GRAPEVINE, Texas (Reuters) – The Boy Scouts of America voted on Thursday to lift a ban on openly gay scouts that had been in place throughout the organization’s 103-year history, capping weeks of intense lobbying on both sides, the group said in a statement.
More than 60 percent of the group’s National Council, composed of some 1,400 delegates, voted to end the ban effective January 1, 2014.

(Reuters) – Hall of Fame goalie and four-times Stanley Cup champion Patrick Roy has been named head coach of the Colorado Avalanche, the National Hockey League (NHL) team said on Thursday.
Roy, who won two Stanley Cups with the Montreal Canadiens and two with Colorado before retiring in 2003 after a 19-year career, reached an agreement in principal to become the sixth head coach in Avalanche history.

Errors acknowledged in “rushed” stem cell paper

WASHINGTON: A high-profile study in which U.S. researchers reported they had turned human skin cells into embryonic stem cells contained errors, its lead author has acknowledged.
Shoukhrat Mitalipov nevertheless adamantly stood by the conclusions of the study published last week in journal Cell, which reported that human stem cell lines for the first time had been created via cloning.

The World Health Organisation says it is closely monitoring the virus
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has urged countries with possible cases of novel coronavirus to share information.
The move comes after Saudi Arabia said the development of diagnostic tests had been delayed by patent rights on the NCoV virus by commercial laboratories.
Twenty-two deaths and 44 cases have been reported worldwide since 2012, the WHO says.
