  • Major snowstorm hits Chicago, heads toward New England

KANSAS CITY (Reuters) – A major winter storm swept through parts of the Midwest on Sunday, dumping more than a foot (30 cm) of snow in Chicago area before tracking toward New England, a region still reeling from a powerful blizzard that struck only days ago. The fresh snowfall and strong winds complicated the plans of millions of Americans in the Midwest planning to travel to Super Bowl parties on Sunday evening. In Chicago’s two major airports, about 1,400 flights were canceled. “Now we are worried about the winds, with blizzard warnings and near white-out conditions,” said Amy Seeley, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Chicago. “It’s reducing visibilities and will cause problems for people traveling tonight.” The storm path extends from eastern Nebraska and South Dakota to the Great Lakes states and into the northern reaches of New England, according to the National Weather Service, which forecast up to 18 inches (45 …

  • Obama targets foreign profits with tax proposal, Republicans skeptical

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama’s fiscal 2016 budget will seek new taxes on trillions of dollars in profits accumulated overseas by U.S. companies, and a new approach to taxing foreign profits in the future, but Republicans were skeptical of the plan on Sunday. Reviving a long-running debate about corporate tax avoidance, Obama will target a loophole that lets companies pay no tax on earnings held abroad, the White House said. But his proposal was certain to encounter stiff resistance from Republicans. In his budget plan to be unveiled on Monday, Obama will call for a one-time, 14 percent tax on an estimated $2.1 trillion in profits piled up abroad over the years by multinationals such as General Electric (GE.N), Microsoft (MSFT.O), Pfizer Inc (PFE.N) and Apple Inc (AAPL.O). He will also seek to impose a 19 percent tax on U.S. companies’ future foreign earnings, the White House said. At present, those earnings are supposed …

  • More than 3,300 crash claims filed against GM as window closes

More than 3,350 claims have been filed against General Motors, alleging the automaker’s vehicles with faulty ignition switches caused deaths and injuries. The claims were filed to Kenneth Feinberg, the victim compensation specialist hired by GM (GM) to evaluate the claims and authorize payouts. His office has so far ruled at least 125 claims eligible, including 50 deaths. Nearly 400 were ruled ineligible for compensation through the fund and thousands more are either under review or were submitted without adequate documentation. The deadline to file claims was Saturday, and fund deputy administrator Camille Biros told CNNMoney the 3,350 total represents claims filed through Thursday. The number was first reported by The New York Times. Biros said new figures would be released on Monday. Feinberg’s office will also review claims that are currently in the mail but were postmarked Saturday, and continue to accept and consider evidence for claims it has already received. He said …

  • Lyon held to draw against Monaco

Fontvieille, Monaco (SportsNetwork.com) – Lyon wasted an opportunity to put some distance between themselves and those below them in the table on Sunday after the club was held to a scoreless draw against Monaco at the Stade Louis II. With second and third place Marseille and Paris Saint-Germain, respectively, both notching three points this weekend, Lyon had the opportunity to extend their lead over Marseille to four points with a victory, but the club was held in check by a stout Monaco defense. Lyon entered the day looking for a second straight win following a 2-0 result over Metz last time out, but the finishing was off for the duration of the 90 minutes. Lyon had the better of possession, keeping 57 percent of the ball and firing three attempts on target, but they could only take one point away from the match to move to 49 points from 23 matches, two clear of Marseille. …

Samir Salem Kamal had been seized after leaving work in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, on 15 January. His family said he was in good health considering the situation, but shaken up by his ordeal. In this week’s issue of the journal Science, MIT researchers report that just four fairly vague pieces of information — the dates and locations of four purchases — are enough to identify 90 percent of the people in a data set recording three months of credit-card transactions by 1.1 million users. When the researchers also considered coarse-grained information about the prices of purchases, just three data points were enough to identify an even larger percentage of people in the data set. That means that someone with copies of just three of your recent receipts — or one receipt, one Instagram photo of you having coffee with friends, and one tweet about the phone you just bought — would have a 94 percent chance of extracting your credit card records from those of a million other people. This is true, the researchers say, even in cases where no one in the data set is identified by …

  • China eyes food safety, modern farms in 2015 rural policy

BEIJING (Reuters) – China has listed food safety and modernizing farms as among key priorities this year, its 2015 rural policy outline showed, as it tackles falling agricultural productivity that has raised concerns about its future food supply. The “number one document”, issued every January and released by state news agency Xinhua on Sunday, showed China will also protect farmland and lend more to farmers to narrow a wealth gap between rural and urban areas. Attempts to clean up land that has been damaged by heavy metal mining and processing will be widened this year, and “permanent farmland” that is off-limit to industrial and urban development will be created, the document said. Modern farms will be set up, and regulation of the quality of food and other farm products will be enhanced, it said. On land reforms, aimed at allowing farmers to trade their land to alleviate poverty and create bigger and more efficient farms, …

  • Kim, Kanye And Nori Touch Down In Arizona For The Super Bowl

Posted on Sun Feb 1st, 2015 12:25pm PDT       By X17 Staff Kim Kardashian and Kanye West brought daughter Nori along to Arizona for the Super Bowl and the family touched down in a private jet early on Saturday. Kanye didn’t skip a beat because he went straight to warm-up for pre-party performance with Rihanna and then took to the stage just hours later. Kim, apparently, stayed in bed at the hotel, taking mommy-and-me selfies with Nori. The Selfish “author” (can you really say she’s an author if she publishes a coffee table book of recycled selfies?) posted this adorable shot of her little girl yesterday. But it wasn’t all mommy time for Kim, she eventually made her way to meet up with hubby Kanye and pals John Legend and Chrissy Tiegen after Kanye and Rihanna’s DirecTV gig at where else … Waffle House! The famished four went where any respectable person would go if they find …

  • Obama, Netanyahu and Iran: Why Israel’s leader won’t back down on Congress speech

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been invited by House Speaker John Boehner to address a joint session of Congress. It will be an occasion for Netanyahu to deliver his views on the nuclear deal with Iran that the White House and its European partners are attempting to craft. It is a deal Netanyahu does not like or trust. President Obama wants the speech canceled. He has made it clear that he won’t meet with Netanyahu. His senior officials are telling journalists, off the record, that a speech by Bibi could wreck Israeli-American relations, leave the Jewish state friendless and veto-less at the U.N. and unprotected from the aggression of the ayatollahs in Tehran. ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT Unlike the American president, Bibi can’t afford to simply hope for the best. For almost two decades he has been obsessed with what could happen to his country if the ayatollahs get their hands on the strategic weapons to carry out their deranged …

  • Secretary of State Kerry fined for not shoveling by Boston home

BOSTON (Reuters) – U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry was slapped with a $50 fine for failing to have a side street adjoining his Boston home shoveled following the blizzard that dropped more than 2 feet (60 cm) of snow on Massachusetts this week, a spokesman said on Friday. The fine was issued on Thursday after a snow-removal company hired by Kerry and his neighbors in the city’s historic Beacon Hill neighborhood saw yellow tape blocking the sidewalk alongside the home and thought it was related to security for the top U.S. diplomat. The tape had been put up to warn pedestrians of falling ice and snow, said Kerry’s spokesman, Glen Johnson. “Once they understood that they were allowed to enter the area, the contractors finished the sidewalk late Thursday morning,” he said. Kerry was in Saudi Arabia with President Barack Obama to attend the funeral of King Abdullah and meet with his successor, King …
