Big Red looks to be feeling the heat to get its take on Samsung’s new Galaxy S4 into the hands of customers.
Verizon customers have begun to report receiving notifications from the carrier that their new
Android superphones have shipped earlier than expected.
While I’ve yet to see video footage, I can only assume that many happy dances have followed receipt of these emails.

Rays use 6-run ninth to down O’s
Baltimore, MD – Matt Joyce’s two-run double was the go-ahead hit in a six-run ninth inning, as Tampa Bay rallied past Baltimore, 10-6, in the middle test of a three-game set from Camden Yards.
Jim Johnson (1-4) entered with a two-run lead, but Kelly Johnson’s one-out
homer made it 6-5. Jose Lobaton and Yunel Escobar both walked and a Desmond
Jennings single loaded the bases. Joyce stepped in and roped a double to the
gap in right center for a 7-6 contest, and Darren O’Day came on, only to be

EA drops online pass for used games
16 May 2013
Last updated at 06:08 ET
Online Pass made it harder for people to sell on games such as Dead Space
Electronic Arts is discontinuing a controversial program that stifled trade in second-hand games.
The Online Pass program locked many titles so second-hand games could only be fully played if a person bought a code from EA to unlock online add-ons.
Some of EA’s most popular games, including Battlefield 3, Dead Space and Madden NFL, used Online Pass.
The company said it had decided to end the program partly [...]
Garry Winogrand, edited by Leo Rubinfien et al – review
To say that Garry Winogrand was productive is to dramatically understate the case. When he died in 1984, he left behind a huge archive: over 35,000 prints, 22,000 contact sheets and 45,000 colour transparencies. Perhaps more astounding still were the 6,500 rolls of unprocessed films, a testimony to a vocation that bordered on an obsession.

The Tories want out of Europe. Let’s try to get out of this depression instead
According to Greek mythology, Cerberus was the many-headed hound that stood at the gates of Hades, the underworld. Feeding the hound of hell was a thankless task. He always wanted more. Hence the expression “a sop to Cerberus”, meaning a futile gift of a morsel that only leaves the hound baying for more.
I am not suggesting for one moment that Ukip or the Tory party are dogs. But the expression “a sop to Cerberus” – much favoured by my classics master in days gone by – does keep coming to mind, with our beleaguered [...]
McInerney scores again as Union douse Fire
Chester, PA – Jack McInerney scored his league-leading eighth goal of the season on Saturday to lift the Philadelphia Union to a 1-0 win over the Chicago Fire on a rainy night at PPL Park.
The result gives Philadelphia its second win in its last three matches and
second win over Chicago in a span of eight days.
“(That was) a big win for our club tonight,” Union head coach John Hackworth
said. “It’s extremely difficult to beat a team in our conference twice in
eight days.”

If ‘everyone knew’ the oil market was open to rigging, why did no one act?
If anyone was looking for an argument in favour of the UK continuing to hang close to our continental cousins, last week’s dramatic dawn raids by the European Commission on the biggest names in oil might be one.
While the Office of Fair Trading gave the petrol companies a clean bill of health after a cursory examination barely four months ago, the competition authorities in Brussels have just knocked down the corporate doors in their first move on alleged market manipulation.
The Serious Fraud Office in London is now trying to get i [...]

Terahertz Image Reveals Goya’s Hidden Signature in Old Master Painting
In 1771, the young Spanish painter Francisco Goya travelled to Rome to learn and be inspired by the many great artists there. In that year, he is thought to have painted “The Sacrifice to Vesta” depicting a sacrifice to the goddess of fire. The work is important because it shows how Goya was developing artistically at a formative stage in his career.
There is little dispute that Goya is the author of this work– the artist’s skill and style are clear and various experts have confirmed the attribution. However, the painting lacks a signat [...]
