges that were created by “Obamacare.” “I think doctors have a couple of problems with the exchange policies,” said Dr. Austin King, an otolaryngologist and president of the Texas Medical Association. People often don’t understand their insurance coverage, so staff members have to educate them, “and that adds to the hassle of seeing these patients,” King said. Another problem: Doctors are wary of the law’s provision giving people with subsidized coverage a 90-day grace period before their coverage is cancelled for failing to pay the premium. Doctors fear they could end up on the hook for care provided to people who lose their …

  • I’m thankful our country is still a refuge and the land of opportunity

When I was 7 years old, my family and I landed at JFK Airport in New York City with $90 in our pocket, a few suitcases stuffed with what little we could carry and no idea of what to expect next.  We came here because we were fleeing a totalitarian regime, because generations of our family had been oppressed simply for existing and because the United States was a beacon for our hopes and aspirations, as it has been for millions of others around the globe. ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT The people literally dying to come here now do not believe that our best days are behind us. My paternal grandfather was sent to Soviet gulag in the prime of his life because he was a religious Jew who refused to work on Saturdays and, possibly, because some of his siblings had fled to France several years after the Russian revolution.  He spent years working as a …

  • Lost kitten from New Mexico turns up in duffel bag in Maine

ALBUQUERQUE N.M. (Reuters) – An Albuquerque cat owner can sleep easier now that the kitten that went missing last month will be home for the holidays, despite a mysterious 2,300-mile side trip to Maine. Patsy Murphy, who runs an animal refuge center in Westbrook, Maine, said the kitten, named Spice, was brought to her shelter on Nov. 11 by a man who found the feline in a duffel bag while unloading furniture at a local Catholic charity. “This is a very odd story, we wish she could tell us what happened,” Murphy said of the kitten, which was found inside the bag with food and kitty litter. Murphy said Maine resident Bob Watterson brought the kitten home on Nov. 5, and cared for it for six days before he turned it over to the animal refuge, which found a microchip in the cat that could identify it. Murphy was shocked when the cat was traced …
