Most people probably associate Ethernet with a simple cable cinched with phone-like jacks. But, Ethernet is so much more.
It is the foundation for global Internet access and undoubtedly the world’s most-used connectivity technology. In the annals of “techdom,” Ethernet is a very big deal.
“Ethernet ranks highly among those technologies that impact day-to-day life on a global basis,” IEEE [...]

Hezbollah has been burying members who were killed fighting in Qusair
The overt involvement of Hezbollah fighters in the battle for the strategic western Syrian town of Qusair confirms the transition of the militant Lebanese Shia movement into a whole new phase of its existence.
From its inception as an Iranian- and Syrian-backed counter to the Israel invasion of Lebanon in 1982, Hezbollah̵ [...]
England ban all talk of the Ashes
There will be a hint of Fawlty Towers in England’s approach to the second Test against New Zealand this week, with Andy Flower adopting the role of John Cleese to insist that his players do not mention the Ashes. But Nick Compton and Jonny Bairstow, the two batsmen battling for one place in the series that must not be mentioned – assuming Kevin Pietersen is fit – can expect plenty of reminders when they come to the crease at Headingley.
Neither managed a half century in the first Test at Lord’s, with Compton not even making 20 [...]
Fish Oil Pills Might Cut Diabetes Risk, Researchers Say
WEDNESDAY, May 22 (HealthDay News) — Fish oil supplements could help reduce the risk for type 2 diabetes, new research suggests.
The supplements, also known as omega-3 fatty acids, increase levels of a hormone called adiponectin that’s linked to insulin sensitivity, Harvard researchers found. Higher levels of this hormone in the bloodstream have also been linked to a lower risk for heart disease.
“While prior animal studies found fish oil increased circulating adiponectin, whether similar effects apply [...]

Garcetti crossed the finish line of his two-year campaign to lead America’s second-largest city with 54 percent of the vo [...]
Ed Miliband: a googly for tax avoiders | Editorial
In his own mind, Ed Miliband is pretty clear about how he would like to distinguish the Labour party he leads from the Labour party that went before. He aims to be readier than Blair and Brown to challenge the powerful in general, and the economically mighty in particular.
Over three years, we’ve seen flashes of both halves of that – in, for example, his determination to take Wapping to task over phone hacking, and in his conference speech on predatory capitalism, which initially left pundits scratching their heads, but looked smart [...]

CHICAGO (Reuters) – The Chicago Board of Education voted on Wednesday to close 50 schools – including about 10 percent of all elementary schools – in the largest mass school closing in the nation.
The closings in mainly Hispanic and African-American neighborhoods have drawn protests by parents and teachers union leaders who say the closures will expose children to greater gang violence in a city that recorded 506 murders in 2012.

More than 70,000 people have died over the last two years in Syria, according to the UN

In its annual report, the human rights group also blames world leaders for prioritising immigration control over the rights of people.
The study documents torture in at least 112 countries.
It also criticises the UN for what it describes as its [...]
